  Common Name: Blue Cohosh.

Introduction

Caulophyllum thalictroides. Michaux.

Natural order: Berberidaceae.

Preparation: Trituration and tincture of the root.

Head.

Dulness of the head (3rd day). Frequent spell of vertigo (3rd day). Dull headache (2nd day). Slight frontal headache (2nd & 3rd days. Severe frontal headache (after 5 hours). Dull frontal headache (2nd day). Dull frontal headache, with a contracted feeling of the skin of the forehead (after 2 hours). Very hard dull frontal headache (after 2 hours). Very hard pains in the forehead, with a sensation of as of needles being stuck into the forehead (after one-and-forty hours). By spells there is a very severe pain in the temples that produces a feeling as if both temples would be crushed together (2nd day).

Eye.

Severe drawing pains over the left eye (2nd day). Eyes aching, with a feeling of something under the lids (3rd day). Profuse secretion of tears (3rd day). Profuse flow of tears (2nd day).

Nose.

Drawing pains in the nose (2nd day).

Mouth.

Teeth all feeling sore and elongated (3rd day). Tongue coated white (4th day).

Throat.

Distress in the fauces, that causes frequent inclination to swallow (after 2 hours).

Stomach.

Canine hunger (4th day). Wants to drink a great deal of water (4th day). Empty eructations (3rd day). Frequent gulping up of very sour, bitter fluid (3rd day). Distress in the stomach and bowels, with drawing pains in the right hypochondrium (2nd day). Slight distress in the stomach (3rd day). Good deal of distress in the stomach and small intestines (2nd day). Good deal of pain and distress in the stomach and umbilicus (2nd day).

Slight burning distress in the stomach (3rd day). Frequent slight colicky pain in the stomach and umbilicus (2nd day).

Abdomen.

Drawing pains in the right side over the liver (2nd day).

Frequent slight pain in the umbilicus (4th day). Slight dull pain in the umbilicus when moving, relieved by emissions of flatus (3rd day). Frequent colicky pains in the umbilicus, relieved by emissions of flatus (2nd day). Severe colicky pains every few minutes in the umbilicus (after 5 hours). Slept well until 1 A.M., then awoke with a great rumbling in the bowels, and a very urgent desire for stool (3rd night).

Stool.

Natural but hard stool (3rd day). Natural but dark stool (2nd day). Soft stool, very white (5th day, 7 A.M).. Another rather soft stool, followed by slight pain in the umbilicus (3rd day).

Stool mostly of water, that ran a perfect stream from my bowels; passed a great quantity. There was no pain (3rd night, 1 A.M)..

Sexual Organs.

Every few minutes, sharp, stinging pain in the glans penis (after two hours).

Neck and Back.

Very severe drawing pain in the sternocleidomastoid muscle, that draws the head to the left side (after 5 hours). Slight backache (4th day). Dull backache (after 5 hours).

Slight dull backache (2nd day). Dull pains in the lumbar region (2nd day). Dull backache in the lumbar region (after 2 hours).

Extremities in General.

Constant flying pains in the arms and legs, first in one part and then in another, remaining only two or three minutes at a time in a place (after 2 hours). Restless night; fingers, ankles, feet, and toes pained so much (4th night). Drawing pains in the fingers, legs, and feet (2nd day). Drawing pains in the elbows, wrists, fingers, knees, ankles, feet and toes (4th day). Drawing pains in the fingers, ankles, feet, and toes, but more especially in the toes (3rd day). Severe drawing pains in the joints of the arms and legs (after 5 hours). Severe drawing pains in hips, knees, ankles and feet, wrists and fingers (2nd day). Constant and severe drawing pains in the wrists and fingers, ankles, feet and toes (2nd day).

Superior Extremities.

Elbows and wrists ache (after 2 hours). Severe pain in the wrists and joints of fingers (2nd day). Fingers are quite stiff (4th day). Fingers are very stiff (4th night). Drawing pains in the fingers (2nd day). Much pain in the joints of the fingers; they look red and are very stiff; closing the hand is very painful (3rd day). Shutting and hand produced severe cutting pains in the second joints of all the fingers; they were very stiff (2nd day).

Inferior Extremities.

All the joints crack frequently when walking or turning (4th day). Drawing pains in the thighs, knees, legs and ankles (after 2 hours). Severe drawing pains in the inside of the left thigh (after 2 hours). Feeling quite well, excepting the knees are quite weak when walking (3rd day). Very sharp pains in the left knee-joint, inside (after 2 hours). Knees feeling very weak when walking (3rd day). Drawing pains in the knees and toes, very sharp by spells (3rd day). Drawing pains in the knees, ankles, feet and toes (3rd day). Severe drawing pains in the legs and feet, but more especially in the feet (2nd day). The left ankle pains very severely (2nd day). The ankle and toes of the left foot are very painful (after 5 hours). Severe drawing pains in the ankles and feet (2nd day). The pains are very severe in the feet (2nd day). Walking produces severe pain in the metatarsal bones (3rd day). Drawing pains in the toes (4th day).

General Symptoms.

Feeling weak and nervous (3rd day).

Sleep and Dreams.

Head a restless night (2nd night). Slept well until 3 A.M., after which he was restless (1st night).

Fever.

Skin was hot and dry (2nd day).

Conditions.– Aggravation.

(After 3 A.M)., Restless.

(Evening), The symptoms.

(Open air), The symptoms.

(Coffee), Seems to aggravate.

(Walking), Pains in metatarsal bones.

Amelioration.

(Emission of flatus), Pains in umbilicus.

(In room), Troubles which arise in the open air disappear, except pressure in forehead.

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
In 1881 Allen published A Critical Revision of the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica.
