The symptoms of Sanguinaria point to its use in catarrh. Here the Sanguinaria nitrate seems to be especially useful. Its profuse lachrymation, discharge from nose and from the posterior nares, tinged with blood, make it a remedy in influenza. It has ulcerative ozaena with epistaxis and in such cases is invaluable. The stinging, tickling and swelling of the parts indicate this remedy.

Like all members of this family the Rhus invasion first show itself in the skin, inflaming and irritating it. Upon the glandular system it produces painful swellings, inflammation and suppuration. Upon the organs of locomotion, especially the tendons it causes aching, soreness, stiffening and pain.

An inquiry into the condition of the home developed the fact that the father was a coffee manufacturer and merchant, being extensively engaged in the roasting and packing of coffee extracts and essences. The pains are insupportable, and the patient feels them most intensely.

When walking he feels anxious, as if some one were pursuing him. Seems to have two wills, one commanding what the other forbids. Two different influences seem to be exerted upon him at the same time, one to do murder and the other to do good. Sanguinaria is an irritant whether taken or applied, so, as a first effect, we have tissue irritation. The brain is irritated and we have as mental symptoms anxiety, which is always present. There is also irritability, the patient being morose, peevish and excitable. The ears are also irritated, there is redness of the external ear, humming and roaring in the ears. These symptoms are due mostly to the increased and irregular circulation of the blood.

Homoeopathically this is a useful remedy in vomiting, especially if it is reflex and of cerebral origin, such as in vomiting of pregnancy and sea sickness. Apomorphia is a very powerful poison and you should remember that even the old school dose of it to produce vomiting is from 1/10 to 1/25 of a grain. The 6x trituration is as low as it should be given.

CHELIDONIUM MAJUS

These latter symptoms are also found under Lycopodium. The cough is rattling yet the expectoration is not easily raised. It is also indicated in diarrhoea attending infantile pneumonia or capillary bronchitis, desire for milk and wine, hot drinks, much rumbling, worse at night. There is often an aching and gnawing pain in the stomach relieved by eating, but worse from pressure.

The value of our remedies cannot be measured by pathological anatomy. Natural and drug diseases are two entirely different conditions; the laws of one have no power in the other, nor can they have any, because those conditions, are not only different from, but totally opposed to one another.
