Hearing.

(Increased sensitiveness of hearing).

Very sensitive to loud tones, he starts every time.

Remarkable roaring in the ears, and at the same time flickering before the eyes, especially the left, so that he was obliged to rub them frequently, with twitching of the left upper lid (after five minutes).

First, a din as of trumpets and kettledrums in the ears, and as of the rushing of wind, immediately; afterwards a humming and buzzing, worse when sitting, better when standing and lying, still better when walking.

Nose

Objective and Discharges.

Tip of the nose red, swollen, and shining.

Sudden redness in the tip of the nose, with a burning sensation.

Redness of the Schneiderian membrane.

(Very cold nose), (Case 12). (*Continuing during seven days of mania*).

Ulcers, crusts, and fissures in the nostrils and at the border of the nose.

The mucus in the nostrils dried to crusts.

The boy often bores his nose.

Frequent sneezing.

Paroxysms of sneezing.

Frequent dry sneezing, with tickling, especially in the left nostril.

Coryza, with discharge of clear and whitish mucus.

Fluent coryza, on one side of the nose, and from one nostril only.

Coryza with offensive smell in the nose, as if of herring-pickle, especially when blowing the nose.

Now stuffing in the nose, now water flows from it.

Left nostril somewhat moist, followed by sneezing and collection of mucus in the nose, throat, and air-passages (third day).

The right nostril somewhat stopped, followed by sneezing, and afterwards a slight coryza.

Mucus mixed with blood blown.

Discharge of clotted blood when blowing the nose.

Bleeding of the nose immediately, the whole night, early in the morning.

Hemorrhage through the nose and mouth (when throwing up the berries, from the operation of an emetic).

Very frequent epistaxis, with pulsative pains in the head, especially at night when in bed, and on waking in the morning.

Sensations

Dryness of the nose and lips, the latter very red.

Dryness of nasal cavity, with dull frontal headache.

Dryness of the Schneiderian membrane, and of the eyes, with a burning sensation in the, and in the lids. Dryness and obstruction of the nose, for several weeks.

Sensation of dryness of the Schneiderian membrane (after one hour).

The left nostril is very painful and closed up by matter in the morning.

Sensation as if the nose were full of blood, and on the point of bleeding.

Cramp at the root of the nose.

Drawing pains in the nose, with sensation as if it was turned up towards the forehead.

Painful drawing over the left half of the nose.

Pressing pain in the bones of the nose.

Pressure, stitches, and pulsations in the nose.

Fine stitches in the tip of the nose, the whole night, beginning in the evening.

Fine shootings below the nose (after half an hour).

Bruised pain in the bones and cartilages of the nose.

Above the wing of the nose, pain as if bruised on touching the part.

Smell.

Great sensitiveness of smell; the faintest odor, especially that of tobacco, is unbearable.

Olfaction too sensitive; the smell of tobacco and soot is intolerable to him (after one hour).

Camphor is loathsome.

Olfactory organs insensible to the strongest stimulants (after six hours).

Bread smells, and tastes sour.

Smell like rotten eggs before the nose for a quarter of an our (after four hours).

The expression of the face is stupid astonishment, the eye is lifeless (after ten hours).

Extremely haggard face, expressive of uneasiness and anxiety.

The face is sunken, and covered with a cold clammy sweat.

The features are disfigured, and on expiration the boy puffs as if hot.

Countenance pale.

Paleness of the face.

Sudden paleness of the face, lasting some time), (Case 16). (*Such sudden pallor is not uncommon in epileptics*).

Paleness of the face, with increased appetite, (Case 5).

Paleness of the face, with thirst, (Case 5). (*Not found*).

The child was pale, cold, and as if in a fainting condition.

Pale, yellow, earthy complexion.

Jaundiced complexion.

The habitual coppery face of the old man became violent, and the conjunctiva bulbi was blood.

Bluish redness of face.

Bluish-red face, with great heat of the body, every evening.

The pale face becomes suddenly red.

Scarlet redness of the face and chest during sleep.

The face was very red, with a staring look.

Face red; eyes shining, and seem to be swimming in tears (after two and a half hours).

Very red face, with general warmth and great restlessness, this, however, was soon followed by paleness of the face and lassitude.

Redness and heat of the face, with great thirst, (Case 14).

Very red, hot face, with icy coldness of the limbs.

Face red and hot, and face, neck, and chest much swollen.

Great redness and heat in the face, without sweat (after twenty- four to thirty hours).

The face was red and turgid.

The face of a usually pale and lean man is uncommonly red and swollen; the heat is general and strong, the pulse full and rapid, with excessive sweat (after half an hour).

Red spots like scarlatina, and purple blotches like bruises on the face.

There appeared on the face, especially on the left cheek, along with increased heat, red irregular patches of the size of a crown piece, which disappeared and again returned.

Dark-red spots in his face, resembling the rash of scarlet fever; with full pulse.

The skin of the face is thickened as if an eruption would break out.

Swollen face.

Spasms in the face.

Spasmodic action of the muscles of the face.

Alternating contortion of the muscles of the face.

Convulsions of the facial muscles, with ridiculous motions of every description.

Convulsive motion of the muscles of the left side of the face, especially of the left corner of the mouth.

Convulsive movement of the facial muscles, with distortion of the mouth.

Distorted features.

The face is disfigured by convulsions and swelling.

She distorts the facial muscles horribly, sticks the tongue far out, clucks with the tongue, and retches even to vomiting, by paroxysms, (Case 13).

Twitchings of face and hands (after half an hour).

The muscles of his face, jaws, and limbs were agitated by convulsive twitchings (from the leaves).

Convulsive play of the facial muscles, with grinding of the teeth, and at times stretching and extending of the limbs.
