AT the Dispensary some time ago a little girl was brought to my notice with a swollen face after a dental operation with the following symptoms; pain in jaw with stiffness and difficulty in opening the mouth. Arnica 30 in three or four doses was given to her and she was asked to show herself to the dentist in the morning. As I had predicted, the swelling had gone entirely, the socket of the extracted tooth was clean and not inflamed, as it had been the day previous, and the dental surgeon was very much impressed with the rapidity of the cure.
A week or two later the self-same dentist sent an S. O. S. message to me: ” Can you give me the medicine which cured the little girl so quickly? A stock prescription of Arnica 6 was sent to her with instructions ” to be used as often as the urgency of the individual case required and medicine to be stopped when the patient was feeling better”.
The dentist reported a few days later that the patient was extremely astonished and gratified with the almost instantaneous relief she experienced after taking one of these tasteless pills. “I could open my mouth within twenty minutes of taking the first dose, and I felt better after each dose I took. Much better than all the mouth washes and I do not feel so ill either as I usually do after aspirin.”.
Still a third example: this time to show that Arnica is just as efficacious in preventing bruising as in removing it. A doctors wife had several enormous fangs removed under a general anaesthetic. They proved to be rather more stubborn than was at first expected, and previous experience had taught my friend that pain and an ugly disfigurement was bound to develop, so very diffidently, seeing this was a doctors wife, she asked her whether her husband would mind her taking something which would prevent all this unnecessary suffering.
Being reassured on this matter she gave her Arnica 6, one pill, asked her to come back in a couple of hours. Everything appeared normal, no swelling had occurred, so to make doubly sure, she offered her another pill of Arnica: ” What is that, what are you giving her?” interjected her doctor husband. On being shown the bottle of Arnica which was labelled, my lord exclaimed, “Oh! you can give her as much of that as you like, that wont make any difference.” The dentist quietly remarked, ” One pill will do, you will see.” And he did see, the next morning his wife woke up having had no pain and minus any swelling; did it convince the doctor? Oh, dear no, that was “just an accident, dont you know.”.
Haemorrhages will occur, even in the best regulated dental surgeries, after extractions, and they are a great trial to everybody concerned, including anxious parents and frightened children. And the doctor who is called in, usually in the early hours of the morning, is naturally blaming the unfortunate dentist, and as for hospital house-surgeons, their language is more than lurid and illuminating as to what they think of that dentist. Well, homoeopathy does not leave one high and dry, even during stop bleeding.
No need for packs or stitching up the cavity, or applying Adrenalin, or any other violent method as recommended by the highest authorities. All that is needed is a pill or two of Phosphorus, almost any potency, 6 or 3x, or 30, or even higher. The bleeding just stops, as if by a miracle.
I remember years ago being called to a case of dental haemorrhage. Everywhere was gore, huge clots inside the mouth, the mother was weeping and as she thought her darlings last hour had come, and not absolutely sure whether a mere woman could be trusted to cope with a serious case, especially when all I did was to produce a case of medicine and pop a we powder into the childs mouth.
This was repeated every ten minutes, then every quarter of an hour and in an hours time the mouth was nice and clean. The mother was quite impressed. As for the nurses, you should hear them on the subject of these pills. ” Do they work ? of course they do, we should not like to be without them, they halve our anxiety and there are no anxious mothers sending up messages, is my child all right ?”.
So I should advise all and sundry who fall into the dentists hands to equip themselves with Arnica for pain and swelling and with Phosphorus for any bleeding which may distress them subsequently and the visit to the dentist will be robbed of half its fear and anxiety.
