Pneumonia



Cough: Cough at night on lying down and in the morning on rising. Cough after drinking, in cold, open air. Cough worse 1-3 a.m. Cough with bloody sputa. Cough worse about midday and midnight. Cough lying on back.

Respiration: Frequent oppressive shortness of breath in every position of body causing anxiety. Fast breathing when lying on back.

Wheezing respiration. Unable to lie down, fears suffocation; oppressed anxious, short.

Pains: Darting pain through upper third of right lung. Heat, burning, itching in the chest. Stitches and pressing in the sternum. Stitches in upper right chest; in left chest only during inspiration. Chilliness in chest, constriction in chest, tightness of chest.

Pulse: Pulse frequent in the morning, slower in the evening. Pulse small, contracted, frequent, weak, tremulous, intermittent.

Fever: Fever worse in the noon (1-2) and in the midnight (1-2 a.m.) with extreme weakness and burning of eyes and great thirst, drinking often but little at a time. Great restlessness, anxiety, desire for acids and acid drinks. Face pale, sunken, anxious.

Patient: Old people, asthmatic persons.

Conditions: Danger of paralysis of lungs. Threatened gangrene. Ichorous, fetid or dingy, green expectoration. Desperate cases (carb. v.). Restlessness, weakness, thirst, better from warmth, worse 1 to 3 a.m. Generally required after Rhus tox. Hoarse after midnight.

Accompaniments: Anxiety, restlessness, fear of death, despair. Thinks it useless to take medicine. Headache better by cold application. Burning in eyes and acrid lachrymation. Photophobia, expression of agony on face. Lips black, livid, bloody saliva. Puffiness around eyes. Lips black, dry, cracked. Tongue dry, brown, black, cracked. Tongue dry, clear, red. Desire for cold water. Vomiting of black water. Diarrhoea after eating and drinking, worse noon and midnight. Stool putrid, black, white, yellow, Burning in chest, craves milk. Attacks of pains with chilliness.

Aggravation: 1-2 p.m. 1-2 a.m.: cold.

Amelioration: Heat. Lying with head low.

CARBO VEG.

Type: Lobar pneumonia, pleurisy, neglected pneumonia.

Stages: Third stage, second stage, collapse.

Location: Right chest, upper right chest, lower part of right chest, left lung, left middle chest.

Causes: Alcohol, debauchery, change of weather, warm damp weather, overheating, living in damp dwellings.

Expectoration: Profuse, yellow, fetid. Tough and greenish; yellow pus. Yellow-green or purulent brown; bloody; slimy, tenacious, whitish or watery mucus. Sour or salty. Offensive in masses. Yellow purulent matter and tubercles. Expectoration in the morning; none in evening. Expectoration of dirty yellow color and smelling badly (neglected pneumonia). “Yellow like pus, brownish bloody, tasting putrid, sour, salt and of offensive smell”. “Spitting of blood with cough” “expectoration of pus.” “Tough, purulent yellow, thick.”

Cough: Cough worse in evening till midnight; from motion; from cold, wet weather, from going from warm to a cold place. After lying down, after eating and drinking. esp. cold things; from talking; Rattling cough with rattling and vomiting. Morning cough with much rattling in chest. Hard, dry, hacking cough. Yet there is rattling in chest, cough with exhaustion. Sweat, suffocates with cough. Spasmodic cough with deep, rough voice or else aphonia. Cough with burning pain in the chest.

Respiration: Oppression of breathing. Wheezing and rattling of mucus in the chest. When breathing painful throbbing in the head and teeth. Respiration oppressed having some kind of bad smell. Quick respiration. Dyspnoea worse in turning over in bed and on dropping off to sleep. Great dyspnoea, wants to be fanned. Breathing short with cold hands and feet; desire to be fanned, must have more air, wants the doors and windows opened. Breath is short and chest tired, on waking; loss of breath on turning in bed or when going to sleep. Great dyspnoea from oppression of the chest in the evening when lying, worse when sitting great anxiety but no restlessness. Respiration ceases entirely when falling asleep. Respiration frequent and superficial.

Pain: Feeling of weakness and fatigue of the chest, chest feels weary on waking. Short breath and tired feeling in chest on waking. Severe burning in the chest as from glowing coals. Pain in chest from drinking cold water. Pain in upper right chest extending through to right shoulder-blade. Violent stitches deep in lower right chest. Tearing in left chest. Pain in left lung. Stitches below left breast, cannot sleep or walk on account of this pain. In the left middle chest painful spot, size of a dollar.

Tearing from chest to hips. Burning in chest after cough. A tight feeling in the chest with constant desire to cough. Burning in the lungs, burning in the sides of the chest, burning behind sternum, burning worse when coughing. Feeling of a load on chest. Sensation of rawness and soreness in chest. Burning, pressing, and stinging in chest. Asthma of old people with blueness of the skin.

Pulse: Pulse small, weak, imperceptible, uneven; intermitting; thread-like, scarcely perceptible and intermittent.

Patient: Children and very old people. Broken down, debilitated persons, full of gas.

Fever: Fever worse in evening; at night, before midnight. Putrid or sour sweat. Cold sweat. Loquacity. Wishes to be constantly fanned.

Conditions: Desperate cases of pneumonia, and is indicated usually after Antim-tart. Great quantities of loosened mucus in lungs, cyanosis and threatening paralysis of lungs; fetid sputa, cold sweat and breath wants to be constantly fanned.

Collapse of pneumonia, body icy cold especially about extremities, breath cool, pulse thread like, scarcely perceptible and intermittent. Blue lips. Breathing weak and superficial and frequent; conscious or unconscious. Cough by spells or no cough, hippocratic face, eyes half-open, nose pinched and cold, pupils insensible, no complaining or crying, pulse small, quick, difficult to count, body emaciated and marbled, feet and hands blue and cold, abdomen distended with gas Air hunger, must be fanned hard. Blueness, coldness, ecchymoses, body blue and icy cold. Patient almost lifeless but the head is hot. Wants all the windows open, with oppressed and quickened respiration.

Neglected pneumonia with spasmodic cough, bluish face, offensive expectoration. Neglected pneumonia, with expectoration of a dirty yellow color and smelling badly. Old badly treated cases of pneumonia, with remaining bronchitis, weakness of chest when coughing; pneumonia third stage with fetid sputa, cold breath, cold sweat, desire to be fanned; threatened paralysis of lungs. Pneumonia with burning in the lungs especially with the cough. Pneumonia with a great deal of rattling in chest. Pneumonia with affections of right heart. Collapse with cold knees.

Accompaniments: Restlessness and anxiety in the evening 4-6 p.m. Pulsations in ear. Nose-bleed with pale face. Coryza with hoarseness. Tip of nose red. Pale face. Easily bleeding gums. Dry mouth with no thirst. Tongue dry, white, yellow brown. Burning, roughness, rawness in throat. Great desire for coffee. Aversion to meat and fat. Bitter or salty taste. Distention of abdomen from flatulency. Great pain in stomach on account of flatulence worse especially on lying down. Amelioration by eructation, or by passing flatus downwards. Foul, decaying, diarrhoeic stools.

Constipation, hard, touch, scanty stool. Stool passes with difficulty even if soft. Red, dark urine. Hoarseness, worse talking, in the evening. Loss of voice at night or when talking. Brown yellow blotches on the chest. Heat and burning in the hands. Icy cold hands, tips of the fingers covered with cold sweat. Cramps in legs, soles of feet. Cold knees. Sweat of feet. No sleep, with inability to open eyes. Debility worse at noon. Asthma dates back to measles. Falling off of the hair after severe illness. Itching around nostril. Unable to sit down on account of a sensation of a plug in the back. Hot, moist, offensive flatus. Scalp itches when getting warm in bed. Hot head.

Aggravation: From changes of weather especially warm damp weather, south or south-west winds. Sultry heat of summer or autumn. Fat food, butter, pork, abuse of quinine, mercury, singing, reading aloud, warm, damp weather, morning, before midnight, lying.

Amelioration: From eructations, cold air, from being fanned.

Complementary to: Ant-t. Kali-c. Phos. Sulph.

Remedies following: Ars-a. Kali-c. Lyc. Puls. Sulph.

OPIUM.

Type: Lobar pneumonia, typhoid pneumonia, infantile pneumonia, pneumonia of old people, double pneumonia, pneumonia notha.

Stages: Second stage.

Location: Both lungs, left side, right side.

Causes: Fright, charcoal vapors, from inhaling gas, wine.

Expectoration: Expectoration of blood, thick, frothy mucus. Frothy expectoration of blood and mucus. Bloody expectoration, difficult, purulent, scanty; flat (taste) viscid, watery, yellow. Blood thick frothy, mixed with mucus.

Cough: Cough with dyspnoea and blue face. Cough with frothy expectoration of blood and mucus. Dry cough with tickling in larynx. Cough with profuse sweat on whole body. Violent, dry, hollow cough worse after repose. Cough during deglutition or when taking an inspiration. Difficult cough with smothering. Drowsy with cough.
