Part 6- Complications of Diabetes Mellitus

A blood glucose test in a blood sample taken from your veins will be low.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause. People with diabetes will need to learn how to treat and prevent low blood sugar levels.

If hypoglycemia is caused by an insulinoma (insulin-releasing tumor), surgery to remove the tumor is the best treatment.

Complications

Severe hypoglycemia is a medical emergency that may cause seizures and permanent brain damage. Severe hypoglycemia in which you become unconscious is also called insulin shock.

Calling your health care provider

If signs of low blood sugar do not improve after you have eaten a snack that contains sugar:

  • Get a ride to the emergency room, or
  • Call the local emergency number

Do not drive when your blood sugar is low.

Get medical help right away for a person with diabetes or low blood sugar who:

  • Becomes less alert
  • Cannot be woken up

Chronic Complications:

2-1 Psychiatric symptoms especially insomnia, depression, suicidal thoughts and attempts are very common in diabetics. Diabetes mellitus is considered to be a psychosomatic disorder. Unfortunately they are usually neglected by our respectful colleagues in Conventional Medicine. All people with chronic diseases or symptoms may suffer various degrees of depression and suicidal thoughts and attempts. It is our duty as physicians to listen to them carefully and pay attention to their emotional problems.

Many of my diabetic patients complain medical doctors because of ignoring their presence as a human being. They say that most of their specialist physicians just prescribe routine medicines for them and do not listen to their talk and some of them do not even look at them directly and kindly. Homeopathy as a holistic medicine does not allow us to behave our patients this way, instead it teaches us to consider them as a whole.

Most patients experience inner calmness and become relaxed after their 1st interview at my clinic. Listening carefully to them and writing what they say is my first duty at the 1st session. They feel a friendly and calm atmosphere and have enough time to say so many secrets that they do not dare to say anywhere else.

Homeopathic remedies can create inner calmness, joy, more self confidence and better communication with their families and their society. In fact they complete our first step i.e. a friendly and humanistic interview. Thus they can handle their responsibilities more effectively and manage their anger. They enjoy their life much more than before.

Such deep changes lead to an overall improvement of their physical problems like high plasma glucose, frequency, paresthesia and general weakness.

They feel more energetic and more powerful than before. One of my patients named M.M. a man aged 61 suffered a vast heart ischemia and infarction. He had a very low self confidence and no incentive to communicate with other people because of his partner’s inhumanly behavior with him that had stolen his money and had made him poor, he suffered dyspnea if he walked 2-3 hundred meters.

After being interviewed in the 1st session, I told him I would help him get through his condition successfully if he follows my suggestions. He took lachesis as his 1st prescription and did so. After about 5 months of homeopathic treatment he could walk 1-2 hours daily with his family members.

2-2 Cardiovascular complications; they include coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, peripheral arterial disease leading to diabetic ulcers and gangrene, nephropathy, retinopathy, and possibly neuropathy and cardiomyopathy. Because of the aging of the population and an increasing prevalence of obesity and sedentary life habits in the United States, the prevalence of diabetes is increasing, according to the American Heart Association (A.H.A.).

Thus, diabetes must take its place alongside the other major risk factors as important causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In fact, from the point of view of cardiovascular medicine, it may be appropriate to say, “diabetes is a cardiovascular disease.” In most cases diabetics do not experience typical chest pain and thus may face a silent death.

2-3 Eye disorders; Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in American adults, according to the website http://www.nei.nih.gov. It is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina.

***Patrice O’Neal dies of diabetic complications

Stand-up comedian Patrice O’Neal died at the age of 41. The comic, whose last performance was on the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen, died of complications of diabetes. O’Neal suffered a stroke in October, due to his overweight and vascular derangements caused by D.M. He died on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 according to www.celebritydiagnosis.com/in-the-news.

Gregg Hughes (Opie), of the Opie and Anthony Sirius XM radio show, confirmed the comic’s death.

O’Neal was a frequent guest on the broadcasts.

“Yes it’s true that our pal Patrice O’Neal has passed away. The funniest and best thinker i’ve ever known PERIOD. #devastated.” he said.

Diabetes mellitus leads to severe atherosclerosis in different arteries. It causes neurovascular disorders like paresthesia, numbness, foot drop, ulcers and gangrene in one’s extremities, especially lower limbs.

In eyes retinal hemorrhage and dim vision and finally blindness may occur. D.M. is one of the main causes of blindness.

Renal failure is a very common complication in diabetics comparing normal population. Albuminuria occurs before renal insufficiency in the afflicted patients.

Cardiovascular disorders especially heart infarction is of special importance, since it is usually painless and chest pain is almost absent in spite of severe vascular pathology. Thus patients may even die of heart attacks suddenly. Patrice O’Neal is a very good example of cardiovascular disorder in diabetics.
