This is the fourth morning, in succession, I have awoke with an erection (sixth day). Awoke in the night with violent erections, which cold water relieved; returned to bed, and before an hour had elapsed, was again awakened by violent erections, applied cold water, and slept the remainder of the night (I will here remark, that I had been suffering for several months with loss of sexual vigor and entire absence of venereal desire, not having had any erections for several months, but now it is the reverse, altogether too much of a good thing), (third day). Awoke with very strong erections, and pain in abdomen (third day); awoke with emission and very firm erection, which continued about ten minutes after the emission (fourth day); terrible erections, at 4 A.M. (sixth day). Great sexual desire, with emissions (fourth night); great sexual desire, with terrible erections (fifth night). Sexual desire increased; hard erections, at night; lewd dreams, with emissions (sixth night); great sexual desire, with emissions; emissions every other night (ninth day). For two weeks following, the drug marked increase of sexual desire. After a second dose, most remarkable and intense sexual excitement, which is not allowed to be gratified by any indulgence. Amorous excitement, impelling the mind to dwell on and revel in imaginary sexual pleasure. Almost constant priapism, night and day, for seven days, impelling to amorous ecstasies and mental analysis of the physiological and psychological aspect of venery. Female. An occasional aching pain in left ovarian region (after about four hours and a half, fourth day), In the evening, twinges of pain in the left ovarian region (tenth day). Appearance of menses, which have been delayed a week (normal menstruation very regular); during the period, profuse yellowish- brown leucorrhoea (thirteenth day). Menses painful the first time in several months; a sore bruised pain in abdominal region, with a sickening sensation. (Normal menstruation profuse and protracted, of a good color, no change in character, quality, or otherwise). Excessive and voluptuous pruritus, at night, after retiring, lasting about half an hour, making me feel irritable and exasperated (usually pruritus slight after menses, never before), (twelfth day).
Respiratory organs
Dry cough, as from dust in the throat, followed by nausea (after three hours and a half). Can get the breath only half way down (eighth day).
Chest
Chest feels tight, as if encircled by a band (after nine hours, fifth day). In the evening slight pain in left lung, which felt as though there would be a stitch if a deep inspiration was taken, but on taking one there was not (seventh day). Numb sensation in lower part of sternum, a symptom experienced much when living in a malarious country (fourteenth day). Dull stunning pain in the chest, with twitching in the throat, at 9.30 A.M. (second day). Pain, commencing in the right side of the chest, extending across the left (after twenty minutes, seventh day). Quite sharp pain under right clavicle (after four hours, second day). (Sharp pain in both sides of chest, worse in left, had been subject to such pains for several months), (second day).
Twitching of muscles over eighth and ninth ribs (left side), (eighth day). Muscles on left side, over tenth and eleventh ribs, commenced to throb and jerk, which lasted from 6 till 11 P.M.
(after two hours, fourth day). Heavy throbbing pain under tenth and eleventh ribs, on left side, at 11 A.M., which lasted till noon, then changed to the region of the kidneys, and continued till 2 P.M., when they extended downwards into my legs, especially the left (second day).
Heart and Pulse
Palpitation of the heart (first, second, third days, after first dose, twelfth day, and after second dose, thirteenth day). All day long, at intervals of ten minutes, a peculiar fluttering sensation at the base of the heart; it seemed to move; it startles me for a moment, but do not think of it again until the symptom recurs; continued all evening at shorter intervals than during the day; it became very annoying (second day); a slight fluttering of the heart, in the evening (third day); fluttering at the heart (fourth day). A slight pain at apex of heart, in the evening (tenth day). Pulse. Pulse 70 before taking, fell to 50, when it was very feeble; in the reaction it rose to 80. Pulse 75 before taking, fell to 52. Pulse 71 (when taking the dose); 58 (after one hour and a half); 55 (after two hours); 52 (after two hours and a half); 48, small, feeble, and difficult to feel (after three hours); 60 (after ten hours); 65 (after fourteen hours); 75 (second morning). Pulse 50, week and small (second day). Pulse irregular (first, second, and third days).
Neck and Back
Neck. Terrible pain in neck and occipital region, extending;forward to supraorbital notch, and ten down into eyes, the same as before (seventh day). While lying down, in afternoon, muscles on right side of neck felt as though they;would give way (sixth day). On lying down in bed, at night, muscles on right side of neck felt as though they would give out, and neck would be dislocated. (I was lying on my right side), (sixth day). Back.
Pains, heaviness, and weakness of the muscles of the back and lower extremities (fifth day). Pain in back (eleventh day); continues, especially when sitting (twelfth day). Pain in back while bending forwards, extending from scapula to lumbar region, on the right side (fifteenth day). Dorsal. Aching in the dorsal region (seventh day). Pain under right shoulder-blade, as if a sharp instrument were thrust in (after four hours, seventh day).
Burning along the spine, worse from trying to study, better from motion (after third dose, twelfth day). Very hot feeling in the lower dorsal and lumbar region (first, second and third days).
Lumbar. Heavy dull pain in the small of the back, at 6 P.M.
(sixth day). Severe aching pain in the lumbar region, extending down the legs, aggravated by motion (second day). Severe, heavy, dragging pains in the region of the kidneys and back of the neck, extending upwards and downwards until they met between the scapulae, at 2 P.M. (fifth day). Great pain between the hips, of a dull, heavy, dragging character, which descended slowly to the left leg, with severe chills, and throbbing and jerking in muscles in different parts of the body (after two hours, fourth day). Tired sensation in lumbar region and limbs, when waking from sleep, 12 P.M. (first night). Awoke at 6 A.M., with tired and heavy sensation in small of back and limbs (third day); same, at 4 P.M., with dull, heavy, frontal headache (fourth day). Pain in lumbar region (tenth day). Shooting pain in upper left lumbar region (after nine hours). In the evening, a slight shooting pain in right side of small of back (eighth day). Stitch in small of back on bending forward, while sitting (seventh day). Sacral.
Quite severe pain in region of coccyx, bladder, rectum and umbilicus, all vague and indefinite, wandering and shooting, caused by wind in the intestines (fifth day). Sharp pain, for an instant, in region of base of coccyx (after thirty minutes). Weak feeling in sacral and lumbar regions, with the excessive languor (seventh day).
Extremities
Weakness and heaviness of the limbs (third day). Heaviness and weariness of limbs, on walking a short distance (sixteenth day).
Rheumatic pains in the joints of extremities (after first dose, thirteenth day). Great heaviness in the arms and legs, especially the legs, on exertion; legs feel weak and heavy all the time (sixth day). Great heaviness in the extremities, especially the left; legs feel as if made of lead (after ten hours). Weakness of the extremities (fourth day). Great weakness and debility of extremities (second day). Awoke, at 6 A.M., with tired and heavy sensation in limbs and small of back (third day); same, with dull, heavy, frontal headache, at 4 P.M. (fourth day).
Superior Extremities.
Shoulders feel very tired and sore, as after violent exercise (eighth day). Right shoulder feels sore and tired (after four hours, seventh day). Same sensation in both shoulders (fourth day). Deep seated pain in the right arm, at elbow-joint, between ulna and radius, continuing for several days (after four days).
Shooting pain in the left arm, at elbow, extending down the arm (after eight hours, sixth day). Twitching of lower portion of biceps of left arm, lasting half an hour (after twenty-four hours); during the forenoon (third day). Shooting pains in hands (tenth day). Left hand goes to sleep, feels as if blood would stop circulating (thirteenth day).
Inferior Extremities.
Very great debility of muscular system, especially of the lower extremities, with the sore throat; unable to remain out of bed (third day). Great weakness and heaviness of the lower limbs (ninth day). Great weakness of the muscles, especially those of the lower extremities and back (third day). Great weakness in the lower limbs (second day). Numb sensation in the lower limbs (after five hours, fifth day). Great heaviness and weakness of the lower extremities (after eight hours). Tired feeling in the limbs, when going upstairs (after five hours and a half). Hip.
