14 b. May 2nd. – Took 10 gr. of crude drug before eating. Soon after throat began to feel sore and dry. 11, throat worse, face flushed, headache in occiput and right side; pulse 78; legs feel heavy; shooting pains in various parts, worse in chest. 3, pains in throat less severe; right tonsil enlarged, slight exudate upon it; pains all over at times; very irritable and cross, feel like swearing; nervous feeling is returning, cannot apply mind to business or anything else. E., mind runs on lewd thoughts; feel very ” ugly; ” want to swear one minute and tell a lewd story the next (quite unlike usual disposition); nervous twitching in left chest returns. 3rd. – Passed a very restless n., dreaming voluptuously all the time; ” to say I feel devilish will express my meaning exactly; ” throat improving. On waking this m. was seized with severe pain, extending from os pubis through to rectum; it was severe and cramp – like, and was relieved only by movement of bowels; appetite capricious, wants sour or sweet dainties, this craving alternates with desire for food; mental state continues same, ” lewd thoughts possess me, I want to swear without cause, I never experienced such a state before.” 4th. – Slept poorly; horrid lustful dreams all n., felt exhausted by them; frontal headache; mental state as before; throat nearly well; urine of strong odour. 5th. – Slept better last n. Throat about well; bad taste in mouth; twitching in left chest continues. 6th – 8th. – All symptoms subsided. (Ibid.)

15. T. J. B -, man of phlegmatic temp.; in good health, pulse 78. May 27th. – Took 10 gr. of crude drug at 8 p. m. Heaviness of head with drowsiness, yawning, and languor; dull aching in small of back, on bending forward it feels as if it would break; legs feel too heavy to carry; soreness all along spine with stiffness, cannot bend forward without pain; sore aching in region of scapula. All symptoms relieved by sitting, or standing, or walking about. At 3 a. m., pulse 86; urine light – coloured and profuse. 28th. – Pulse 86. Took 5 gr. of crude drug. Dull frontal headache; itching of hand as if stung by nettles; pain along spine, worse in lumbar region; feeling of lump in throat, with pulsations in it when lying down; sharp neuralgic pain over left eye, extending to vertex; heavy tired feeling in legs, with shooting pains from groin down inner side to knee. 29th. – P. 80; neuralgic pains in frontal region; pressing pains in cardiac region; urine light coloured, profuse, with whitish sediment; stool difficult. 16. A. W. W -, man of lymphatic temp.; has never been ill; pulse 65. April 3rd. – Took 10 gr. of 2x trit. dry on tongue at 7:25 a. m. 7:30, neuralgic pain in left testicle, inf. and post. portion, of momentary duration, but returning at intervals for 1/2 hours 7.37, neuralgic pains in right temporal region, afterwards in right foot and toes. 7:45, peculiar taste in mouth, no cause; neuralgic pains in foot, also in right ear. 7:55, salivation, with chilliness down back; pulse normal. 8, neuralgic pains in right temple and foot; itching of calf. 8:15, chilliness returns, rumbling and griping in bowels. 8:20, pressure in perinaeum; right frontal headache. 8:35, nose stopped; drawing in left inguinal region; testes tender to touch and seem swollen. 9, repeated chilliness; pulse normal; feet and hands cold; sharp pain in left hypochondrium, increased by motion. 9:15, no appetite for breakfast; eating causes desire for stool, which is loose, with much flatus; testes sore and heavy during m., wished I had a suspensory bandage to wear. 17. Miss M. de N -, florid complexion, sound health, pulse 78, resp. 19. Jan. 7th, 8th, and 9th. – Took 10 gr. of 6x and 2x trits. without effect. 10th. – Took 10 gr. of 1x at 11 a. m. Soon felt pain in right ovarian region, dull and oppressive, increased by deep inspiration and by motion; pain continued till noon. 9 p. m., sharp neuralgic pains in left side of head, quite severe; came in paroxysms and continued some time. 11th. – 9 a. m., pain in head gone, but it feels weak and confused; languid feeling all over and no appetite for breakfast; tongue is much coated, yellowish white in patches. 13th. – Coating on tongue now gone, and she is well as usual. 18. Millson R. Allen, student, took 5 gr. of crude drug with no effect. (Ibid., 1888, p. 145.)

19. C. W. Benedict, student, took same with like absence of result. (Ibid.)

20. B. L. Baker, student, health good, uses tobacco and coffee. 1st day – Took 5 gr. of crude drug at 8 a. m. P. m., had some pain in lower bowels due to wind, and relieved by passing offensive flatus. 2nd day – No symptoms. 3rd day – At 10:30 a. m. sudden stitching pain in region of left kidney, worse from deep breathing; lasted about an h. No stool. 4th day – Same pain as yesterday, and at same h. Some collection of flatus causing colicky pain and relieved as on 1st d. No stool. 5th day – Bowels moved slightly at 8 a. m.; stool at first hard, then soft. At 11:30 a loose stool, preceded at 10:30 by flatulent pain, quite severe for a few moments. 6th day – Two loose stools in m., relieving pain in lower bowels which preceded them. No further effects. 21. a. T. L. Macdonald, student, health good, uses no narcotics or stimulants. 1st day – Took 5 gr. at 8:15 a. m. In 15 m., while singing, slight dull aching in forehead, from temple to temple, more marked on right side; it continued during d. About 11 a. m. fancied he felt slight trembling and weakness, especially in legs, while standing. On next 4 m. was awakened early with sexual orgasm.

22 b. After 3 weeks took 10 gr. at 8:30 a. m., fasting. At 11 heart and pulse were acting with increased force. No further effect from drug; and two additional doses of same, on 3rd and 5th day, were equally without result. (Ibid.)

22. W. F. Minnard, student; health good, uses no narcotics. 1st day – Took 10 gr. at 11:50 a. m., at which hours pulse was 76 lying, 80 sitting, 90 standing; temp. 98.6 o. 2nd day – At 10:40 p. m. pulse 66 lying, 72 sitting, 80 standing; temp. 97.2 o. Have had a dull indescribable occipital headache, which began before I rose in m. and went off during supper; worse from stooping and after going upstairs. At different times little aching pains have seemed to locate themselves for a moment in one place, these go off, and after a while come again in some other part of the body. Since noon have had some dull backache in lumbar region, worse while sitting; and have urinated oftener than usual since 2:30 p. m. (urine natural). Feet cold greater part of day, and cold chills have gone over body occasionally. 3rd day – Slight occipital headache since 10 a. m., lasting till after supper. Since noon have had backache, centring from 4 to 5 p. m. in lumbar region. 4th day – For 5 m. after breakfast distressed sensation in epigastrium. From 4 to 5 p. m. headache in occiput, with the backache and a tired feeling. Now and then in afternoon piercing pains in upper third of femur. 5th day – About 1:30 a. m. awoke with dull heavy occipital headache and sick stomach. In a short time went to sleep again, but had troublesome dreams. Arose at 7:30, with back part of head feeling too large, and with sense of fatigue; but all symptoms passed off after breakfast, and I have since felt quite well. (Ibid.)

23. Everett B. Finney, student, took 5 gr., and, a week later, 10 gr. without effect. (Ibid.)

I. 2. C. Dilute muriatic acid was saturated with left causticum and carbonicum, and evaporated. In m. a drop was put on tongue, upper surface of which became numb, as if fat were on it. After 3 – 5 m., throbbing pain in left humerus, extending upwards from middle, at different intervals, as if something were dropping or slipping outward; painful dulness in right side of head, though not sharply defined, also in upper part of left side; painful dulness in left lower back teeth; unusual weariness after exerting arms, and burning in them. After an hours, throbbing pain in right ankle. After 2 1/2 hours, pain in heart, upper and inner part; frequent heat in face. (Hom. Viertelj., xiv., 97.)

7. Dr. Gosewich took 1/4 dr. of 3rd dil. of above with sugar of milk. After about 2 hours he had several slight sensations – feeling of warmth in pit of stomach, more towards left side; pain in middle of vertex; pain in forehead above right eye; pricking in anus; dull pain through whole head; frequent eructations; uprising of something acid and stinging in throat (frequently); feeling as after a purge, as though diarrhoea would ensue; dull pressive pain between shoulders, and lower down on each side of spine, between shoulders and small of back; constant pain in back; heartburn; pain in lower hollow teeth of left side. On 2nd day, in m., feeling of heat and weakness in stomach, as after a purge; pain in back, only felt on remaining seated in one position for a long time. On 3rd day spasmodic twitching of right upper lid; difficult breathing through nose, as in catarrh; uprising of food and sour water; aching between shoulders, extending through to chest; sharp but not violent pain in lower left chest, transient, but frequently recurring. Same day, dull pain in same back teeth and at same time as yesterday; tip of nose red, sore, and somewhat swollen, with a rather sensitive pain, – all went off on 2nd day without suppuration. Richard Hughes
Dr. Richard Hughes (1836-1902) was born in London, England. He received the title of M.R.C.S. (Eng.), in 1857 and L.R.C.P. (Edin.) in 1860. The title of M.D. was conferred upon him by the American College a few years later.

Hughes was a great writer and a scholar. He actively cooperated with Dr. T.F. Allen to compile his 'Encyclopedia' and rendered immeasurable aid to Dr. Dudgeon in translating Hahnemann's 'Materia Medica Pura' into English. In 1889 he was appointed an Editor of the 'British Homoeopathic Journal' and continued in that capacity until his demise. In 1876, Dr. Hughes was appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Organization of the International Congress of Homoeopathy Physicians in Philadelphia. He also presided over the International Congress in London.
