Fever

CHILLINESS. Chilliness, as in the on set of coryza. Chilliness immediately after the sensation of the pains. Chilliness, after eating. Chilliness on every motion, even in bed (1st days). Chilliness for two hours, without thirst, with confusion of the head, while riding over a stony road. At first chilliness, followed by heat of the face (after 2 days). Chilliness and sensation of coldness, in the morning, in bed, followed after a quarter of an hour by heat; again chilliness after a few hours, though without subsequent heat. Chilliness, in the forenoon; hot hands in the evening. In the evening, chilliness and heat alternately, followed by sweat during the night (3rd day). Chilliness, in the evening at 9 o’ clock, disappearing after lying down, and not followed by heat or thirst (1st day). Constant chilliness, with great thirst and internal heat, with heat of the hands, and aversion to all food (after 14 days). Before menstruation, much chilliness, trembling of the limbs, and spasmodic sensation in the abdomen. Great chilliness, as in fever, without thirst; several evenings. Great chilliness, especially after eating, and towards evening. Internal chilliness at noon, with heat of the hands and subsequent heat over the body, though all without thirst. Constant internal chilliness for four days, without heat or thirst, with icy cold feet, confusion of the head, general prostration, amounting to faintness; with swelling of the lower jaw and gum, and burning toothache, with stitches (after 32 days). Chilly and shivery, in the evening before lying down. Excessive febrile chill, towards evening, lasting several minutes; he is obliged to lie down; followed by nausea, vomiting, and cramp like pain in the chest the whole night, with short breath, much internal anxiety and much perspiration on the head (6th day). Daily at 6 p. m. first febrile chill for an hour, with thirst; then heat, without thirst, with profuse fluent coryza; followed by slight perspiration during a natural sleep; on the subsequent morning scraping in the throat, bad taste in the mouth, loss of appetite, and agglutination of the left eye. Frequent shivering in the room, without subsequent heat. Frequent shivering, with yawning, relieved by the warmth of the stove, in the forenoon (1st day). Chilliness on the head. Chilliness on the crown of the head and over the whole body, in the evening (after 12 days). After the menses, in the evening, coldness of the back, and after midnight, waking with cramp and coldness in the stomach, which last still towards noon (19th day). Cold hands. Cold feet, in bed. Cold feet, with heat of the face. Shivering in the back, in the morning, in bed. HEAT. Increased warmth, at night, with violent pains in the zygoma. Heat, in the evening, in bed, without subsequent perspiration. First heat, and burning in the eyes like fever (at an open window), immediately followed by chilliness in the open air, in the afternoon. Sleep at night interrupted by heat of the whole body, especially of the hands, and by very vivid dreams. After taking cold in a draft of air, she becomes heated for a moment in the room, followed by heaviness of the limbs, tearing in the whole body and in the head, with roaring in the ears and general coldness, during the following night with sour-smelling perspiration (after 31 days). Much heat, great thirst, and restless night, before menstruation. Internal and external heat, towards morning, without thirst (2nd day). Dry heat over the whole body, in the evening. Febrile heat every morning about 9 o’ clock, and in the afternoon about 5, lasting from one-half to one hour, with deep yawning, excessive thirst, headache, and pulsation in the abdomen. He is attacked with fever in the evening after taking cold; towards morning perspiration, with violent headache, and after rising confusion of the head. Febrile paroxysm, after becoming chilled in a cold bed, with burning headache, heat in the face, and violent, scarcely endurable shivering over the whole body; there breaks out such violent stopped catarrh that he can scarcely get any breath, with perspiration for three days (after 38 days). Orgasm in the blood, and heat in the head. Orgasm in the blood, in the evening, before going to sleep, with oppression and tightness in the chest. Heat and redness of the face in the morning in bed. Long- continuing redness and heat in the face, with icy coldness of the feet. Very hot hands in the evening in bed, with momentary shuddering, and long hindered falling asleep. Dry heat of the cheeks and hands, with short breath. SWEAT. Sweat in the morning in bed. Night-sweat (first 3 nights, after 2 hours, and 6 days); (after 4 days). Profuse sweat, while walking. Abundant warm sweat, with much heat, from midnight to 3 a. m. Perspires very easily during the day. Perspiration over the whole body, in the morning in bed (6th day). Profuse perspiration on every mental exertion, while reading, writing etc. Sweat on the soles of the feet. Profuse sweat on the feet, for several days. Perspiration on the head, neck, and upper part of the body, during sleep. Perspiration on the perineum, at night. Perspiration in the axilla. Fever on the next day, with general shivering, violent chill in the limbs. Skin hot and dry (third day). Cold sweat over the whole body.

Skin

ERUPTIONS, DRY. Papulous eruptions here and there, even on the face. Nettle- rash for 14 days. Nettle-rash with such a violent itching that she did not know whom to bear it, lasting 15 days. A large yellow scaly spot on the upper part of the forehead. Yellow, scaly, violently itching spots over the whole abdomen, also about the nipples, becoming moist after scratching. Red elevated lentil- shaped spot above the wrist. Freckles in the face. Scurf upon the upper lip. Skin of the whole face dry and rough. Skin of the hands rough and cracked. Lips cracked, scaly. A crack in the cicatrix of an issue. Scaling of the lower lip (34th day). The lower lip becomes scaly, cracked. Eruption in the hollow of the knee. Itching in the flesh of the right breast with a fine eruption, which however only shows itself on rubbing. Eruption of pimples in the left eyebrow. Eruption of pimples on the ears. Pimples on the face constantly. Pimples appears and disappears on the face. Pimples on zygomata, with burning pain. Pimples on the lips with biting itching. Pimples on the shoulders with itching and burning after scratching. Pimples painful to touch above the upper lip, near the left nostril (36th day). Pimple in the skin of the forepart of the cheek below the ear, without pain. A pimple above the knee, with pressive tearing pain. Two pimples on the left thigh. Burning biting pimples on the pudenda. Itching of the arms with white pimples like millet seeds after scratching. Itching pimples in the nape of the neck in the evening, disappearing after 24 hours. Itching pimples on the posterior portion of the left thumb which after scratching still continue to itch. Papulous eruption upon the nose. Papulous eruption on the face. Papulous eruption high up on the upper arm which itches and pains. Great itching on the mons veneris, and about the genitals and on the thighs with fine red papulous eruptions. ERUPTIONS, MOIST. Vesicles on the lips. Vesicles on the red of the lower lip; they are painful to touch and itch. Vesicle upon the little finger. Vesicle on the left index- finger, which for several days after opening discharges watery not purulent substance. Itching pimple and three vesicles with inflamed areola on the tibia. Itching vesicle in the palm on the hand. Small pointed, itching and moist pimples on both lips and all around the mouth. ERUPTIONS, PUSTULAR. Pimples tipped with pus on the face. Large red pimples on the left frontal eminence, painful to touch, they afterwards suppurate (32nd day). A small red pustule in the middle of the forehead, disappearing the next morning. Tatter on the legs. A small superficial ulcer above the left wing on the nose, painful when touched. Ulcerative pimple by the anus, with Stitches. An itching place on the thigh, near the hip, which after scratching ulcerates. The ulcer bleeds very much, almost without cause. Profuse bleeding of an ulcer at night. SUBJECTIVE. Burning in various places on the skin, even under the axillae, as from a mustard plaster. Sticking and gnawing in the skin over the whole body. After going to bed at 11 p. m. she was unable to sleep on account of violent itching sticking over the whole body, she slept only from 11 to 1 p. m. Itching over the whole body, in the evening before going to sleep, disappearing in bed. Itching here and there over the whole body, especially the lower legs; on scratching it easily becomes bloody. Itching over the body, now here, now there, with small pimples after scratching. Violent itching over the whole body, in the morning and evening especially on the back where small pimples appeared (after 3 days). Violent, almost sticking itching over the whole body at night in bed. During the menses, violent itching over the whole body. Burning itching over the whole body, on the face, hands, tibia, etc. now here, now there. Burning itching in the face. Pressure and tension in the location of a former ulcer (on the lower leg).. Tickling crawling in the toes and soles. Itching in the lobules of the ears. Itching in the skin on the face, preceded by twitching; is obliged to rub it, after which it burns like fire. An old wart on the face begins to itch. Itching about the margins on the lips. Itching on the chin. Itching externally on the pit of the stomach, not relieved by scratching. Itching about the umbilicus. Itching of the lower abdomen for several days (after 10 days). Itching on the scrotum. Itching on the back, which amounts to a pain after scratching. Itching on the lower part of the small of the back. Itching in the axillae. Itching on the wrist. Itching above the right wrist, disappearing on scratching. Itching between the nates. Itching on the knee. Itching on the tibia. Itching on the under surfaces of the toes. Inability to fall asleep on account of itching on the scrotum. Severe itching on the abdomen and thighs. Violent itching in the palms, near the fingers, in the evening (1st day). Violent itching on the lower legs, in the evening. Violent itching about the ankle in the morning in bed. Violent itching and heat in the feet in the evening, as if they had been frozen. Violent itching on the great toe, beneath the nail, with pain when touched. Burning itching in the face, on the back and head. Burning itching on the perineum at night. Burning itching of the pudenda. Burning itching on the sacrum and under the right patella.

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
In 1881 Allen published A Critical Revision of the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica.
