Introduction

Lepidium Bonariense, D. C. Natural order: Cruciferae. Preparation: Tincture or trituration of the leaves.

Mind

Emotional. She fancies herself alone in a graveyard, pursued by a ghost, and screams so that her voice is lost next day; yet nobody hears her (fourth day). Merry mood (curative effect, after the sadness of the previous days), (fourth day). Merry mood; she laughs about everything (sixth day). Sadness on awaking (second day). Sad, uneasy, quarrelsome, dissatisfied; with deep sleep (fifth day). Deep melancholy; with thoughts of sickness (fourth day). Intellectual. Want of ideas; inability to think; with indifference to everything (first day).

Head

Vertigo. Vertigo, with disposition to fall forward (fourth day). Vertigo, with falling forward of the head, on setting down a basin of water (third day). Vertigo and nausea, in the evening (eighth day). Dizziness, at about 9 A.M.; her head fell forward, and she imagined the floor was sinking under her; everything seemed turning around (second day). General Head. Heaviness of the head, with an indefinite feeling of uneasiness in the brain, especially on the left side (third day). Headache, with heat at the forepart of the vertex (first day). Violent headache, at 4 P. M. (first day). Violent headache in the morning, lasting till 2 P. M. (thirteenth day); violent headache in the evening, with sense of compression in the forehead, from temple to temple (sixteenth day); the violent headache continues, and is felt all day; beginning regularly at about 10 A.M. and ceasing at night (seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth days). Constrictive pain in the head (fourth day). Constant dull headache (first day). Pressing and pricking pain around the head (fifth day). Pain on rising, as from the pressure of a heavy ring on the head (third day). On waking, acute pains in the head and posterior cervical muscles (fourth day). Beating and throbbing in the head, from within outward, which causes it to hang down (fourth day). Violent headache, as if the brain were beaten with a hammer from the inside and jumped up and down in an empty space; it lasts half an hour (second day). Forehead. Pain in the forehead, with throbbing in the left side, for ten minutes (sixth day). Headache above the orbits and in the temples, worse by contact and when raising the eyes (third day). Tightness in the forehead, as if compressed, at 11 o’clock, lasting a quarter of an hour (first day). Pulling in the forehead and at the root of the nose (first day). Throbbing over the forehead, making the head fall forward; it does not last long (fourth day). Vertex. Boring pain on the left side of the vertex at noon; it pierces to the ear (third day). Parietals. Pain passing quickly through the right side of the head, from the top of the left parietal bone to the eyebrow (sixth day). Pains in the whole left side of the brain, commencing above the eye (which feels contracted), and spreading to the vertex, the back part of the head, and lastly to the nape of the neck, where they remain seated for some time; they appear in succession, one never being felt until another has ceased, and seem to be in the membranes (second day). Slight lancinations in the head, always on the left side (twenty-fourth day). External Head. Sensitiveness of the scalp (fifth day).

Eye

Eyes red, injected, and painful (seventh day). Burning sensation in the eyes, at 11 o’clock (fifth day). Pain in the right eye, as from a heavy ring which presses against it and causes an itching in the inner canthus (fifth day). Lancinations in the right eye, without redness, for three hours (third day). Pricking in the eyes, in the evening, as from something very astringent (sixth day). Orbit. Lancinating pains above the eyes, and in the temples (seventh day). Lancinations above the left eye, and in the left temple (twenty- first day). Lids. Eyelids very weary; she can scarcely lift them all night (second day). Weight on the eyelids, with inclination to close them (first day). Lachrymal Apparatus. Painless lachrymation (third day). The left eye is full of water; the pain is worse when moving; it follows the eyebrow, and lasts six hours; left eye still watery, worse in the open air; ending with itching; for ten minutes (sixth day). When attempting to read, her eyes fill with tears (fourth day). Ball. Eyeball and lids much injected (sixth day). Vision. Dimness of vision, as if a white bandage were over the eyes; when she looks up, the sky seems gray (sixth day).

Ear

External. Pain around the right ear, as if pricked by needless, relieved by rubbing; it lasts a quarter of an hour (third day). Beating pain above the left ear (second day). Middle. The left ear feels as if completely stopped up; hearing is lost on that side (sixth day). Lancinations in the ears (sixth day). Pricking in the ear and down along the jaw (third day). Great itching in the right ear, worse when stooping, lasting half an hour (second day). Hearing. Hard of hearing (fourth day). Roaring in the left ear (third day). Roaring in the right ear, for almost two minutes, at 5 o’clock (seventh day).

Nose

Objective. Nose swollen on the left side, with pain, which is less in the open air, and worse by contact (third day). Violent coryza, with inflammation and itching of the nose (third day). Epistaxis from the right nostril; the blood is black and clotted, with itching; the epistaxis continued until 1 o’clock, when it became profuse; the blood, however, being light red (fifth day). Subjective. Heat in the nose, and sensation as from a current of cold air in the left nasal fossa (third day). Burning in the corner of the left nostril, with pricking at the tip of the nose, for fifteen minutes (sixth day). Great itching in the right nostril (third day).

Face

A streak of pain from the temple to the chin, as if the face were cut with a razor (sixth day). Cheeks. Pain in the left cheek-bone, with redness (third day). Pain in the right cheek, which passes off by pressing on the malar bone (third day). Painful but short-lasting sensation in the right zygoma (third day). Pricking on the cheeks (fourth day). China Pain in the left lower jaw, extending towards the shoulder; for five minutes (eighth day). Pain as from a cut by a pen-knife on the top of the jaw; short lasting (sixth day). Lancination in the left jaw-bone (twenty-first day). Pain and beating in the left jaw, for ten minutes (eighth day).

Mouth

Teeth. Pain in the teeth of the left lower jaw, felt also in the ear, and causing deafness for three minutes (seventh day). Pains in the jaw-bones, as if all the teeth were affected twentieth day). Sharp pain in the right lower jaw-bone, in which all the teeth are quite sound (second day). Toothache on the right side; at 1 o’clock (sixth day). Toothache; the teeth are soft and on edge, all day; every day since taking; not at night (seventh day). Gums. Acute pain in the lower gums lasting an hour (second day). Tongue. Burning at the tip of the tongue as if from spice, with an expansive feeling in the papillae (third day). Itching on the tongue, like pricking, for five minutes (eighth day). General Mouth. Great dryness of the mouth and throat (sixteenth day). Heat in the left side of the mouth, as from eating spice (third day).

Throat

Burning in the throat, with nausea, and noise in the ears when swallowing saliva (fourth day). Drawing pain deep in the throat; tongue thick, as if much swollen (first day). Swallowing. When eating a cake, it sticks in the oesophagus, and then suddenly falls as if shaken down; the same occurs when drinking (third day). External Throat. Pain from the left ear to the lower part of the neck, along the course of the carotid artery, worse when inclining the head to the right (sixth day). Pain like a cramp in the right side of the neck, extending to various parts of the shoulder and arm; relieved by pressure (third day). Violent drawing pain from the shoulder to the ear, hindering the motion of the head for three minutes (seventh day). Feeling as if a string were pulled from the shoulder to the ear (seventh day). Lancination from the ear to the shoulder (fourth day).

Stomach

Appetite. Hunger after dinner (second day). Longing for chocolate, salad, green fruit (third day). Longing for fruit, with loathing of all food (fourth day). Longing for water cresses, but on seeing them it is replaced by aversion (third day). No appetite (twenty-second and twenty-third days). Complete loss of appetite; loathing of meat (twenty-first day). Loathing of food, especially meat (twentieth day). A version to meat (sixth day). A version to milk (first day). Thirst. Thirst (first day). Thirst; dry mouth (sixth day). Great desire for vinegar (third day). Longing for tea (sixth day). Intense longing for coffee (first day). Eructation. Eructations (twentieth and twenty-fourth days). Eructations of air, without acidity, in the evening (seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth days). Foul eructations all day (seventh day). Sour eructations (fourth day). Nausea. Nausea all night (fourth day). Nausea after dinner, when holding the head down (sixth day). Nausea, which keeps getting worse, and reaches its height in half an hour; it goes off on stirring about (third day). Great nausea, for half an hour (seventh day). Qualmishness before eating (fourth day). Qualmishness followed by nausea before eating (third day). Stomach. Difficult digestion; weight on the stomach (sixth day). Weak feeling in the stomach, and tendency to collapse (third day). Faint feeling in the stomach, from 4 to 7 P. M. (fifth day). Pain at the pit of the stomach after eating, worse from contact, when walking (third day). Pain at the pit of the stomach, which is felt in the left breast, and jumps about; pricking in both these places at once (eighth day). Distressing pain at the pit of the stomach, with nausea; at 11 o’clock (fourth day). Burning in the stomach, with feeling of dryness and irritation (first day). Coldness in the gastric region, which spreads all over the chest as far as throat (third day). Compression, as by a girdle around the waist, apparently caused by a contraction of the diaphragm; it was especially felt at the epigastrium (third day). Dull pain at the stomach, followed by great desire to vomit (second day). Stomachache; nausea before eating (first day). Acute pain in the pit of the stomach after eating (second day). Sensation as if a knife were cutting into the epigastrium (fourth day). Pain in the cardia as if cut with a penknife; short-lasting (sixth day). Pain in the pit of the stomach, as if the body were cut in two by a bar; it lasts half an hour (third day). Beating at the pit of the stomach, with pricking, worse when drawing breath; short-lasting (sixth day). Palpitation at the epigastrium (fourth day).

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
In 1881 Allen published A Critical Revision of the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica.
