Alfred Pulford In that particular even Hahnemann failed to comprehend, or he would have been careful to have brought it out emphasized it. Yet it was, and is, a point all our very best prescribers vaguely and intuitively sensed and used to the greatest advantage. That is the very thing we are trying to convey and teach in our little Key to the Homoeopathic Materia Medica.
Small wounds that swell up, do not tend to heal, edges look dry, shiny, red, inflame, burn, tear. Injury to coccyx, pain runs up spine. The lockjaw preventive par excellence. Three persons were injured in an accident, one an eye knocked out, the other skull cracked, the third badly bruised. Were told at the hospital that if they did not take antitetanus serum they could not possibly escape lockjaw.
A CASE. The human mind must follow the law of least effort in Nature that we so easily revert to routine behavior, to which classification may be one of the narcotics which helps us to that end. It sort of eases our consciences and, because classification is one of the methods of science, it seems so scientific; but everything has its time and place and the trick of success is putting the right thing in the right place at the right time.
One does not have to be in practice long to come in contact with a child to which one would like to apply Quercus (the species does not matter) in quite material dosage to the north elevation of the child while it is facing south at the level midway between the coronal suture and the os calcis.
Sudden attacks, come in rapid succession. Before attack: Nervous tremor; screams. During attack: Giddy; jaws fixed; bites tongue; trembles; makes facial grimaces; features distorted; foams at mouth; throws limbs about; bends backward; falls; irregular stertorous breathing; very restless; unconscious, partial or complete. After attack: Weak, great lassitude; stupid; lack of sensibility and loss of memory.
The applied drug itself supplies no force, it merely repairs the broken line of communication, thereby allowing the real curative agent, the vital force, to do its work; and that it does by supplying enough energy to allow the part to repel all basic cells foreign to the part.
Just why should all surgeons be compelled to study and practice homoeopathy? Study the following exhibits and answer the question yourselves! Do not get me wrongly, I am not unalterably opposed to surgery. I am only opposed to unnecessary surgery! Surgery should only come into play as a dernier resort; a resort to be avoided whenever and wherever possible.
Ever more glorious will homoeopathy unfold its banner; ever more brightly will it beam in the firmament of science; ever more full of curative virtue she will show her wonderful powers if she is not decked in any false finery or disfigured with any borrowed attire or ornaments. It positively will not mix with modern medicine. Then “If I am right your grace impart still in the right to stay; if I am wrong who of you will teach my heart to find that better way?”.
The material basic cells that enter composition and construction of all natural and material substances and objects never will be envisioned by man even through his crudely constructed instruments of “precision.” E.G., consider the perfectly constructed flea ! So-called contagion is only applicable to those already predisposed to that particular ailment.
In confinement, early in the game I learned that process, and by studying carefully Guernsey, who was the greatest prescriber that was ever known in any school, and Bell on Diarrhoea, to learn how they prescribed, that gave me the insight into this game.
The first section shows all the symptoms shared equally by both remedies. Following this are the symptoms which, though shared by other remedies, are not shared by each other in any grade. Following these is a list of the symptoms found under no other remedy in the Materia Medica, other than the one under which they appear. To repeat, all symptoms below are first degree symptoms.
It would, indeed, be valuable if we could only know accurately the cause and origin of disease. MORPHOLOGY is an important subject, but not so important and vital as to disqualify from practising the physician who does not give it precedence over the much despised symptoms. Here let us digress, yet to the point. Suppose we have a case of diarrhoea caused by hot weather.
This repertory, and the evaluation of the remedies contained therein, do not follow any now published. We feel it safe to grade the remedies according to the majority of good prescribers rather than to the dictation of any one man. This conclusion is arrived at after nothing the variation of the evaluation in the various repertories.
This is rather a lengthy paper for a question that could be answered by single syllable. But there are many questions to be asked and explained before the answer can be appreciated and accepted. It would rather surprise me to have a real homoeopath ask such a question.
It is of the needed things, for those who busy with a great many patients, and I want to confirm the doctors findings, in the main. We do waste a great deal of time, but it is necessary to teach the younger members to be a little more painstaking. It seems necessary that they should take the longer route, at least for a while, but as we get along in our work, we do learn these shortcuts that are really valuable and in no way impair the good of the work.
Among the list of patients sent was a very case of eczema, especially marked on the hands. The hands were a disgusting sight, cracked and oozing profusely a sticky gluey fluid. He was a printer by trade, also book binder, and his hands were blue with ink most of the time. Under Graphites 1M. he made a splendid recovery.
The symptoms most necessary to know, and essential, are those produced directly on EVERY normally healthy human being, and not those individual symptoms produced by the drugs arousing the latent predispositions peculiar to the individual himself, no matter how prominent or important such symptoms may appear.
There is a great tendency to shriveling, mucous membranes of mouth and lips shrivel, and become wrinkled, mucous membrane of throat looks leathery and wrinkled, these are sure indications for Ars., such causes being very malignant in character. Euthanasia, use higher potencies. No other remedy has burning in so marked degree, better heat.

Hahnemann, above all others, worked against almost over-whelming odds, obstacles, ignorance, and prejudice. He worked alone on a subject that required not a single person but a hundred. His task was not only gargantuan, but on top of that he was hounded, threatened, persecuted, and driven from place to place. So that any omissions, shortcomings, or things overlooked on his part are most highly excusable.
Were all these men, who either volunteered or were drafted, of the highest physical type and in the very best of health? If they were not then it was the medical inspectors fault for passing them a fault for which our Government was fully responsible. Through Government compulsion the veterans were compelled to face and endure two serious dangers the German bayonets and the doctors hypodermic needles.
This education must contain a knowledge of the true philosophy of sickness, and also of the nature of the curing agents, and of the rules for the use of these for the solution of clinical problems. A medical education in this sense is an education which enables one, before a case of sickness, to put his hand on the specific agent which will cure it.
Usually wakens with anger. The membrane, usually gray or white, begins on the right side and either stays there or travels over to the left, and is noticed especially on the tonsils, especially the right, is profuse, and extends to the nose. High fever. Swollen tongue and tonsils. Nose obstructed; fanlike motion of alae nasi; obliged to breath through mouth with tongue protruded. Sensitive to cold.
In the proving we are sorry to be compelled to state that Mrs. P. had no result whatever, which was quite a disappointment to us as we wished to see how it would affect the female, especially the menses. Dr. John H. Clarke thought perhaps that “shifting pains would be proven to be characteristic”. Neither Dr. D.T.P. nor I was able to confirm this.
While we are gathered here to revere the memory of that greatest physician the world has ever known, whose soul might rise above that of the average man, let us all rise- and drink-to the memory of SAMUEL
Potentization came about other through accident than though a knowledge of the reason why. Had they known that the resistance of the drugs physical envelope must be reduced before the drug could act at its best, that the secretions could the more easily act upon that physical envelope in order to more readily free the contained force therein, potentization would have been a scientific operation rather than a cautious experiment.
THE CLINICAL USES OF DIGITALIS. Modern views on digitalis therapy demand that at the outset an adequate dose should be given, sufficient to exert the desired control upon the heart muscle. This frequency necessitates an initial dose of several drachms of the tincture, and the daily amount required for maintaining the desired control may exceed the maximum pharmacopoeial dose.
The main effort seemed to concentrate on not how accurate, but on how large a Materia medica he could produce, or compile. Perhaps, under existing circumstances, that was the best thing to do as it gave us more proven remedies than we might have had otherwise. But, symptoms were noted, collected, and piled in, irrespective of value or classification, whether primary, secondary, or merely parasitic.
Hahnemann taught the efficacy of smell doses. He showed that when drugs are prescribed according to the homoeopathic law, it is indispensably necessary that the doses be small, and that infinitesimal doses are more efficacious than large ones.
Weepy disposition; cries violently with facial jactitation or alternating with laughing and weeping. Piteous wailing. Inconsolable anxiety. Peevish, impatient. Screams aloud from least touch; with pain. Throws self about, constantly changing position; cannot continue long at one thing. Music unbearable, makes one sad. Sad and solicitous. Timid, especially after fright and about the dark.
Homoeopathy needs, and it needs it badly, the work on diseases of the skin, and therapeutics which are not a rehash of allopathy with merely a few names of homoeopathic remedies sprinkled in a work which will show to the public the superiority of the higher potencies in skin diseases, and their advantages over the ignorant uses of crude, and near crude, drugs and all kinds of impossible local applications.
Concerning the man who had his finger opened I would like to attract the attention of the profession to the inanity of spreading infection by forcing the products of infection into the lymphatics with the knife. Why do not some of our keen eyed pathologists watch that process and tell the profession just what goes on after the knife has been thrust into the bed of inflamed infected tissue.
We think the above remedies are brought out sufficiently clear to avoid confusion, and if not given too often or too low, should reduce both complications and deaths to a minimum. The whole science and art of homoeopathic prescribing lies not alone in ones knowledge of the various remedies and how to distinguish between them, but in knowing to elicit the proper indications for the remedy from the patient.
Homoeopathy seeks the origin of disease, condones strict individualization only, knows how to proceed, knows beforehand, and in time, and is in strict accord with nature. On the other hand allopathy seeks the end product, condones only standardization and is directly opposed to nature and must, consequently, of necessity fail. How can we honestly attempt to teach those two opposites?
The electrocardiogram has shown, according to Stecher, that digitalis is definitely contra-indicated in diphtheria, as has been generally maintained by pediatricians. Stecher reports nineteen cases of heart block occurring in patients with diphtheria all of whom were over twenty years of age. All had received early administration of antitoxin. Death occurred in every one of those cases of heart block within ten days.
Then we must find as many symptoms as possible of undoubted reliability which appear under no other known remedy than the one under consideration, and lastly, all those symptoms for which the remedy under consideration is the undisputed leader. In this way one studies from the center or heart of the remedy to its circumstance or from its most important to its least important symptoms.
The great majority of us go into disease ignorant of how to combat it, it scares the very life out of us, then we begin to dope and dope and dope, simply because on top of this ignorance and fear we do not know our materia medica. In this way we pile up, on top of the original disease, an artificial drug disease for which eventually the very best prescriber on earth could never find a remedy.
The truly philosophical mind is the truly unprejudiced mind. The most flagrant mark of ignorance any being can display is to close his mind to conviction. This one act alone cost us just thirty years of loss to ourselves and injury to our patients, a wrong we can never right. We have been dubbed intolerant and prejudiced because we would not hark back to the falsity we had left behind, but never by men who had anything better to offer.
Our experience teaches us that if we have taken the history properly, seen that the remedy secured therefrom bore the individualistic mark or stamp, and the proper potency was selected, and the patient was not beyond the reach of medicine, we had no failures, and the need for frequent repetitions of the remedy reduced to a minimum. Wherever any remedy of any kind will act, homoeopathy will not disappoint.
Hahnemann placed no idle stigma when he said: “When we have to do with an art whose end is the saving of human life, any neglect to make ourselves thoroughly master of the same becomes a crime.” Of course in going back to allopathy, in ceasing the unfolding of homoeopathy and in the ceasing of drug provings we are making ourselves thoroughly masters of the art of healing, are we not?.
There is no improved homoeopathy except improved fraud. Boenninghausen was right when he said” “Ever more gloriously will Homoeopathy unfold its banner; ever more brightly will it beam in the firmament of science; ever more full of curative virtues she will show her wonderful powers if she is not decked with false finger or disfigured with borrowed attire or ornaments”.
The question naturally arises, is the sole object of medicine the mere pastime of a curious coterie or the “restoration of the sick to health”? If the latter, what have the homoeopaths been doing all this time? In the past forty-two years we have treated several hundred cases of eruptive fever from the mild to the malignant, all recovered and no evil results followed.
Homoeopathy is no system for any man to espouse who has not the ability to do his own thinking. What every homoeopath needs is the ability to think for himself; to observe; to take the case; to find the similimum; to know how to prescribe; to know when to repeat; to know just what constitutes a cure, a palliation or a suppression; and a uniform set of tools with which to accomplish the end in view.
Samuel relates that the children, being left alone one day, nearly died of fright when they heard a woodpecker at work on the wall of the house outside and dared not look out to see what it was. They told their parents about it when they came home and, instead of having it explained to them, were told that it was “the Knocker,” who would always come if they did not do as they were bid.
Homoeopathy is to prevention what it is to cure-the only effective method. We challenge any doctor to produce its equal. Its opponents and others have accused its supporters of making it a fetish. A fetish is something made by art, artificial, factitious. Homoeopathy is a stern reality built on the firm rock of natural law and as firm as the rock it stands on. Homoeopathy is indeed exotic.
Then why be stampeded? Why all the hysteria? Why the instillation of Satanic fear in the heart of the student or the doctor in embryo? Fear is the child of ignorance. It belongs, in medicine, to allopathy. An acquaintance and association with allopathy breeds and fosters fear, while the same with homoeopathy breeds and fosters courage and confidence.
The first impressions are the lasting ones among the majority of us and if the students of homoeopathy get their first impressions from real homoeopaths in real homoeopathic institutions we shall have no trouble in laying and maintaining a firm foundation for homoeopathy.
The biologist deals simply with the tangible, material end of life, just as the pathologist deals with the material end of disease, both being the exact reverse of homoeopathy, so of what value is their estimate or opinion of a subject on which they know very little, if anything at all? Modern medical science (?) appears to mean simply a change of opinion, nothing more.
How many of us today dare heed Hahnemanns injunction to put homoeopathy to the test and publish the failures to the world? Is not our greatest reason for not heeding that injunction: We are afraid because it would either show up our ignorance of homoeopathy or our deceit toward it? In order to hide this ignorance we find it easier to take the course of least resistance and condemn that which we do not have the ability to disprove.
Diagnosis, at the best, is simply a guess aided and abetted by intuition and keen observation, the latter a trait to be cultivated by us all. The absence of diagnosis is not fatal if the remedy is indicated, otherwise how could the above-related cases have been cured? And how does it correspond to the following true occurrences. From one of our factories a man was sent home, sick.
