Neck and Back.

Neck. Dull pain in the back of the neck, with feeling of constriction (twenty fifth day). Soreness of the cervical and occipital muscles, always worse when she has “thirsty spells” during the whole proving. Back. Pain in the back and nausea (tenth day). Pain in back all the evening, till after midnight, when it abated somewhat (thirteenth day). Severe pain in back (third day). Constant burning in the back (sixty-ninth day). Some backache and pain in right ovary (twenty-eighth day). Dorsal. Some pain between shoulders (second day). Dull pain under right scapula, being weary from attending lectures; have felt it before when tired. Pain in lower dorsal vertebrae, as if the back would break, for two days (after nearly three months). Lumbar. Steady, though not severe pain in lumbar region after nine hours and a quarter, first night); continuing though sensibly growing lighter; occasional transfer of pain to between shoulders (second morning). Pain in lumbar region increasing in severity (after dose, second day); much distressed with pain in lumbar region, on rising in the morning, lasting through the day and not disappearing till evening (third day). Sharp pain in the lumbar region, extending thence over the right hip to the umbilical region, relieved temporarily by rubbing (eighth, ninth, and tenth nights). Gnawing pain in back, in the lumbar region, lasting all night, worse in bed (fourth and fifth night). On changing position in bed, drawing pain in the right side of the loins, near the hip, increased after rising up (fifteenth day). Pain in the lower part of the back (sixth day). Constant dull pain low down in the backbone between the hips. Dull and constant pain in the back, between the hips, with pressing downwards at the anus; continuing to tenth day, not much relieved by lying down (sixth day). Pain in small of the back. Dull heavy pain and great weakness in the small of the back and loins, continuing four following days (after twenty-four days). Steady pain in the small of the back, in the spine, spreading both ways to the kidneys, continuing the whole day (seventh day). Dull pain in small of back and sacrum, all the afternoon and evening (twelfth day). Dull and occasional shooting pains across the small of the back, lasting a short time (after second dose, first day). Sacral. Pain in sacrum all day (eleventh day). Pain in the lower part of the sacrum (fifth day). Pain in the sacrum, with a sensation of weight and downward pressure in lower part of abdomen (hypogastrium), which continued with a good deal of severity for six days, worse when standing (after eighteen days). Dull pain low down in the back, in the sacrum (fifth day). Drawing pains in the sacrum aggravated by moving; in the morning (thirteenth day). Aching and pressure across the lumbo-sacral region, and some pressure upon the rectum (twentieth day). From the very tip of the os coccyges a pulling upwards and forwards (twenty-fifth day).

Extremities in General.

Severe pain in the second joints of fingers and in the ankle- joint, so that when driving the horse must be stopped, the jolting was so painful (seventeen days after 12 drops). In early part of night, an out pressing sensation in hands, arms, feet, and legs (first to eighth day). Quick pain in the ring fingers of both hands and corresponding toes of both feet, at the same time, passing off in a few seconds (after third dose, first day).

Superior Extremities.

Shoulder. Crampy pain in left shoulder and mammae. Arm. Tearing pain in the left upper arm which seemed to be confined to the muscles (ninth day). Forearm. Pressing pain in the right arm and wrist (twenty- fifth day). Wrist. Pain (a hard ache) in the right wrist, and great weakness of the part in the morning (twelfth day). Hand. Tremor of the hands (third day). Hands and arms stiff and hot as if parched (thirty-first day). Right hand and arm stiff and painful, abating after 8 A.M. (sixteenth day). Pricking, painful sensation in the hands and fingers, in the morning (twelfth day). Fingers. Paralysis or stiffness of the fingers, so that she can hardly hold a pencil firmly enough to write (fourth day). Fingers of right hand feel stiff, with cramp in the middle finger and up to the arm, at 5 P. M. (thirtieth day). Cramps in the fingers (twenty-fifth day). Pain in the index finger, beginning at the point, like that produced by an electric current, with throbbing of the pulse (after eight hours, twenty-first day). A sensation as of an electric current, beginning at the end of the left index finger, extended to the other fingers of the same hand and up the arm, at 5 P. M.; then in the right index finger, extending to the other fingers, to the hand and arm, continuing for several hours, with coldness of the feet during the time (twenty-eighth day); the sensation as of an electric current has been felt in the left had occasionally, but has grown less and less at every recurrence; this, together with the burning of the feet and hands, subsided first (after two months). Pricking sensation in the fingers of both hands, extending up the arms, with a strong out pressing sensation as if the blood would press through the veins, which continued into the night (after seven hours, twenty-ninth day). Pricking sensation at the ends of the fingers of both hands, and great heat of the palms, at 5 P. M. (thirtieth day).

Inferior Extremities.

Staggering gait; have to exert myself to the utmost to walk straight (seventh day). Lassitude in the lower extremities, especially in the fleshy parts (seventh day). Legs weak, and feel as if unable to support the body (fifteenth day). Great weakness in the legs (thirtieth day). When walking, the joints seem to lack synovial fluid; can almost hear the crepitus (third day). Quick pains in the lower limbs (soon after first dose, second day). Hip. Pain in the right hip and down the thigh (after six hours, twenty-third day). Catching pains through the right hip, and down on the outside of the right thigh, worse when sitting up (twenty second night). Boring sensation in the right hip-joint, with stiff feeling of the muscles of the thigh (twenty-seventh day). Severe, drawing pain in the right hip, extending down the outside of the thigh, relieved by moving the limb from place to place (seventeenth day). Stitches coming and going through the day in right hip- joint (seventeenth day). Slight stitches occasionally in the right hip joint (seventh day). Soreness in the right hip- joint, worse when she has “thirsty spells,” during the whole proving. Thigh. Lassitude in the thighs (eighth day). Pain in left thigh, flatulency and lameness in ankle- joints when moving, gradually diminishing (third day). A small spot, about the size of the end of the finger, on the inner side of the left thigh, about half way down to the knee, very painful at times, coming and going (soon after first dose, second day). Sharp pain in the inside of the left thigh, over the femoral artery, about two inches below Poupart`s ligament (six hours and a quarter after second dose, second day). Much trembling sensation from the pelvis extending down the thighs (sixty-ninth day). Knees. Trembling of the knees (second day). Trembling of the knees and abdomen, and lower part of the back (third day). Weakness and pain in the knees, when walking (soon after first dose, second day). Knees feel weak, and are painful when walking, and especially when ascending an eminence (soon after first dose, second day). Pain in the knees all day (second day). Grasping pain in the knees, continuing for some time (after eight hours, twenty-first day). Knees ache (tenth day). Heavy aching sensation in both knees, after lying down (twenty-second night). Sharp pain in both knees, on the inside, extending towards the front, at the point of connection of the patella with the tendon of the rectus muscle; the pain seemed to be confined to a small spot; never felt anything like it before (after first dose, first day). Stinging sensation below the right knee, at 5 P. M. (thirtieth day). Leg. Pains in the lower limbs, below the knees, shifting suddenly from place to place (after second dose, first day). Dull, heavy pain from the knees to the ends of the toes. Cramps in both legs and feet after the discharge from the bowels in the morning (thirty-second day). The legs ache, causing her to twist and turn (twenty-sixth day). Swiftly darting pain about the legs for two hours during the evening, going off suddenly as they came on (thirtieth day). Ankle. Pain in the ankle, extending to the toes (twenty-seventh day). Pain in ankle-joints, worse when moving (after second dose, second day). Foot. Dull, boring pain on the top of the left foot (soon after first dose, second day). Pulsation in both feet (after second dose, first day). Feet have been tender and the ankles swell (forty-fourth day). Cramp in the toes of the left foot, at 5 P. M. (thirtieth day).

General Symptoms

Objective. During the proving she has grown fat, gaining eight pounds (forty-fourth day). Extreme emaciation and debility. More active; things went easily first days). Tremulousness (fourteenth day). Nervous tremulousness, towards evening (one hour after second dose, second day). Tremulous and weak as from a fit of sickness, on waking (second morning after 12 drops). Startings (third day). Convulsive contractions of almost all the muscles of the body. Hysterics. The muscles of the whole body respond sluggishly to her will (forty-fourth day). Enervation. Lassitude. General lassitude (twenty- ninth day). General lassitude and great heat, in the afternoon (sixteenth day). Languor; lassitude (twelfth day). Great languor, for three days (after six days). Languid, slow, and forgetful (thirty-third to forty-fourth day). Languid, rather sleepy (after nine hours). Dull, sleepy, and languid (after four hours). Weakness and irritability during the forenoon (twenty fourth day). Loss of strength, with weakness and trembling of the bowels (after forty-third day). Extreme exhaustion, following the diarrhoea. Prostration. Frequent faintness, especially in a warm room, or after being on the feet a long time,; with cold perspiration on back of hands and on feet (after forty-three days). Restless (thirty-first day). Restless, with a desire to do something, but no ambition (seventh day). Restless, weary feeling (sixth day). General restlessness of whole system, at 5 P. M. (after nine hours, eighth day); increasing in the evening and after going to bed (eighth day). Felt hurried; walked all day; could not amuse herself by thinking or reading; it was aimless hurry and motion, up and down; could not go to sleep; wanted somebody to be with her and talk to her; felt that she should die, and did not care if she did; wondered who would take care of her body (sixty-first day); same restless desire to keep walking (seventy-fifth day). want to sit quiet; is restless, yet don`t want to walk; is cross and pettish (fortieth day). Much nervousness (third day). Subjective. She is conscious of feeling nervous and irritable, and yet says she feels jolly (twenty- second day). Nervous symptoms, commencing after nine hours each day, not very strongly marked the first day, but growing worse and worse each day (after the first five doses). Irritability of the whole system (eleventh night). The prover feels that her whole system is profoundly affected by the drug; “she is not the person she once was;” feels hurried and yet cannot do much; no heart nor strength for business, which has not hitherto been a burden to her; does not like trying to do any work (thirtieth day). She feels that the animal life predominates, and as though her life were going away (sixty-ninth day). Feeling of great prostration (after six hours, twenty-third day). Felt for a week entirely incapacitated for mental or physical exertion. Faint feeling all over, very severe for about two hours, then gradually subsiding, in the afternoon (twenty- fourth day). Was called out in the night, and, after lying down again, was miserable and restless; everything seemed too hot (seventh day). Severe pain all night (seventeen days after 12 drops). Sensation of burning, both internally and externally (fourteenth day). Aching of the flesh and bones throughout the body (seventh and ninth days after 12 drops). Muscles lame as though bruised, and the soles of the feet so sore that she cannot walk on them; the hands feel as though they had been pounded; every part of the body sore and bruised; can`t bear pressure of the clothes (eighteen days after 12 drops); the train of symptoms did not leave her for nearly four weeks. No pain, but the sore sensation which follows pain, in the morning (twenty-seventh day). Pulsation of all the arteries (twentieth and twenty-second nights). Throbbing pulsations over the body, and out pressing sensation in the hands and arms, as though the blood would burst though the veins, in the afternoon (sixteenth day). The pains all occupy small spots, as if produced by hard pressure with the ends of the fingers on the parts (after second dose, first day). The symptoms gradually increased in severity, with but little variation up to the forty-eighth day, when internal use of Helonias dioica gave relief in the course of twenty-four hours, and in three days the relief was entire.
