SULPHUR CASES

On the strength of the indications, I ruled out Thuja, and gave Sulphur, 30, one dose. Within 24 hours reaction had set in the swelling increased became hotter, and in 48 hours it showed signs of suppuration. In a weeks time, the dose was repeated; it produced a quick suppuration. The abscess was opened. But the healing of the wound did not progress and the patient had to be given an occasional dose of sulphur in ascending potency, (though the wound was small, it refused to heal) before the wound healed completely and the condition of the knee came to normal.

Case No. 6.

An educated adult, double graduate. Got nasal catarrh, left side, with constant sneezing and running of the nose; worse in the nights, 8 P. M. onwards, also in the mornings, after 7 A. M. for about 2 hours; exposure to breeze aggravated the trouble.

After 22 months the right nostril was also affected. Thereafter, both the nostrils got blocked alternately. It was noticed that, usually the cold got aggravated on Saturday nights, and then subsequently for two nights more; that is, three nights in the week. This tendency of weekly aggravations continued for 6 months, before he came to me. Digestion normal; sleep, normal. Liked breeze very much and liked to be out-doors. Nasal discharge, sourish; nose discomforts, ameliorated with fomentations. Liked cold drinks, and they agreed well. Liked milk, and sour and pungent things.

Two months before he came to me he had his antra explored by puncture and irrigated by a nose specialists, the washings showing lot of mucus on both the sides, but more from the left side. Transillumination also showed opacity more on the left side. The whole area, antra and the nose, were very painful and tender. Three punctures were made during 6 weeks, and others were to be made until cure. There was some relief from the acute conditions but the weekly aggravations were still there. The case was worked out with Bogers Synoptic Key and sulphur 30, a dose, was given. Exactly after four weeks, he wrote to me in the following way:

“Since the last fortnight there has been definite improvement in my nose complaint; this week it is definitely better. There is an increasing tendency of the nostrils remaining clear and breathing is more free. Weekly pain in the nostrils seem to have disappeared . In short this improvement gives me great relief”.

This statement gave me too, great relief! But exactly after six weeks of starting the treatment, there was a relapse of sneezing and running of the nose, lasting throughout the day with a desire to take hot drinks and heaviness of the whole body. The dose was repeated. It is full 3 months now and he is O. K.

Case No. 7.

“Headache with sleeplessness, chronic constipation and high B. P. for six years.” With these complaints came a fatty lady, aged 48 years, of a fair complexion, with 155 lbs. weight. Headache was constant, worse in the nights and no sleep at all. If at all she got some sleep a slight noise woke her up ; this waking or disturbance of sleep, aggravated her headache. In the dead of the night, she used to go up on the terrace for cooling her head or douched her head with cold water or remained under a fan.

It started as a hammering pain in the vertex and then spread to the temples. There was no headache in the mornings. Perspired on the vertex and the forehead, more in hot weather, and during work,–even the hairs got wet and perspiration trickled down her head. Mouth: bitter taste, in warm weather or while working. Thirst at 11 A. M. and 5 P. M. for cold water and took lot of water after meals. Stools: constipated, very chronic, even missed for days. Constipation increased headache, took purgatives daily for the last 3 years.

Milk disagreed and produced diarrhoea. Mild heat of soles and palms all the time and kept them uncovered in the nights. Hated being near fireplace. Often pains in chest, of shifting character or palpitations; leg joints got stiff, aching with the first motion and ameliorated by continued motion. B. P.

One dose of Sulphur, 30, given. Improvement started immediately and within a week she slept better, and got headache only if sleep was disturbed. No pains or palpitations in chest. After two weeks, bean to have daily natural stools. Improvement lasted fro two months, and then had to repeat the dose because of reappearance of heat of body and headache. This held on for another four weeks. A dose of sulph. 200 removed her remaining complaints and there have been no troubles for over four months now. There was some fall (25) in the systolic B. P., but the diastolic has remained the same.

Case No. 8.

A typhoid case;–a girl aged 13 years. Got continuous high fever, with headache and pains in the epigastrium. Very costive, even strong purgatives (allopathic) would not work during the first 4-5 days. When I asked to treat the case, on the sixth day, the symptoms were:–Severe headache, very thirsty, pains and tenderness midway between umbilicus and the spine of the ilium right side, and also in the right side, and also in the right hypochondrium; aggravated with pressure, and after eating; ameliorated by lying on both sides.

The pain was continuous, Liked breeze and hated to cover during the fever. Aversion to milk, since the fever; very thirsty; desire cold water, but warm food; perspired during fever. Headache was ameliorated by lying quiet; hated being disturbed; vertigo on rising. Hated noises, talking or being talked to. Liked cold applications during temperature; tongue coated, thick brown. Temperature rose in forenoons and evenings:–

7 A. M.–T*. 102*.

9 A. M.–T*. 203*.

1 P. M.–T*. 100-2*.

5 P. M.–T*. 104-5*.

8 P. M.–T*. 103*.

10 P. M.–T*. 101*.

The case was worked out with Kents Repertory with the following rubrics:–(1) Pains, abdomen during heat; (2) pains worse lying on back; (3) worse pressure; (4) Vertigo on rising from bed. (5) Constipation; (6) perspiration with heat; (7) remittent fever, worse mornings and evenings; (8) pain hypochondria.

There was a toss between two drugs. Arsenic and Sulphur; sulphur being the most similar, three doses, 30 potency, were administered, two hourly, in the afternoon. That night the patient slept soundly; the pain in the lower belly and hypochondrium disappeared over night; but returned in the epigastrium, which was there during the first four days of the fever.

She said she felt very much better within less than 24 hours. Placebo continued. On the 4th day of the treatment, the epigastric pain disappeared and on the tenth day of the fever the temperature came down to 96-5* at 6 A. M. But at noon it began to rise when chilliness, at 1 P. M. being 103*; it fell overnight to 97*. Sulphur 30, 2 doses, given again on the 11th of the fever; the highest temperature on that day being 100.5* at 8 P. M; on the 12th day, the condition was same; on the 13th day, lowest temperature, 95.5*, and highest, 97*. Thereafter temperature never rose up and the patient made an uneventful, steady recovery.
