Lactic acid



Chest

Left lung and back of the breast sore all day, but did not pain (5th day). Pain in the lower part of the left side, extended around to the back, soon passed off, after eating, at 6 P. M. (4th day). Woke at midnight with a scream, and pain and cramp in the muscles of the left side, with jerking and sharp cutting pain in the muscles of the abdomen (2nd day). Sharp, transient pain in the lower part of the left side, at 10.30 P. M. (2nd day). At 9 A.M. a severe, sharp, cutting or sticking pain in the upper third of the right side; worse from motion; most relief from folding the arms across the chest; it becomes so severe that he is obliged to take Bryonia, which relieves him, but the side remains very sore; after another dose of Lactic acid, the pain and soreness returned; is compelled to keep the arm close to the side to avoid pain; it is very difficult to put his coat on or off; repeated in subsequent proving. Pain in the back part of right breast at intervals during the morning, till 11 A.M. when the pain extended to the axilla, which feels sore to the touch (4th day). Pain in the back of the left breast, two or three times during the day (6th day). Sharp pain in right breast at 11 A.M. (6th day). Sharp pain darted through the lower part of the right breast at 1 P. M. and continued at intervals during the afternoon (4th day). Sharp pain in back part of the left breast during the afternoon; at 6 P. M. a similar pain the right breast, after which it felt sore to the touch; soon passed away (2nd day).

Heart and Pulse

Precordium. The heart-sounds were clear (6th day). Slight depression and constriction in the cardiac region; relieved by bending the chest forward; in the forenoon (2nd day) and repeated. Sharp pain around the heart, causing palpitation, a few minutes after 11.30 A.M.; lasts till 2 P. M. (2nd day). Pulse. The pulse rose 12 beats (after 3 days). The pulse was 102 (6th day). Pulse 98, full and soft. Pulse 96, full and soft. Pulse 90 and full (3rd day). Pulse 90, feverish (3rd day). Pulse 62, small and feeble (2nd day, half an hour after a dose).

Neck and Back.

Rheumatic pain in the right side of the neck and right breast, worse from stooping the head; continued about an hour (6th day). Great distress in the region of the kidneys (10th day). Pain in the lower part of the back and head all night; the pain extended to the shoulders, especially the right. Pain in the small of the back at 11 A.M.; extends up the left shoulder and side of the neck did not last long in the neck and shoulder, but continued in the back all days (2nd day). Pain in the small of the back about noon; continued all night (4th and 5th day). Pain in the small of the back all night, could hardly lie in bed (1st and 2nd day); extends to the shoulders (3rd day). Pain in the region of the kidneys, from 11 to 12 A.M. (4th day). On retiring, a severe pain in the left lumbar region, more a weak feeling, which is relieved by turning on to the side (1st and 2nd day). Aching in the lower part of the back, from 3 to 10 P. M. (1st day). Sharp pain across the small of the back and shoulders, worse when walking (5th day). Sore pain across the lower part of the back all day (2nd day).

Extremities in General.

The attempt to take the acid was always followed by pains in the joints. Pains in the joints, in the evening (2nd day). Severe pain in various joints. Acute pains in the joints and flying pains about the limbs. After taking it for a week in May, he was laid up with such severe joint-pains that I was called to visit him and found him in bed with pains in his elbows, shoulders, ankles, knees, and, as he said, all over him. He had a bad night from pains in the joints, which disturbed him very much, and which came on suddenly after midnight (5th night); the next morning the metacarpophalangeal and first phalangeal articulations of the first and 2nd fingers of each hand were found to be red, swollen, hot, and painful; the slightest movement aggravated the pain, and he could not on this account pick up anything with his fingers; the acid mixture was stopped, and in the evening the pain in the knuckles was less, and the redness was diminished; they were, however, still stiff; no other joints were affected (6th day). Elbows and knees painful and stiff.

Superior Extremities.

Shoulder. Pain in the shoulder on moving the arm, with soreness in the side (3rd day). Rheumatic pains in both shoulders, running up the muscles of the neck to the mastoid process, and into the ears. Wrist. Slight rheumatic pains in the wrist-joint (half an hour). Flying pains about the joints for four days, after which he was disturbed at night by severe pain in the right wrist, which in the morning was red, swollen, painful, and hot and was a typical specimen of a rheumatic joint. Hand. Small joints of both hands, wrists, and in the last degree the elbows are red, swollen, and painful; they seem typical symptoms of acute rheumatic arthritis; in the evening both wrists, the small joints of the fingers and the elbows are all red, hot, swollen, tender, and painful (3rd day). Lactic acid was discontinued, the next day the joints were better. Pains returned in the knuckles in the evening; they were swollen, red, and tender. Fingers. Pain in the second joint of the right thumb, at 1 P. M. for an hour (2nd day). Index finger, right, swollen, two bright red spots on it, one between first and second, the other between second and third joints; the last itched once or twice during the day; from 2 to 10 P. M. it itched and burned like a bee sting; on the 5th day it was sore between the first and second joints, but not red; between the 2nd and 3rd joints red, but not sore; the red spot looked like a blister. Right index finger felt sore between the 1st and 2nd and also between the 2nd and 3rd joints; these pains continued during the proving, alternately appearing and disappearing.

Inferior Extremities.

Thigh. Pain in the thigh, and stinging in the sartorius muscle (3rd day). Soreness to touch along the track of the right sciatic nerve, on getting out of bed; last all day, pulsating constantly, but slightly (4th day). Knee. A swelling or redness of the knees or other joints. None of the joints were swollen except the right knee, which was faintly red, decidedly swollen, and very tender and painful; the other joints were simply stiff and painful on movement. Weakness of the knees, and stinging in the joints (3rd day). Great weakness in the knees on going downstairs feels for another step at the bottom, with vertigo (3rd day). He complained a good deal of pain in the knees, which had hitherto escaped (4th day). Pain in the knees when walking; they cripple forward (evening, 2nd day). Pain in the knee joints similar to neuralgic pains, at times extending to the toes, with a thrilling sensation as if one’s foot had been asleep (3rd day). Pain in the patella (3rd day). Rheumatic pains, dull yet sharp, in the knee-joint on moving the leg, at 7 P. M. (3rd day). Sharp pain in the right knee, rendering the joint stiff and walking painful (4th day). Stinging pain in the knees, and inside the thighs (4th day). Leg. Cramp in the calf of the leg early in the morning, before leaving the bed, also after rising a feeling of soreness in the part (3rd day). Foot. Sensation as though the feet were perspiring, and the stockings soaked full.

General symptoms

Objective. Great jerking of the muscles, and rigor all over the body, in evening (2nd day). Spasm of different muscles; it is difficult to eat or write (2nd day). Weakness on rising in the morning, with pain in the head (3rd day). Subjective. Sensitive to cold air, hoarse, etc. (2nd day). Very tired, felt as if he had walked a long distance, during and after motion (4th day). Felt weak during the morning (5th day). Felt sick all over; relieved by eating lunch, at noon (3rd day). Rheumatic pains in the bones, worse on motion (4th day).

Skin

Objective. Red spots on the left arm, left hip, left hand in the morning (3rd day); on the scrotum, with itching (3rd day). Several distinct bright-red blotches (as large as a raspberry) on the anterior portion of the lower third of the left leg, with slight burning, but no itching, relieved by cold, and by passing quickly from warm to cold, or cold to warm; the eruption is brightest at 8 A.M. fades in the middle of the day, and grew lighter again during the evening; brighter on pressure (1st and following days); eruption fades away from the periphery towards the center; the center remains bright till the 5th day, when it disappeared,; in the second proving, these deep-red blotches reappear on both legs, and extend almost over the thighs and lower limbs, to which they are confined. Elevations on the back like hives, with itching; also itching and redness on the other portions of the body (8th day). Eruptions on right arm and left leg, itch and burn. Papular eruption on the face and hands (4th day). Small blisters on the hands. Erysipelatous redness of left cheek and left side of nose, with small sore vesicles on nose, in the morning (3rd and 4th day). Subjective. Itching of the body on going to bed, on account of cold from the clothes (3rd day). Itching and burning on going out into cold air, with creeping and stinging in left half of body, left arm, hand, and leg, in the evening (2nd day), Itching is aggravated by scratching. Itching of the skin, relieved by scratching. Itching on different parts, chest, back, abdomen, and extremities (8th day). Itching and redness, not on exposed parts of the body.
