POINTERS

Itching and burning, with eruptions, give me the index for success with Graphites. Three doses of the 200th recently cured, by these indices, a bad cases of urticaria (?) with vesicles, suggestive of herpes, in a young and sensitive woman (who has to weep from the distress she endured). There was also retarded menstruation from wet feet. Rhus poisoning is also met by Graphites.

COMMUNICATIONS

The kind of flies bothers the fly-paper little, but at some future date the wrong kind of members might bother the Association much. If a man realizes that he is in the wrong pew and resigns his respect is maintained and the membership is saved the unpleasantness of asking him to go. A person bent on ruining the organization and refusing to resign could cause the members much unpleasant trouble.

EDITORIAL

In this record a cross record index of remedy and parts affected if you keep your journals. If you are among those unfortunate ones who lose or misplace journals, either cut and paste the articles on the remedies or write or type them in full or part. Then make the cross index of the part affected. This will not require much labor and the time spent will repay itself many times over.

COMMUNICATIONS

The homoeopaths of Ohio need a renewed introduction to homoeopathy, and Dr. Rowland has given them a good start. It was a severe arraingement of the members, when our only colored representative present arose to remark that “that was the first and only homoeopathic paper he had heard since he graduated.

CARRIWITCHETS

Hahnemann began his investigations with a definite object in view, and after thorough, patient, intelligent, systematic study and comparison, after many tedious, prolonged, and self- sacrificing ordeals, at last succeeded in reducing the fragmentary observations of his predecessors to order, and thus by inductive philosophy was enabled to work out and announce to the world the existence of an heretofore unsuspected universal law of cure-not an occasional means of cure as was anticipated by Stahl and others, but a universal natural law of cure.

CARRIWITCHETS

A triangle or trinity exists in every case; the mental symptoms, the physical symptoms, and the remedy. Given any two factors and the third may be inferred. The mental symptoms and the physical symptoms will indicate the remedy. the mental symptoms and the remedy will indicate the physical symptoms. The physical symptoms and the remedy will indicate the mental state.

EDITORIAL

Having taken the case, having evaluated the symptoms, having repertorized the symptoms picture of the patient you will have several remedies appearing at the top of your repertory analysis. You must then go to the materia medica and know to decided between the high standing remedies. Which lacks certain essentials, which can be thrown out? Thus the knowledge of materia medica is also important.

COMMUNICATIONS

Some very valuable papers are presented before the I.H.A. We have always preferred to listen to a paper, except perhaps those written under high pressure, or as a last moment expedient, rather than to an extemporaneous talk. The reason for this is that the conscientious writer of a paper puts in some time in real thought on his subject sees how it looks in print, corrects his mistakes, and sees where he can improve his expression, or convey a better idea.

CARRIWITCHETS

Examination revealed no organic lesion, but there was a definite history of the trouble beginning after a psychoanalysis. Heloderma was prescribed in the 30 dilution t.d.s. and in two days the symptoms which had troubled the patient for three years had disappeared. The anxiety state persisted but in a greatly diminished form.

HOMOEOPATHY AND SURGERY

If we concede that surgery is necessary, let us not neglect out duties as homoeopathic physicians; let us not forget that surgery does not cure. Let the surgeon do his work, and we will continue to take care of the patient, prescribing for him during his incarceration, and if he still needs it, after his release from the hospital. It will be homoeopathy that cures the patient after the menace to life is removed.

THE CHRONIC CHILD

Somewhere between the actual and theoretical lies the field of possibilities open to us; it is to the extent that we avail ourselves of these possibilities that our success may be measured. We must face the face that there are always obstacles that may prove insurmountable; there is the ever present possibility of conditions beyond our control. There are hereditary tendencies that may be cured but may not be eradicated in one generation.

DEALING WITH SUPPRESSIONS IN CHILDREN

There is one red threat running through all these records – the personality of the remedy and its peculiar applicability in certain symptomatic groups. For instance, note the places where Zincum has been found peculiarly appropriate in releasing suppressions; these touch, almost invariably,.nervous imbalance. Apis has its characteristic congestion and inflammation. Sulphur expresses itself widely in its characteristic breadth of psoric manifestations.

COMBATING TUBERCULOSIS WITH B C G VACCINE

The cost of running these institutions is not included in these figures, nor is the amount needed for improving housing, sanitation, education and so on. The expenditure of about six crores of rupees per year for the next 15 years would probably save three and a half times that cost on the construction of institutions. Vaccination is, therefore, probably the cheapest way in which tuberculosis can be controlled.

LEDUM PALUSTRE

Ledum covers a great many of the eruptions on faces of young people, with dry pimples or red lumps; also the pimply eruptions of hard drinkers. There are noises as of ringing of bells in the ears; roaring, often as from a heavy wind. There is burning or burning pain in the interior of the nose, as from red-hot coals, which is < by pressure and blowing.

POINTERS

Kali nitricum has produced conditions simulating sinus trouble on the right side of the face with sense of pressure and hypersensitiveness to touch. The Aranea diadema patient has a sensation as if the hands and forearms were intensely swollen and heavy, and he will rise from his bed and get a light to see what happened to them.

THE MILKS AS HOMOEOPATHIC AGENTS

Inherited tendencies are the gifts of the parents and are woven into the protoplasm, but the diet factor enters into the development of the individual from the very first feeding. During infancy and childhood structural diet problems take precedence over the maintenance and replacement foods required in later years, and during the early months milk is the important item of diet.

OPIUM

Opium is perhaps one of the most striking examples of development of personality of the drug through the homoeopathic method of preparation, through its recording on the prover and the manifestation of the power of the homoeopathic laws.

ODDS AND ENDS IN HOMOEOPATHIC PRACTICE

The laboratory cannot demonstrate any connection between such occurrences in many instances, and would no doubt dismiss the incidents as unrelated, pure coincidence. The homoeopath replies that there are yet many things about disease which we do not understood; there are subtleties of mental and physical states which we cannot appreciate, and the relation between body and mind is as profound as it is subtle.

MEDICAL CRISIS

Physicians wants something in which they can believe and it must be something beyond the test tube, beyond the demonstration of mathematics or beyond speculations on philosophy. They must work to develop the kind of character which will result, first, in the ability to understand what it is they wish to build from life in themselves and for their patients; and second, which will inspire in others the desire to press on to higher attainments.

THE DEFLECTED CURRENT

We are told that light waves travel in a straight line until they meet some obstacle, when they are deflected at an angle proportionate to the angle of interference. We are told that our remedies are curative in conditions closely similar to those produced by the remedy in a healthy human being.

HOMOEOPATHIC THERAPEUTICS IN THE FIELD OF ENDOCRINOLOGY

The viewpoint of the modern physiologist reflects the theory that the vast majority of human ills are traceable to dysfunction of the glandular system; that most growth problems (over-and under- development of the whole body or parts) and many maladjustments of the child to its environments, and even of the adult to his relationships and problems, are related in some degree to endocrine imbalance.

TREATMENT OF ARTHRITIS

The spine is the point of attack in many arthritic conditions; of the many remedies having this relationship, Agaricus, Daphne, Dioscorea, Formica and Nux v. are among the few is which the spinal cord itself is involved. In Nux v. this is usually the result of alcoholism.

REMEDIES COMPLEMENTARY, INIMICAL AND ANTIDOTAL

Usually the beginner learns to recognize Aconite and Belladonna among the earliest remedies in his armamentarium; to the older student of materia medica they present marked differentiating symptoms, but the novice sees chiefly marked similarity.

PULSATILLA AS AN “UNLOCKING” REMEDY

Whenever the serums have locked up the patients, as they do, very, very often Pulsatilla is the remedy, for it will unlock and undo the effects of the typhoid inoculations, inoculations for colds, and the inoculations that are given so promiscuously for hay fever. It brings out the natural symptoms and often restores the patient to his normal condition. In their words, it is pre-eminently an unlocking remedy.-Old Recorder.

PSORA OR DEFICIENCY?

Whether this tendency to the psoric manifestations develops because of inability to assimilate or inability to relax to the point of assimilation, the end results are the same, and will continue to be until corrected through more healthy and natural ways of living plus the power of the potentized remedy to release suppressions and tune the maladjustments to order.

HAY FEVER

Each case of hay fever some symptoms in common, but not every case present the same grouping of symptoms, or all of the symptoms, that go to make up the classical hay fever syndrome. Almost every case presents some atypical symptoms or concomitants that individualize the case to a degree never considered in the textbook delineations.

OUR REMEDIES WHY THEY ACT

In pursuing investigations on the border region of physics and physiology, I was amazed to find boundary lines vanishing and points of contact emerge between the realms of the Living and Non-Living. Metals are found to respond to stimuli; they are subject to fatigue, stimulated by certain drugs and “killed” by poisons.

THE PRINCIPLES AND ART OF CURE BY HOMOEOPATHY

The progress of homeopathy can be measured very largely by its publications. There are thirty or forty homeopathic journals throughout the world and there are a number of extremely active publishers who bring out book after book concerned with the new art and science of healing.

APPLIED HOMOEOPATHIC PHILOSOPHY

Suppose we have selected our remedy, that it has been administered in a seemingly suitable potency, and we have recorded definite results from it. After a time the condition returns in part. What shall be our next step? Here too we must consider the sound basis for procedure along the lines laid down by the master-thinkers and early homoeopathic scientists.

LEDUM PALUSTRE

In the mental sphere there is a strong desire for solitude, which we may note in connection with the natural habitat of the plant, for it grows in our-of-the-way places. There is a strong aversion to people because they irritate; therefore the Ledum patient keeps by himself. He actually grows to hate people, through the irritation their presence causes him.

HOMOEOPATHY AND THE FUNDAMENTAL LAWS

In other words, in even the embryonic stages of homoeopathy it was found that law governed. Gradual experimentation widened the possibilities of application of these laws; no amount of experimentation extended the laws themselves. All that experimentation could do was to enlighten our minds regarding the scope of the law.

COPY OF A LETTER WRITTEN BY DR CONSTANTINE HERING TO HIS COLLEAGUE, DR S S GUY, IN 1849

Glonoine I procured for you is the “real stuff” prepared by Apothecary Johns in Philadelphia, and is genuine. I had very little left of my own prepared in my office; it is nearly used up in experimenting. Johns prepared some merely to have the honor of succeeding. It is very difficult and not without danger to make it. It is very evaporative, can only be kept in bottles with a glass stopper fitting well.

THE MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM IN COMPARATIVE MATERIA MEDICA

Almost every extensive proving in Herings Guiding Symptoms points the way in periodicity, some remedies showing marked relationship to the time of day, as Spigelia, increasing and decreasing in aggravation as the sun rises and declines. “Lunacy” was not an idle term for periodic mental aggravations, and the homoeopathic physician is particularly fitted to meet such conditions.

JOHN HENRY CLARKE

Anyone who had met Clarke but a few times, even only once, must have been impressed with the feeling of an exceptional human being, a forceful personality, a man apart. He was literally a man apart, as he took his work and his mission so seriously that he gave himself very little time to mix with others. Perhaps, also, there were very few with whom he felt in harmony.

ATYPICAL CASES OF SALIVARY GLAND INVOLVEMENT

A curious thing about these four cases is that in both instances the two cases showed the same symptoms at practically the same time, although not having any relationship to the other in the matter of location in the city, nor even being in the same social circles.

CARRIWITCHETS

There is some pain in the intestines, not very severe, cramp-like, which comes and goes, with much gas in the intestines. Intestinal pain is better by deep massage, pressure against something, from motion and decidedly better from heat. There is gas “with everything eaten” and with the gas tendency to nausea which is better after the gas comes up.

EDITORIAL

Homoeopathy is reaching thousands but its benefits should extend to million more. Nothing short of active, whole-hearted cooperation on the part of all Hahnemannians will ever bring this about. If the beneficiaries, the patients and friends of homoeopathic physicians cannot be interested in the perpetuation and extension of homoeopathic methods of treatment just who or what class of individuals are we to approach?.

POINTER

Flouric acid. Necrosis especially of long bones, and ear. Discharge offensive, thin, acrid, excoriating. Better by cold, worse heat (Puls.). Series Puls., Sil., Fluoric acid. Vicious bone disease, calcareous degeneration, thigh and leg bones with chronic fistulous openings and excoriating pus. Affects temporal bone, mastoid process: pains burning, intermittent, discharge thick, acrid.

BARYTA CARBONICA

As a first argument in evidence of the verity of our Hahnemannian position, let me state that we know very little of the pathological conditions of the great majority of affections we are called upon to treat. What is the pathology of rheumatism, and in what possible way can the pathological condition of the case explain why Bryonia is indicated where the patient is worse from movement and Rhus tox.

It was a severe arraingement of the members, when our only colored representative present arose to remark that “that was the first and only homoeopathic paper he had heard since he graduated.

EDITORIAL

During the past winter months the Connecticut Homoeopathic Medical Society has been having a series of lectures and round table discussions. Pure Hahnemannian philosophy, proper case taking with symptoms evaluation, and an analysis of repertory study were thoroughly presented by Dr. H.A. Roberts, and practical application made to cases from several of the doctors private practices.

POINTERS

The following peculiar symptom was present in a very serious chronic case given up by allopathic physicians: Every time she urinates she jumps from a sharp pain as if a sharp instrument had been stuck under the great toe nail. After careful search through many repertories this symptom was found in Allens Symptom- Register. This strange symptom proved to be the key that unlocked the remedy. Sulphur was the remedy and under its administration the patient improved greatly.

CARRIWITCHETS

Homoeopaths could give their homoeopathic medicines by injections but to what purpose? In the first place, the method of administration is an unnatural way of putting anything into the body. In the second place the medicine will act just as quickly by mouth. The rapidity with which the medicine acts is in direct ratio as to how well it is indicated.

DISCUSSION OF CASE I BOENNINGHAUSEN METHOD OF REPERTORIZING

After studying the case as presented, and recognizing the miasmatic background, we feel that phosphorus covers the whole condition better than any other remedy, in spite of the fact that phosphorus may not bear the proven relationship to some of the tissues as might be considered desirable on a strictly pathological basis.

EDITORIAL

This repertory is a long list of symptoms compiled by Dr. Kent and his pupils from all the repertories existing at that time, and from clinical verifications from private practice. These are arranged according to a very definite schema. It is only after long and careful study that one is able to thoroughly master this marvellous book. And it well merits such study.

ABSTRACT OF REPORT OF THE BUSINESS MANAGER

The general makeup of the journal has been maintained on a high plane and we have striven to hold our position without rancor, believing that homoeopathy is such a tremendous and vital subject that by teaching its truths in a positive and constructive way we can best show the value of our art of healing, avoiding criticism of those who differ from us.

POINTERS

The most pressing question at the present time for the physician to ascertain is whether the treatment of disease is to depend on mere opinion, which varies with each doctor and perishes with the individual, or on laws which, founded on the immutable truth of facts, can never perish, but must endure through all ages.

EDITORIAL

An interesting sidelight in these days of economic pressure is that many of our gifts are coming from points outside of the United States. Some of these gifts are small, and some are coming from far distant, isolated places where The Recorder has a peculiarly heightened value, in that it is the only link between homoeopathic pioneers and their homoeopathic background.

POINTERS

Sepia is indicated almost as frequently in men as in women, and yet, like Pulsatilla, we continue to refer to it as a womans remedy. Careful use of the repertories will tend to prevent such unwarranted and unhomoeopathic generalizations. Any remedy in the entire materia medica may be indicated in either sex at any age and in any so-called disease.

CARRIWITCHETS

Punctured wounds in farmhands that have been contaminated from manure should be cleansed thoroughly with sterile water and calendula or ledum tincture in solution. The dressing should be applied with a drain in the wound. Internal remedies may be given, selection made according to the indications. If there is much burning, stinging pain, Apis may be indicated.

CONSTANTINE HERING

From Dresden he was sent upon an expedition to Surinam, a Dutch colony in the north of South America, its purpose being the examination of the interesting flora and fauna there, a commission to which young Hering devoted himself with great enthusiasm. He there made the acquaintance of German missionaries, Moravians, to whom he soon became a friend and medical adviser.

THE RELATION OF ACUTE DISEASES TO THE CHRONIC MIASM

In our study of the acute manifestations of disease we realize that these are an effort on the part of Nature to assist in throwing off some of the chronic miasms. It is an effort similar to that of the mill-pond or reservoir which foments and stirs itself to the bottom at intervals in its saprophytic action to purify itself.

CARRIWITCHETS

Many apparently incurable disorders can be traced indubitably to the use of tea, coffee, tobacco and stimulants. But on this point just one word it is seldom wise to tell a man that tobacco is hurting him. He will simply call in another physician. Use antidotes, and patch up the case the best way you can, and let him pay for his indulgence by consulting you from time to time.

POINTERS

Varicose veins of the thighs and legs have been cured by Aesculus (Fluoric acid). The varicose tendency is a striking feature of Aesculus; engorged veins after the sore throat has been cured; varicose, engorged veins in the eye after eye trouble has been cured; varicose veins with rheumatic complaints, varicosities of the rectum.

COMMUNICATIONS

Medically, homoeopathy, when completed, will be found to be everything in medicine, as no cure, nor benign relief, can either be made, or given, that is not based on natural law. And as homoeopathy alone acknowledges and operates under natural law, there is no other method eligible to be considered. No one will ever be able to define its limits, or when it is too late to apply it, or when it cease to act.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF HOMOEOPATHY

Fincke has shown that in the development and growth of the child much can be done to make this symmetrical, for it is closely related to the laws of assimilation; here the laws of similia have preeminence, for the child is peculiarly under the influence of the laws of action and reaction as applied to the action of the similar remedy in its development and growth.

RECKLESS AND FUTILE SURGERY

RECKLESS AND FUTILE SURGERY. LAST winter we had a case come in. This woman was thirty-two years or age. When she was seventeen she had scarlet fever and she was sick six months, under the old school treatment. She recovered sufficiently and then about six months afterward, developed a case of inflammatory rheumatism.

A NEW ANALYTICAL REPERTORY

This system depends largely upon the relation of the concomitant symptoms, and the number of symptoms has been reduced to the least number that has seemed convenient to work with. The rubrics which Dr.Boger finds necessary and which have not already appeared in the repertory as it was published are sent to the subscribers as the additions are brought out, so that ther will eventually be more rubrics than there are now.

THE SPIDER POISONS

The Latrodectus mactans is the largest spider of its family. It sometimes attains a length of one-half inch. The abdomen is round and the whole body is a velvety black, except a bright red spot underneath and one or more red spots over the spinnerets and along the middle of the back.

POINTERS

Lachesis has many symptoms like Merc., abscesses aggravated by heat, sadness, despondency, hypersensitiveness, weakness, trembling, worse touch and light pressure, constriction, sun, heat and sleep. Physical and mental exhaustion, loquacity, left sided, hot perspiration. Abscesses dark, dusky, purplish. Tissues surrounding have a purple, mottled appearance. Pus thin, dark, ichorous, offensive.

CASE II-REPERTORIZED BY THE BOENNINGHAUSEN METHOD

It appears then of no slight importance, so far as practical results are concerned, in certain cases and especially in those in which the antisycotic remedies are indicated, to administer an intercurrent dose of high potency of Thuja, just as we give in parallel circumstances a dose of Sulphur or Mercurius.

A STUDY OF HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES IN RELATION TO RHEUMATIC TROUBLES

We may have out own ideas as to the metabolism causing rheumatic disturbances; these should be considered in each individual case and treated with due regard to the dietetic and hygienic care, but after all is said and done, diet and the modification of metabolism will not cure rheumatic troubles, and it is only by careful work and after careful study of the Homoeopathic remedies that we get the brilliant results that are possible in this class of cases.

THE HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT OF METASTASES OF RHEUMATIC FEVER IN RELATION TO THE HEART

The gastric disturbances are associated with a peculiar sensation as if the stomach we hanging or swimming in water. Then there is a sudden,m sharp aching pain that starts in the back. There is also sharp pain across the chest and in the region of the heart. The pulse is weak and small. the pains are relieved by motion and are aggravated at night and in cool air.

A STUDY OF HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES IN RELATION FOR TO RHEUMATIC TROUBLES

Guaiacum is useful in rheumatic affections, especially after the abuse of mercury; in rheumatism with contraction of tendons or fibrous tissues; in the growing pains of children; in women suffering from rheumatism when associated with ovarian and menstrual irregularities; when ther is a tendency for alternating tonsillar and rheumatic troubles.

A STUDY OF HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES IN RELATION TO RHEUMATIC TROUBLES

It is of the utmost importance that our materia medica should always retain this quality of “purity”, this freedom from fiction and from hypothesis. Very justly, therefore, of the leaders of our school denounce and discourage all attempts to incorporate into the materia medica speculations upon the modus operandi of remedies, and inferences concerning the diseases which they may be likely to cure.

ERYSIPELAS

In the homoeopathic treatment of erysipelas we have a very rich field of remedies, and remedies that control the condition promptly and effectively. The cases that come to us call distinctly for the indicated remedy, and almost always for some one of the major deep-acting remedies; for we must remember that this is a sudden eruption of the psoric base.

PYROGEN

The patient is pale, sickly, rheumatic and stiff, together with these recurrent abscesses, which will date back to a sepsis of some kind. In the chronic states, the complaints practically always date back to a septic condition. The patient says she has never been well since she had puerperal fever years ago. Again, it is to be thought of in cases of Brights disease where there has been a septic base years before.

TEMPERAMENTS

Now what is true of Phosphorus is true of every remedy in our materia medica. In sickness we must not put a limitation on our remedies, when they are so broad as to cause an action on all kinds of provers, both men and animals, and are curative in all diseases of men and animals, whether or no they are of the classic types that produce the best provers.

PROGRESSIVE HOMOEOPATHY

Homoeopathy has shown steady growth up to the present time. The vision which the American Foundation for Homoeopathy has for the next ten years, and their determination to reach this objective within this period of time, will carry the banner of homoeopathy still higher during the present generation. Homoeopathy has progressed and it will progress; it is imperishable and it cannot die.

THE USE OF THE HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES IN INFECTIONS

A remedy not often though of in septic states, yet one which is very valuable indeed when its characteristic indications are present, is Arnica. Arnica is suited to those low septic conditions, especially those brought on from traumatic injuries to the tissues. The part is exceedingly sore, and the patient complains of every part he lies on being sore to the touch.

PRESERVING LIFE IN ACUTE DISEASES OF THE ABDOMEN

Doubtless it is the duty of the true physician to endeavor to eradicate the chronic condition before it gives rise to the violent attack of acute trouble which we all dread to see. No physician, however skilful he may be, is always able to do this. Many times his first call to the patient is made, when an attack of terrible pain has made the attendance of a physician necessary.

ATYPICAL SCARLET FEVER

The mother undoubtedly had a typical scarlet fever and the child also had the disease in utero. She was very fortunate in having the disease before delivery and thereby eliminating the septic condition so often met in pregnant mothers at delivery if brought in contact with scarlet fever.

VINCENTS ANGINA

On the fifth day the cellulitis was less on right side, but more on the left. Lyc, was given and seemed to help, but during the night of the fifth day he was very restless after midnight-he vomited some, and there was a bloody discharge expectorated and from the nose and throat. Marked toxic conditions were supervening. Culture showed the presence of Vincents Angina.

MONOTONY

Modern criminology has its rogues gallery, wherein it records photographs, measurements and thumb-prints of offenders against society. Homoeopathic materia medica has its Rogues Gallery, with just as unmistakable records. The homoeopathic physician follows the old adage and sets a rogue to catch a rogue.
