EDITORIAL NOTES AND COMMENTS

Ravenous hunger about 11 A.M. is reminiscent of our old brimstone friend Sulphur, in whom burning plays a very conspicous part.

The modality “aggravation of many symptoms from drinking wine, even a small quantity” may now with Puritanical propriety be carefully expunged from American homoeopathic materia medicas. Wine, wine! What is wine, anyway? The materia medicas will have to undergo revision, in which the effects of “bootleg liquor” will of course be noted. Possibly some of our Canadian friends can help us out and we suspect that even the homoeopathic profession can furnish willing provers.

For the sake of science, we ourselves might, in an unguarded moment, be persuaded to act as a Versuchskaninchen, especially if the provings were to be made with London Dock Port or Berncastler Doktor. No doubt, however, special dispensation from the all-highest seat of government at Washington would have to be obtained, or we would be compelled to venture forth upon the deep blue sea, well beyond the notorious three-mile limit. Let us hasten with the noble task before Uncle Sam, in his wisdom, pushes the limit another nine miles out.

And in the meantime, let us thank with all the fervor of our souls the fanatics who have been the means of compelling us to unravel several yards of red tape every time we are in need of two drachms of innocent Pulsatilla 30th dilution. Al Jolson, the famous Broadway comedian, or was it Frank Tinney, once said, “In 1620 the Puritans landed on Plymouth Rock! it is a pity that Plymouth Rock hadnt landed on the Puritans!” Of course, we do not subscribe to this sentiment, nor take it seriously, and yet- and yet-look how truly free England has been since their departure.

Remember Zincum in chorea, the result of suppressed eruptions or of fright.

URTICARIA STOPPING DURING MEASLES.-

“Apert and Broca treated without success a girl, aged 9, suffering from urticaria. The affection disappeared during ten days before and ten days after an eruption of measles in the child. This may be an instance of the energy in measles, similar to that against tuberculin. On the other hand, a serum sickness (with urticaria) may be present in measles. Even without an injection of serum, urticaria can precede the rash.”-J.A.M.A.

Hahnemann long ago pointed out that the stronger of two disease will suspend the weaker and that two similar diseases can annihilate each other. Verily, even in modern medical journals, there is nothing new under the sun!.

FOUNDATION FOR HOMOEOPATHIC RESEARCH-

Elsewhere in this issue we print by request of the above foundation the prize essay of one of the students of the New York Homoeopathic Medical College and Flower Hospital, a senior who has just won his degree of Doctor of Medicine. The essay ably reflects the painstaking efforts of the teachers in the department of Materia Medica, who without compensation, are giving of their time and money to educate homoeopathic physicians.
