Inferior Extremities

The gait is tottering, as if caused by some external power. The limbs cannot be stretched out on account of tension and contraction in the groin. The right leg as far as the toes goes to sleep at night, after lying down, on lying on that side, with a feeling as if the leg were longer than natural. Stiffness of the limbs, after sitting. Hip. Pinching in the right hip, when walking. Stitches in the left hip, when sitting. Thigh. Great weariness in the thighs, before and during menstruation. Boring and drawing in the upper part of the right thigh- bone, after a restless night. Cramp in the thighs and legs at night. Drawing and tearing in the muscles of the thighs. Fine burning, transient stitches, here and there, in the thighs and small of the back, the whole day. Severe tearing stitches in the middle of the right thigh on the inner side, when standing, in the evening. Tearing in the thighs below both hips from morning till evening, though worse in the forenoon and when sitting. Tearing in the outer side of the thigh at night; it disappeared on rising. Painful tearing while standing, as if in the marrow of the left thigh; disappears while sitting (during menstruation). Twitching pain in the thighs. Knee. A sensation in the bend of the right knee on walking, as if the tendons were too short; it disappears during sitting. Pain, as if screwed together, in the right knee, when standing, with a sensation as if the leg would be bent together, in the evening. Cramp in the right knee, when walking. Painless drawing in the bend of the right knee; it pains when stretched out; disappears after long-continued motion. Sensitive stitches in the hollow of the left knee, while walking. Tearing in the knee at night, which disappeared on rising. Tearing and crawling stitches in the right knee, that after rubbing extend down into the tibia, which is only transiently relieved by rubbing. Tearing above the right knee, also above the left, as if in the bone, which is only transiently relieved by rubbing. Sore pain in the knee on bending it, day and night. Sore pain in the right knee, worse when walking. Leg. The legs as far as the calves go to sleep, during the day. Sudden pain at night, on waking and turning the leg in bed, as if the legs were broken, after which the leg was as heavy as lead. Cramp in the forepart of the lower leg near the tibia, when walking. Painless drawing up the left leg at night. Painful stitches in the right leg, when rising up after kneeling; they shoot through the whole body and make her start. Tearing in the right leg, especially in the knee and ankle. Tearing in the lower part of the left tibia, and also on the outer surface of the right leg, and afterwards in the great toes. Pain in the tibiae at night, which had disappeared in the morning on waking. Jerklike drawing in the tibia. Pressure in the tibia, while walking. Bruised pain in the tibia, while walking; the pain was intermitting, with tension in the calves. Painful cramp in the calves after walking. Painful tension in the calves, when walking. Cramp in the calves, in the morning, for several days. Cramp in the calves disturbed the quiet sleep at night. Painful contraction of the tendo Achillis, frequently repeated, in the evening (third day). Ankle. Loss of power in the ankle, while walking, so that it turned over. A feeling of stiffness in the ankle, in the morning, on rising. Inflammatory swelling of the feet, which begins on one toe. Swelling and tension of the feet. The feet give out while walking, as from weakness in the joints. Very cold feet from 9 A.M. till 3 P.M. The feet burn while walking, and swell while sitting. A stitch like crawling in the feet, as though going to sleep, in the morning. Tension in the back of the foot, as if the tendons were too short; the next day the place is sore and sensitive to touch. Sharp stitches penetrating the left sole. Drawing and tearing in the tendons of the right heel. Pain, as of suppuration, in the heels. Toes. Swelling of the ball of the great toe in the morning; there is much heat in it, and it pains as if it had been frozen and ulcerated. Violent cutting-burning in the toes, especially in the little toes. Frequent cramp in the toes during the day; while walking in an uneven path it seems as if they would give out. Pain, as if sprained, in the last toe-joints, while walking and on every motion. Tearing in the right great toe. It becomes easily sore between the toes. Corns appear, which are painful to touch. Stinging in a corn, for many days.

Generalities

Spasm; vertigo; she screamed, opened the mouth, and bent backwards and to the right side, and threw up the hands. She came near falling, opened the mouth, and raised her eyes, with heat over the whole body, sweat on the face, and whining mood. Indolence, and disinclination for mental or physical labor, the whole day. He becomes tired from eating. Tired and sleepy, after walking. Walking is very fatiguing; she soon became weary, especially in the hypochondrium. Very much fatigued, on waking in the morning, after a good sleep. In the morning on rising, very weary, with such sadness that she had to cry. He eats and drinks, but still becomes weaker every day. Weak and bruised, especially in the lower limbs, in the morning. General weakness in the forenoon, even to sinking down. After the appearance of the menses, such great weakness that she could scarcely speak, with yawning and stretching. Weakness and want of energy of the body, with confusion of the head. Great prostration in the whole body, at night, as if bruised. Great exhaustion in body and mind after an emission, and very apprehensive that something evil would happen. He is easily exhausted, while walking. Uneasiness and hastiness. On account of anxiety he was obliged to move constantly back and forth on his chair. Less sensitive than usual to the cold winter air (secondary effect). Pressive pain in the joints and muscles. Stitches in the scar of a burn. Throbbing and biting in the whole body, worse in the evening. All the joints of the body feel bruised, and pulled apart, and powerless.

Skin

Eruptions. Coppery eruption on the face. Hard, elevated, itching spots across the forearm near the wrist. Hard pimples upon the forehead. A large number of pimples on the face, without sensation. Eruption, like red spots, on the cheeks. Small, red pimples on the chin, with yellowish tips. Several small pimples on the wrist, on the neck, and on the back of the foot, which itch severely, with burning-itching after scratching; they disappear after three days. White itching pimples on the backs of the hands, which, after scratching, burn and become red. Moist. Blisters on the lips. He becomes easily excoriated on the nates after riding, after which large blisters appear. Pustular. Eruption of small pustules on the left cheek and forehead. A boil in the anus (after sixteen days). Sensations. Biting in the whole body like flea-bites, which always change to another place after scratching. The skin of the face is painful, especially on the cheeks, and about the mouth and chin (after shaving). Dryness and desquamation of the skin on the tip of the nose. Unpleasant tension of the skin of the limbs, with a feeling of burning or icy coldness. Itching spread over the whole body, especially in the evening, in bed. Itching in the upper lid, which disappears on scratching. Itching on the tip of the nose, not relieved by scratching. Itching on the upper surface of the right forearm, where, after three days, an itching eruption appears, which covers a large surface. Itching on the backs of the hands and fingers, for many days. Itching in the warts of the fingers. Severe itching in the toes, which had been frozen (after twenty- four days).

Sleep and Dreams

Sleepiness. Sleepiness, with frequent yawning, the whole forenoon. Sleepiness, with photophobia, in the evening (first days). He seems as if in a slumber the whole day, and on account of it, indolent, hard of hearing, with obscured vision, fretful and gloomy. Sleeplessness. He was unable to sleep at night on account of heat and restlessness. She tossed about the whole night, anxious and restless, with finding rest, with frequent waking. She was unable to sleep in the evening, and had generally only very light sleep. Was unable to sleep at night until 5 A.M., and was refreshed after waking from a two hours’ sleep. Very restless sleep, with frequent waking. Very restless at night; could find no quiet place in the bed. Restless night; sleep had left by 2 1/2 A.M., on account of internal uneasiness. Very uneasy sleep; he was very much excited and was unable to sleep before 2 o’clock. Starting up on going to sleep as if she would fall. Frequent starting up on falling asleep in the evening. Loud talking in the sleep. Groaning in the sleep. Crying at night in the sleep and sobbing on waking. Dreams. Sleep full of vivid fancies. Very vivid dreams at night. Vivid dreams about scientific subjects; in his thoughts he made literary compositions and spoke aloud. Vivid frightful dreams, for seven nights in succession. Very fanciful and confused dreams at night, so that he scarcely slept at all. Anxious dreams at night with screaming and crying, followed by sad and then by voluptuous dreams, with emissions. Dreams of murders.

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
In 1881 Allen published A Critical Revision of the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica.
