CALCAREA HYPOPHOSPHOROSA

1 d. Experiments on the warm – blooded animal show that on the injection of Zj, or less, of the drug, the action of the heart is very rapidly slowed in its movements; and that this slowing is chiefly due to central inhibitory stimulation is shown by the fact that if the vagi be cut before the drug is given the slowing does not occur, and also, if after the drug has slowed the heart the vagi be cut, the inhibition no longer remains. The fall of arterial pressure produced by the drug is due in great part to the cardiac depression which it produces, since asphyxia will cause a rise in pressure, and the pressure returns nearly to normal as soon as the heart gets rid of the drug which has been suddenly injected into it. Respiration ceases some moments before the cardiac arrest. (Hare, Medorrhinum News, March 12, 1887.)

After 100 min. taken by a healthy subject, the sphygmogram invariably exhibits a marked fall in tension, with increased frequency of beat. Similar effects were caused by 50 and even 25 min., though less in degree; they began within 3 m., and were marked within 8; at 30 m. a slight rise occurred, in an hours a fall again, and after 4 hours the tension was barely normal. A full dose in some subjects induces slight faintness and depression. (Leech, Pract., xxxi.)

Richard Hughes
Dr. Richard Hughes (1836-1902) was born in London, England. He received the title of M.R.C.S. (Eng.), in 1857 and L.R.C.P. (Edin.) in 1860. The title of M.D. was conferred upon him by the American College a few years later.

Hughes was a great writer and a scholar. He actively cooperated with Dr. T.F. Allen to compile his 'Encyclopedia' and rendered immeasurable aid to Dr. Dudgeon in translating Hahnemann's 'Materia Medica Pura' into English. In 1889 he was appointed an Editor of the 'British Homoeopathic Journal' and continued in that capacity until his demise. In 1876, Dr. Hughes was appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Organization of the International Congress of Homoeopathy Physicians in Philadelphia. He also presided over the International Congress in London.
