Pulse.

Pulsations 81 (before taking), 88 (after taking), 80 (next morning), (average of all cases). Rather frequent pulse (half an hour after 1 drachm of Lactucarium). Pulse not remarkably changed, perhaps a few beats slower than usual. Pulse retarded. Pulse slower (from 10 to 15 grains of Parisian Lactucarium). Pulse slow and tense (after 24 hours). Pulse a few beats slower than usual (1st day). Depression of the pulse from 75 to 62 within an hour and a half. Pulse diminished (from 6 to 8 grains of Parisian Lactucarium taken at intervals of three or four hours during the day). Pulse reduced from 67 to 60; in some persons the pulse was reduced from 10 to 12 beats, and in one individual still more.

Neck and Back

Neck. Pain in the nape of the neck when coughing (after 7 hours). Tension in the cervical muscles of both sides (after 20 minutes). Tensive cramplike pain in the muscles of the neck in the right side (after half an hour). Drawing and tension in the nape of the neck, shoulders, and cervical muscles (1st and 2nd days). Back. Pain in the spine, extending into the cauda equina, and also streaming through the coccyx (after 2 hours). Pinching pain, periodically extending through the back, in various directions. Drawing, frequently extending from the small of the back to the groin towards evening (1st day). Bruised pain in the lumbar region (after 10 hours to 4th day).

Extremities in General.

Heaviness of the limbs (1st day). Limbs tremulous and weak (1st day), Great weakness of the limbs, and disinclination to work, in the morning after rising, for fourteen days. The limbs frequently fall asleep (1st and 2nd day). Pain in the limbs. Cramplike pains, here and there (elbows, hands, fingers, lower legs) which impede the function of the limbs; they do not last long, and soon reappear in other places. All the limbs feel bruised, obliging lying in bed the whole day (4th day).

Superior Extremities.

Drawings in the arms, especially starting from the elbow- joints. Frequent drawing and jerking in the arms (soon). Periodic drawing and jerking in the arms (soon). Fine stitch beneath the right arm (soon). Shoulder. Transient paralytic feeling in left should-joint (2nd day). Pains in the shoulders and limbs (from 10 to 15 grains of Parisian Lactucarium). Sticking in the right axilla, as from a small sharp instrument, lasting several days; the pain is aggravated by pressure and by raising the arm. Wandering tearing pain as if in the bones in the joints of the right shoulder and elbow, in the open air; it afterwards extends, now into the wrist, now into the knees, now into the leg, now into the ankle, neck, temples, etc. for a short time, lasting till the eighth day (after 8 hours). Arm. Dull, very transient pain in the deltoid and pectoral muscles, afterwards extending to the shoulders, during rest. Cramplike pain on the back of the lower portion of the upper arm, which is relieved by moving it (1st and 2nd days) Dull drawing and feeling of weakness in the left upper arm (1st day). Pain as from a sprain in the deltoid muscle of the left arm, only while the forearm is bent (after 18 hours). Elbow. Dull drawing in the tip of the right elbow (soon). Forearm. Tearing pain in the right forearm, with a subsequent paralyzed feeling in the little finger (after two hours). Wrist. Drawing pain in the external condyle of the left wrist (after 1 hour and a half). Hand. Trembling of the hands. Painful jerkings in the hands. Cramplike drawing in the left hand (1st day). Fingers. Feeling of heat in several fingers, which leaves behind a weakness. Pain in the middle fingers of each hand, a kind of tearing (after 3 hours).

Inferior Extremities.

Objective. Gait unsteady; he reels to and fro (soon). Staggering while walking (from 10 to 15 grains of Parisian Lactucarium); on attempting to walk. Great weariness of the limbs and right arm (after half an hour). Subjective. The limb falls asleep while sitting (1st day). Heaviness of the limbs and tension in the hollows of the knees, while walking. Drawing in the limbs and back (1st day). Painful whizzing in the limbs, in the afternoon, while sitting quietly. Thigh. Jerking in the left thigh (after half an hour and 3 hours). Knee. Tension in the hollows of the knees on rising from a seat; the thighs feel bruised (after 8 hours). Leg. Trembling of the left lower leg, in the afternoon (2nd day). Feeling of heaviness like a stoppage of blood in the lower legs, while sitting (1st day). Cramp in the left calf while walking, lasting about a quarter of an hour (after 9 hours). Drawing and a feeling of stoppage in the right lower leg, especially during rest. Dull drawing pain with a feeling of stiffness in the right lower leg, at times extending up into the hip. Foot A pain in the ball of the foot on the digital border of the second metatarsal bone, and in the great toe of the left foot; the toes feel grown together and drawn back, only when stepping upon them (5th to 8th days). Pain in the sole of the left foot as from a stone-bruise, during rest, disappearing when stepping upon it. Toes. Sensation beneath the nail of the 4th toe as if suppurating, without any external alteration; and pain on pressure (third day).

General Symptoms

Objective. It causes good nutrition, and diminishes corpulency. Alarming convulsions in a laying-in woman (from the juice of the ordinary salad). Weariness for 12 hours. Weary and sleepy, contrary to habit (1st day). He is as weary and sick after a slight exertion in the house, as if he had taken a long walk, in the forenoon (1st day). Great weariness and sleepiness throughout the day (1st day). Astonishing weariness (after 1 hour). Great weakness (from 10 to 15 grains of Parisian Lactucarium). Subjective. (A truly enlivening, invigorating power, from Lactucarium, in a hysterical woman). Increased feeling of lightness (from 6 to 8 grains of Parisian Lactucarium). Unusual lightness of the body in the open air (after some hours). Great lightness in the open air, and an agreeable, healthy feeling in the whole body (after 12 hours). A peculiar indescribable sensation of lightness in the whole body without narcotic effect and without any abnormality of the pulse (from 3 to 5 grains of Parisian Lactucarium). Feeling as if the body were swimming, in bed (soon). Periodic drawing in various parts of the body (1st and 2nd days). Sharp, cramp like, jerking pain becomes firmly seated close to those parts of the body which bend (the neck, hypochondria, elbow, hips), and especially occurs in the evening and during rest; it is not in the joints, but only near them, and seems to prefer the extensor rather than the flexor surface, and also to be worse in the morning. Desire for the open air. She recovers in the open air; especially the chest becomes freer. Inclination to sit upright.

Skin

Inflammation and slight eruption caused on delicate parts of the skin by the external application of the extract. Fine sticking twinging and biting, here and there beneath the skin, suddenly. Slight pain under the skin, here and there, in the limbs, almost like a fine sticking. Prickling pain beneath the skin of the nape of the neck, which gradually becomes seated in a small spot beneath the right scapula. Crawling itching on the left toes, and left fingers (3rd day).

Sleep and Dreams.

Sleepiness. Yawning and stretching of the limbs (from 10 to 15 grains of Parisian Lactucarium). Frequent yawning; (1st day). It promotes sleep. Hypnotic effect. Inclination to sleep. Inclination to sleep, which, however, does not follow. Great sleepiness (after a quarter of an hour). Great sleepiness, without being able to completely overcome his previous wakefulness (half an hour after 10 grains of Lactucarium). Great sleepiness, with frequent yawning (after 2 hours); (1st day). Is obliged to go to bed earlier than usual, on account of great sleepiness. Irresistible sleepiness (from 2 scruples of Lactucarium). Quiet and refreshing sleep, when taken in the evening (from 6 to 8 grains of Parisian Lactucarium). Quiet, natural, and refreshing sleep, with diminished warmth (from moderate doses of Lactucarium). Quiet and gentle sleep at night, but little sleep in the morning, contrary to habit (1st day). Very good sleep at night (1st night). Sleep at night sound and without dreams. Sound sleep full of dreams (1st night). Sound sleep, with emission of semen without any sensation of it (1st night). Deep sleep, lasting 5 hours and a half (half an hour after 1 drachm of Lactucarium). Deep sleep for 5 hours, without stupefaction (from 1 drachm of Lactucarium). Heavy sleep, without alteration of the pulse or increase of the secretions (from 20 grains of Lactucarium). Stupid sleep at night; cannot rouse herself from sleep, in the morning. Sopor. Sleeplessness. Sleeplessness (boy). Little sleep, without special uneasiness (2nd and 3rd nights). Night very restless, with many vivid dreams (1st night). Sleep restless, unrefreshing (from 6 to 8 grains of Parisian Lactucarium, taken at intervals of three or four hours during the day). Sleep at night restless; awakes in the morning with great confusion of the head. Very restless sleep, wakes almost every quarter of an hour (4th to 6th night). Very restless on account of headache, spasmodic cough and febrile heat accompanied by dreams which he did not remember in the morning (3rd and 4th nights). Long restless sleep (from 10 to 15 grains of Parisian Lactucarium). Dreams. She slept all night, but had many dreams (1st and 2nd nights).
