Heart and Pulse

Precordium. Sticking in the heart, not at all affected by respiration, lasting a quarter of an hour. Violent sticking in the heart, which extorts an involuntary cry, disappearing often for three, four, or even eight days, and then returning during the day as well as the night. Hearts Action. Hearts action remarkably slow and weak. Pulse. Pulse 148, strong and wiry (after two hours). Pulse regular, rather full, about 80. Slow pulse (after 1 drop); at another time slow pulse, reduced from 81 to 63 (after 1 drop in the evening ). Slow pulse the whole day, 60 to minute. Slow pulse, 47 to the minute, for two days. Pulse slow and labored. Slow, weak, pulse. Pulse small and suppressed.

Neck and Back

Neck. Rheumatic stiffness in the nape of the neck (after twenty-four hours). Rheumatic stiffness in the nape of the neck, lasting the whole afternoon. Back. Pains in the back (after one hour and a half). Pain in the back at night, so that she could scarcely lie, that extended over the left hip, became seated in the flank, and also involved the left inguinal region, so that she could scarcely become erect; the pain in the back was worse during rest than during motion (after thirty-six hours). Dorsal. Pain behind the left scapula, lasting an hour. Dull pain behind the right scapula, with a feeling as of a plug, at times throbbing, lasting all day (after one hour). Drawing tension between the shoulders. Pressive pain two inches beneath the right scapula. Some stitches coming and going between the scapulae. The scapulae are painful as if they had been beaten. A drawing pain in the upper posterior right side of the ribs, extending forward and causing a sticking above the mammary gland of the same side (after sixty hours). Lumbar. Pain in the lumbar vertebra like that usual before menstruation. Painfulness of the lumbar vertebra and both iliac crests, as if she had run a long distance; this painfulness or bruised feeling extended into the thighs and down to the calves, where it ended like an electric shock; a stiffness and inflexibility remain in the lumbar vertebra, in the morning. One of the upper lumbar vertebra pains as if suppurating, or as if the flesh were torn from it, and causes a sensation ( on standing up) as if something would fall out there. Violent pains in the lumbar vertebra like a suppuration, with pressure downward towards the rectum, as if flatus would pass, which does not follow, during menstruations, before this the pains in the back were relieved by motion. Pain in the small of the back, that almost made her sick, worse during rest than during motion. Pain in the small of the back that extends from below upwards, with heat in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. She lay in bed from 9 p. m. to 2 a. m. with some pain in small of back, internal chilliness, and violent pulsation in head, on account of which she could not sleep, and tossed about (after forty-eight hours). Labor like pains in small of back, causing ineffectual urging to stool, with distension of the abdomen ( after four days). Pain in the small of the back, as if she had stooped a great deal, aggravated by motion and by stooping. A burrowing in the small of the back, as if something would come out, during rest and motion (after six hours). Drawing pains in the small of the back, extending along the sacrum down into the rectum and vagina which cause spasmodic contractive pain mingled with stitches; the pains are relieved on standing up, return at intervals (like labor pains); after such attacks, leucorrhoea looking like milk and water flows from her by a paroxysms (after twenty four hours). Pains in the small of the back in the morning as she woke, which became more violent after rising, extending forward to the abdomen, and causing a pressure outward in the genitals and extending down in to the thighs, causing anxiety and trembling through the whole body, with internal chilliness like false labor pains in the external genitals mingled with stitches relieved by lying down, worse when sitting and walking (after a few days). pain in the small of the back as if broken it extended up to between the shoulder blades, so that she could not move the arms without pain (as if a band were between the shoulders), which made stooping difficult, lasting the whole day. A sticking pain in the external muscles in the region of the left kidney.

Extremities in General.

Weary and weak in the limbs as if she had walked a long distance. She feels sick in all the limbs, as if she were going to be attacked with catarrh, Sensation of heaviness, with weariness as from sleep, in all limbs, (480.) All the limbs ache as if beaten. All the limbs feel beaten as if she had run a long distance. Jerking and pinching pains in all the joints. Tingling and whirring in the limbs,.

Superior Extremities.

Shoulder. Pains in the shoulders, as if they had been uncovered at night. Pain in the right shoulder on moving it, lasting the whole day. An acute drawing on the posterior portion of the shoulders. Pains in both shoulders as if they were pressed against sharp corners. Stitches in the posterior portion of the shoulder-joint, which shoot through the whole arms to the fingers; in the fingers they cause a sensation as if asleep, with a powerless sensation, and actual loss of power, so that she cannot hold anything tightly with the hands as usual; when there are no stitches, there is a jerking in the hands with crawling and heat in them (after thirty hours). Stitches in the right shoulder about 4 p.m. half an hour later, several stitches in the left side of the chest, and about 6 p. m. very violent drawing pain in the left upper foot (after 3 days). Arm. Paralytic heaviness of the right upper arm. Dull, almost gnawing pain in the bone of the right upper arm. Pinching pain in the inner side of the left upper arm. Elbow. A cramp like sensation in the tip of the right elbow while writing, so that she is almost unable to write (after half an hour). Periodic pains in both elbow-joints as if the ligaments were drawn together and were too short. A pain on the inner side and lower portion of the upper arm, as if she had bruised it, noticed only on touch (after forty eight hours). A spasmodic bubbling like pain on the inner and lower portion of the left elbow-joint returning at various intervals, in the afternoon (after eight hours). Forearm. Paralytic like pain shooting like lightning towards the left hand so that she constantly lets everything fall (after twenty four hours). A cramplike pain in the region of the lower portion of the left ulna, that extends into the fingers. Drawing pains in the left forearm, extending to the fingers, painful drawing in the left arm along the ulna. (500.) On the lower posterior portion of the right arm, in the muscles of the ulna, a painful drawing extending towards the fingers, so that she cannot grasp anything as usual with the hands, and giving rise to a paralytic sensation; it returns every half an hour, or every hour. Violent drawing in the left forearm Hand. A fine sticking pain on the back of the left hand between the thumb and index finger (after one hour). Fingers. Deadness of the first phalanges of all the fingers; they look quite whiter and have no sensation. The two first phalanges of all the fingers go to sleep in the morning, a quarter of an hour after rising; crawling in them as from ants, and they look quite white like dead hands, she is obliged to put the right index finger into the hot water, because no sensation, at all would return to it (after forty eight hours). A paralytic like pain in the left index finger, which occurs during rest and ceases on motion, Drawing pains in the right ring finger, Drawing pains in the tips of the fingers of the left hand, with a feeling as though they were swollen, The left thumb pains as if sprained and stiff. Pain as from a sprain in the second joint of the left thumb. (510.) Pain in the ball of the left index finger as if something had been stuck into it and it would suppurate.

Inferior Extremities.

Weakness of the left leg; he had no steadiness in it. Drawing tearing and sticking pains, now in the right calf, now about the knee, now in the region of the hip-joint lasting five minutes, then disappearing for as long a time, and then again returning, the pains always appeared with great violence, so that she started every time, together with itching and burning in the eyes, so that she was obliged to rub them; afterwards there was burning in the eyes, and much accumulation of fatty matter in the inner canthi, so that she must frequently cleanse them. Hip. A pain in the left hip-joint as though it were dislocated; if he stands on the right foot there is a sensation in the left limb as if the foot were too long. Thigh. A painful tension in the fascia lata of the left thigh Tensive pain in the upper portion of the thigh, as if she had taken a long walk, especially felt while walking and on stooping. A pain in the muscles of the thigh three inches above the left patella, as if they were too short, worse on stooping and when walking, not aggravated by touch or external pressure, A drawing pain as if in the bone extending from the right ischium down into the middle of the thigh, on the outer side, with chilliness (after eight hours),. Drawing pains extending from the head of the right femur into the knee-joint so that she can scarcely ascend steps noticed more during rest than motion, and lasting several days. Painful drawing mingled with stitches commencing in the thigh and extending; through the limb to the sole of the foot, worse in the right leg and very much aggravated by motion. Cramp like drawing extending from the lumbar vertebrae forward and down the thighs. It is quite similar to labor pains with great uneasiness in the whole body, as if she were bout to have a labor. A pain in the middle of the muscles of the left thigh as if she had received a hard blow or bruise worse while sitting (after twenty four hours). Dull gnawing pain on the outer side of the left thigh and leg, worse while sitting (after ten hours). A jerking pain three inches above the left knee, in the fleshy parts; during rest,. A piercing jerking in the middle of the left thigh. During rest (after eight hours). Knee. Weakness in the knee-joints so that they gave way during motion, lasting an hour (after forty eight hours). The parts from the middle of the left thigh to the middle of the left leg are painful, as if there had been a tearing in them and they were stiff, on motion. A tensive pain in the muscles from just above the knee to three inches above; the parts were painful to pressure with the hand, as if the flesh had been beaten loose; it was not felt during rest; worse in the right than in the left leg (after second day), Pain as from a sprain in the left knee-joint so that he could not stand on that leg alone, it also had a sensation as if it would give way. A sharp pressive pain beneath the right patella, Tearing, boring and sticking pains in the left patella, which began towards evening, with chilliness, and continued incessantly the whole night until morning, when they disappeared). Jerking tearing in the right knee during rest (after a quarter of an hour). Leg. Heaviness in the legs from the knees during motion, extending from the knees to the ankles, but especially in the calves; not during rest. A contractive pain like a cramp in the right calf, extending down to the malleoli (after five days). A paralytic- like drawing through the left leg, pain as from a sprain in the left tendo Achillis. Tearing in the legs, extending from the ankles up to the knees, and causing a tension in the calves (after sixty hours). A throbbing like a boil in the legs from the knees to the toes, worse in the soles of the feet, during rest and motion. A painless jerking through the left leg, that throws the foot upward. Ankle. A twisting pain from within outward in the right external malleolus, during rest. Sticking in the right ankle worse on motion than during rest (after forty eight hours). Foot. The left foot is somewhat swollen,. Oedematous swelling of the foot (after six days). The feet are swollen from the calves to the toes, the left more than the right; the swelling was oedematous, looked white; the foot was constantly cold and heavy so that she had to make an exertion in order to move it, Heaviness of the feet while walking, not at all felt during rest (after thirty six hours). Several successive stitches in the right ankle that extend to the toes and involve the whole foot (after thirty six hours). Burning in the soles of the feet from 2 p. m. till 2 or 3 a. m.; these pains return for four successive days about the same time (after fifty two hours). A working in the soles of the feet as if she had walked a long distance; with great weakness; the weakness was felt more in the left than in the right side. Burning, drawing, and sticking, commencing about the ankles, extending through the soles, of the feet and toes the pains are worse in the soles, and are there during both rest and motion; they begin in the forenoon and cease only in the afternoon (after four days). Tearing-drawing and sticking pains starting from the heels, extending through the soles of the feet to the toes, during rest and motion; these pains began towards evening, lasted till she went to bed, when she feel asleep with them, and on awaking in the morning and endeavoring to step, the heels felt like balls, which disappeared during the forenoon, A feeling of suppuration in the soles of the feet (after four days). Violent stitches in the left heel on moving it, so that she started up and was obliged to remain standing.
