Trembling of both arms and hands, in the evening (thirty- eighth day). Trembling sensation in the right arm, with the irritable mood (twenty-ninth day).

Pain in the muscles of the left upper arm, on moving it or lifting, as if badly bruised; very sore; feels stiff as from a blow or wound when resting it (thirtieth day); quite gone about midday, but came in the right arm, in the same position as in the left (thirty-first day). Pain in muscles of the right arm, chiefly below the elbow (after four hours, fourteenth day). Pain in the deltoid muscle of the left arm (after four hours, fourteenth day). Elbow and Forearm. In the evening, on lying down, sudden boring rheumatic pains in the carpal bones of the left hand; then shifting to the right ditto, then down to right tarsal, then to left ditto; these pains continued shifting in rapid succession for several hours; on getting up and walking about the room the pains would all disappear (fifth day). Feeling as if the least pressure with fingers would sprain them (fifth day). Feeling as if the least pressure with fingers would sprain them (sixth day). Inferior Extremities.

Stiffness in left knee and a pain on stooping; could hardly rise again (twenty-fourth day); knee symptoms continued ever since, but not quite so bad to-day (twenty-seventh day); pain in the left knee, when walking or stooping (twenty-eighth day); pain in the knee still when moving it (twenty-ninth day). Five years ago, I severely sprained it in jumping, which lamed me for several weeks, but have not felt anything of it until now; the pain now is just as it was then, and I know of the no other cause for it; I believe the medicine is trying it. Left leg still painful when stooping (thirty-second day); rather worse (thirty-third day); rather easier; on stretching the left leg, the stiffness in center of hollow of knee is like stretching a cord; great pain in knee on stooping; cannot squat with left leg, it being so stiff, and when stooping a little, have no strength to get up with it; leg worse in the evening (thirty-fifth day); leg better after sleeping and resting it (thirty-sixth day) better but very stiff (thirty-seventh day); not so painful (thirty-eighth day); better, but painful when stretched (thirty-ninth day); very stiff on bending, and almost powerless to rise (forty-first day); still stiff, can bend it better after a night’s rest; much worse, cannot use it without very considerable pain; have walked to-day about two miles; after sitting down, it was intensely painful on rising; slightly better on moving about (forty-third day); leg getting quite useless, obliged to rest it, and put my hand to help move it (forty-fourth day); very stiff, feels as if it had been dislocated at knee; cannot bend it without pain (forty-fifth day); the pain has been sometimes better, and sometimes very painful for the last three or four days (forty-ninth day); leg still very weak and painful, unable to walk fast or run; pain under left ham on stretching the leg (fifty-third day); leg better but stiff, with at times slight pain (sixty-first day); left leg still very weak (seventy-sixth day). Thigh. Bruised sensation on the top of both thighs, when walking, as if from over-walking, passing off on walking fast; difficulty at first in doing so (twenty-fourth day). Drawing pain in the posterior muscles of the right thigh, with tenderness on pressure (tenth day). A sharp, shooting pain, passing from the trochanter major of the right leg into the hip-joint (eighteenth day). Knee.

Boring pain in the right knee (tenth day). Pain in right knee- joint and in right side, at irregular intervals, in the evening (fifteenth day). A dull, aching pain in the left knee, at the superior outer angle of the patella, extending beneath it (eighth day). 3 P.M., a sharp, darting pain at the inner upper angle of the right patella (eighteenth day). Leg and Ankle. Painful soreness of the left leg below the knee, as if it had been strained (fourteenth day). Dull pain n left ankle, relieved by motion (tenth day). Tearing pain in the right ankle, came on while walking (tenth day). Foot and Toes. Contractive pain in the tendo Achillis of the left foot, relieved by motion (seventh day). Pains in the dorsal surface of the feet (after five hours, fourteenth day). Pains in the dorsal and plantar surfaces of the feet, at 4 P.M. (sixteenth day). A sharp darting pain at the end of the left beg toe (eighteenth day). (Transient rheumatic pain in dorsum of left big toe, and finally shifting to left ankle), (tenth day). Considerable pain in old bunion (thirty-eighth day).

Generalities

Disposition to stretch, with the chilliness (after seven hours, sixth day). Dull and sleepy (forty-fourth day). At 4 P.M., felt dull and stupid, with an inclination to stretch and yawn frequently, accompanied with an oppression of the chest and aversion to mental or physical exercise; these symptoms were relieved by walking in the open air (sixteenth day). Great restlessness and inquietude (third day). Impossible to keep quiet in any position one minute; whilst seated would constantly change position, particularly the lower extremities, which became numb, tremulous, and painful when quiet, and pass off on changing positions (tenth day). Great weariness and desire to lie down (twelfth day). Almost irresistible desire to lie in bed from general depression and weariness (fourth day). Unwilling to get up, in the morning (seventeenth day). Feeling of great prostration, with a meditative mood or internal reverie, and unable to associate my mind with any external object (eleventh day). Painful weariness and prostration, especially in the loins and lower extremities, all day and night (third day). Feeling of weakness (fourth day). Weakness (seventeenth day). Feeling of weakness and faintness, after use of bowels (fifteenth day). At present I am in a very weak state; my muscular strength, which was very great (being able to work at the most difficult gymnastics exercises for hours together, without fatigue, and to lift with either arm upright, over my head, many times in succession, a fifty-six pound weight), has almost entirely left, me and all my endurance seems gone (after six weeks). Felt languid and uneasy through the day (second day). Faint and tremulous feeling, particularly on the least exercise (ninth day). Faint and tremulous feeling, with nausea (tenth day).

Sinking faint feeling, after a meal (thirty-fifth and thirty- sixth days). Very unwell night, and are on the left side, extending backward to the body or head; but after some days they are continued through the entire day, affect both sides of the body, and do not extend backward constantly, but often across, from one side to the other, as in the head, from one temple to the other. Transient shifting pain on the right side, commencing at the wrist, then to shoulder, knee, and along the tibia to the ankle, relieved by motion (eighth day). Fugitive pains through the left side (third day). A dull darting pain in the right side, from within out (eighth day). A sharp darting pain in the left side, several times during the day, then in the right side; at one time a very sharp darting passed up the right side, sometimes extending to the right shoulder, then to the right side, then spread over the upper part of the back; these pains continued for a long time (twenty- seventh day). Erratic pain in different parts of the body and head (third day). Erratic pains in the limbs, chest, and head, with the chilliness (after seven hours, sixth day). Shooting pains in various parts of the body, sometimes in the chest, sometimes in the hypochondria, limbs, etc.; at times in the joints, at others seemingly in the muscles; always passing off quickly (ninth day). Vague pains in different parts of the body (twelfth day); pains still continue, but with diminished intensity (thirteenth day). Pain in right side and right knee-joint, at irregular intervals, in the evening (fifteenth day). At 10 o’clock, pains in the limbs, side, hypochondria, and abdominal muscles manifest themselves and continue in a great or less degree during the afternoon and evening; also pains in the head, right side, parietal regions; in addition to the sticking pains mentioned, which seem to be in the muscles and ligaments of the joints, pricking or stinging pains in the skin of different parts of the body and limbs; these pains are sometimes of a pricking character, as if produced by extremely fine needles; at others, attended with a burning sensation, as if from nettles, never appearing in different parts simultaneously, but always confined to one spot at a time; they manifest themselves chiefly in the afternoon and evening, and almost exclusively while sitting in a warm room; are seldom felt during exercise in the open air (sixteenth day). The sticking or boring rheumatic pains are felt less to-day, occasionally in the limbs (seventeenth day). The pricking or stinging pains in the integuments predominate; to-day they are felt in the limbs, on the chest, head, face; sometimes in the lips and in the eyes (seventeenth day). (The rheumatic sticking or boring pains in the limbs, hypochondria, and other parts, have almost entirely ceased, or give place to the pricking or stinging pains in the integuments), (nineteenth day). After taking tea, in the evening, all the pains subsided, but came on again slightly just before going to bed (sixteenth day). After sleeping about two hours, in the afternoon, all the symptoms were somewhat better (seventh day). The symptoms all disappeared after eating peppermint candy, in the afternoon (eighty day). All the symptoms are worse while sitting, and pass off while moving. Thinks the symptoms return every four weeks, and continue about six days, and then remit.
