2. Dr. Hiller, aet. 29, health good. Dec. 7th, 1876, took 20 – 25 dr. of a saturated aqueous sol. of P. meth. about 8 a. m. It soon produced flush of heat all over body, dull heaviness across forehead, pain in left supra – orbital nerve. 8th – Slept well during n., stool a little loose this m. Took another large dose of sol. Soon after felt dull aching in left shoulder; aching and tingling in left instep, worse sitting, better in motion; flush of heat on both cheeks; pain in right groin while walking; numbness in right elbow; sharp shooting pains in left temple. 3 p. m., took 20 – 30 dr. of a tinct. made from dry root. Immediately, stitches through left brain from front to back; at intervals, sharp shooting in left supra – orbital nerve; pain in right eye when reading. 10, second stool, more difficult than in m. Repeated dose. Thereafter felt lively and wakeful, though unusually sleepy just before. (Had taken during day about Zss of tinct.) 9th. – Sharp pain under right patella, making him limp while walking; it comes and goes, and is much worse immediately after taking medicine; pain also in great toe. At noon took ” a large dose. ” 4 p. m., stitching pain in left knee when walking; tongue clean; appetite good; feeling lively; shooting pain in penis; pain in right testicle. 10th. – In m. severe pain with slight stiffness in right elbow and left knee. 4 p. m., whole right arm aches and feels heavy, with slight pains running in all directions through it; arm feels sore and tired; slight heaviness in head. 11th. – Shooting pains in great toe when moving and walking. 12th. – Resumed drug, taking large doses at intervals during d. About midday had severe pain above elbow at or near insertion of triceps. In evening felt invigorated; no pains of any kind; more lively and in better spirits than usual; inclined for work. 13th. – Took another large dose. Soon after, pain in left knee, causing limping; tingling from left elbow to fingers, as from galvanic current; heaviness in forehead; legs feel heavy from knees downwards, while walking. 3 p. m., felt somewhat drowsy and stupid, with dull frontal headache, during whole afternoon and evening 14th. – Has been annoyed with aching pain in right wrist, worse when writing. This continued all next day also. 16th. – Crampy pain in stomach lasting 1/2 hours, relieved by pressing stomach against edge of table, and by motion; aching in wrist began at 10:30, with soreness and slight prickling pain running up arm to elbow. Pain had gone by 1 p. m.; dull aching at intervals in right frontal eminence, better in open air and when moving. No further symptoms. (Ibid., p. 618.)

3. a. Dr. M. A. Wolff took tinct. 3 times a day for about a month, doses from 6 dr. to 3 and 4 teaspoonfuls. 1st day – Soon, uneasiness in head; after 1 1/2 hours, aching in whole left arm, and flushing heat in left hand, which in time changed to aching in middle and third fingers; after 4 hours, pain in 2nd joint of left thumb; after 5 hours, fatigue in both thighs, as if unable to stand on them, and pain in left toe; after 8 1/2 hours, headache and sleepiness, so great that he could hardly attend to a patient; very drowsy all day 2nd day – Great frontal headache all day, at 8 p. m. ache especially over eyes and deep – seated; very hungry at midday, but unable to eat much either then or in evening; feverish heat in left auricle and left hand, continuing up to 12th day; at n. sensation as if tongue was covered with fur or velvet. 3rd day – Went through work with uncommon cheerfulness and ease; afternoon nap dreamful; woke with great dryness of mouth and heavy perspiration. 4th day – Sensation of desiring a stool all day; burning in urethra on micturating; heaviness in upper chest behind sternum, as if filled with wind that cannot be eructated; pain in left knee when walking; pain in left foot, at outer and under border, foot itself feeling cold, with pain in right big toe; wakefulness during usual sleeping – time; at n. fragmentary sleep from 12:30 to 4:20 a. m., with varied and exciting dreams. Got up at 4:30; did excitedly all kinds of unusual office work; slept soundly 1:30 to 2:45 p. m.; curious, nonsensical, wild dreams. 6th day – Pain in left foot and toe. 7th day – Continual desire for stool; very small and hard stool (on 2 previous day it had been large and hard); pain in joint of left thumb, aggravated by pressure, and in toe of left foot. 8th day – Immediately after 1st dose, pain in frontal part of head; pressure behind eyes; singular pressure in lobules of pinna of left ear. Also on this day, pressive pain in front of head, especially left side, and deep in upper part of orbits, moving eyes hurts; formidable appetite at 8 p. m.; feeling of weakness in left hand; thumb – pain recurs, intermittently, for several hours; weariness of lower extremities all day; unusual drowsiness during day; a painful lump, threatening to become an abscess, has appeared on right forehead, just above inner canthus of right eye. 9th day – Swelling is still there, but redness and pain have gone; weariness in legs,; pain in right foot; in spite of lateness and fatigue could sleep. little at n. 10th day – Lump still swollen, but less painful. 5 p. m., frontal headache, just above eyes, with soreness of back about 2nd dorsal vertebra – this last felt still, but only on pressure, at 11:45; transient pain in left knee; felt lazy and drowsy, in evening quite worn out; feverish feeling in face and hands (especially l.). From 11th to 13th day lump on forehead gradually disappeared; bowels were, as heretofore, costive; on 12th n. a very vivid dream of a fire. 14th day – Pain and heat in whole right foot and dorsum of left hand, at 11:30 p. m. 15th day – Pressure in head, back of eyes; weariness of lower extremities all day; pain in right calf; midday sleep very heavy, much drowsiness after it. 16th. – Pain in calf keen to – day. 17th day – Slept a great deal during day 18th. – Frontal pain, left side, in evening; desire for stool all day; at noon pain in phalanges of right foot, in evening, while walking, in left foot also. 19th day – E., frontal headache; curious sense of fulness in face, as of pressure from inside outwards; stomach bloated; disagreeable dragging pain in whole left arm; pain right wrist and foot, and in toe of left foot; still frequent urging to stool. 20th day – Forced a hard stool, which caused prolapsus ani; frontal headache at 9 a. m., worse at 3 p. m.; slept from 5 to 6, hoping to sleep it off, but at 6:30 it was so severe as to compel him to take nux vom., which aggravated, and then bell.: it was very bad before going to sleep at midnight, but had disappeared when he was called up at 2 a. m.; it came on again 21st day, but had gone when he woke on 22nd d. On this last day pain in right great toe at noon; heat in left hand, fingers, and ear, 10 a. m. 24th day – Pain over eyes, radiating from right supra – orbital region; restless n. 25th-d. Headache, with pressure in upper part of orbits; pain in both calves, after bathing; many uneasy sensations during day; feverish heat at 9 a. m. 26th day – In m. great pain in lower part of right calf, moving to tendo Achillis by 8 a. m., and changing to left sole at 4 p. m.; at 7 it was scarcely felt (on waking had felt a keen stinging stitching pain at end of left toe, lasting a few m.); small painful swelling at lower corner of left ear, which was less painful next day, and harder on 28th day 29th day – Two very large stools, after first frequent colicky pains and distressing sense of fulness in bowels. 30th day – Very weak in lower extremities, p. m.; more so (with great drowsiness) on 31st, and weakness still felt on 33rd (when, however, mental condition was one of satisfaction and hilarity) and 34th day – on latter also chilliness in e. On 39th day burning sensation in rectum returned, and there was pain in left foot. On 41st day felt weary and completely broken down in lower extremities. On 50th day he notes: – ” The only symptom that has troubled me for some day past is the sensation of going to have a stool every evening ” From 29th day stools were large and soft, and inclined to be loose.

3 b. Four weeks after last dose W. took 2 doses of 5 dr. of a strong tinct. Next day there came on most excruciating pains in right arm, as if in marrow; ” location of pain changes in whole length of arm, from shoulder down to finger ends; ” hand several times felt as if paralysed, so that he could hardly hold a pen; pain at times so distressing as to make him almost frantic. At same time pain in right great toe, also (at 6 p. m.), less severe, in and around right fibula; at 9 p. m. pain left toe, but came on in right hand, especially in metacarpal bone near little finger. Nothing more is said of these pains till 5th day (the above being counted as 2nd), when there is recorded – ” At 1 a. m., in bed, pain in lower part of right arm unbearable; hand feels so weak I can hardly use it to grasp anything; took bryon., and fell asleep about 2:30; at 4 woke with exactly the same symptoms, when bry. was repeated with like result. On getting up at 6 pain returned in full strength; at 8 I took rhus, in about an hours after which all pain in arm and hand had ceased, though that in right great toe continued pretty bad, and only wore off gradually. ” Besides above, there was on ” 2nd day ” a second stool, p. m., natural in character, but enormous in size; and at 5:30 p. m., pain deep in left eye, as if eyeball would be pressed out, – it had ceased by 6. Richard Hughes
Dr. Richard Hughes (1836-1902) was born in London, England. He received the title of M.R.C.S. (Eng.), in 1857 and L.R.C.P. (Edin.) in 1860. The title of M.D. was conferred upon him by the American College a few years later.

Hughes was a great writer and a scholar. He actively cooperated with Dr. T.F. Allen to compile his 'Encyclopedia' and rendered immeasurable aid to Dr. Dudgeon in translating Hahnemann's 'Materia Medica Pura' into English. In 1889 he was appointed an Editor of the 'British Homoeopathic Journal' and continued in that capacity until his demise. In 1876, Dr. Hughes was appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Organization of the International Congress of Homoeopathy Physicians in Philadelphia. He also presided over the International Congress in London.
