      Mountain Laurel. HERING. Ericaceae.

Mind

      In a recumbent posture, the mental faculties and memory are perfect, but on every attempt to move, vertigo.

Anxiety with the palpitation.

Toward evening and the next afternoon very cross.

Sensorium

      Vertigo: with headache, blindness, pains in the limbs and weariness; while stooping and long down, with aching of the face. Neuralgia.

A cracking in the head frightens him, if ends like a sound in ears like blowing of a horn.

Inner Head

      Headache internally, with sensation when turning, of something loose in head, diagonally across top.

Sensation of heat in the head in the morning.

Pain in the forehead in the morning when walking, after rising, and then increasing.

Pressing pain on a small spots on the right side of the head.

The headache is worse in the evening and in the open air.

A shuddering without coldness commenced with cracking; as if surcharged in electricity.

Pain over the right eye; giddiness; eyes weak and watery.

Dulness in the head; headache; backache.

aching in the forehead, followed by rending in bones of right of left side of face; or, shooting downward into eye-teeth; or, moving backward down the neck and outwardly on both sides; succeeded by pain in left shoulder; or rending in bones of legs to feet.

Outer Head

      Neuralgia each afternoon, becoming worse at night; pain from back of neck up over scalp to top of head and temples, also affecting face, mostly on right side. Parts tender to touch; pain shooting; sometimes in spots; better cold; worse heat.

Facial pains after zoster.

Menses regular put painful.

Eyes

      Everything is black before the eye when he looks downward; with nausea and eructations of wind (in the morning).

Dull, weak eyes.

Pressure in the right eye (evenings); also above right eye.

Sensation of stiffness around the eyes and in the eyelids.

Stitches in the eyes (ears, fingers, feet).

Itching in the eyes, and when rubbing them they sting.

The eye symptoms are worse in evening and in open air.

Ears

      Stitches in and behind the right ear; in neck and thighs ( at night),.

Nose

      Coryza, with increased sense of smell; with sneezing, Dulness, headache and hoarseness.

Tearing in root of nose and nasal bones, with nausea.

Face

      Face red, with the throbbing headache.

Anxious expression of countenance. Rheumatism of heart.

Flushing of the face, with vertigo. Neuralgia.

Prosopalgia, right sided; pains rending; agoniZing; stupefying or threatening delirium.

Face, at night, itches.

Roughness of cheek (during every summer).

Lower Face

      Lips swollen, dry and stiff (morning).

Cracked lips, with dry skin.

Stinging in jaw-bones.

Teeth

      Teeth tender, with neuralgia of face and head.

Pressing pain in the molars, late in the evening.

Tongue etc.

      Bitter taste, with nausea, less after eating.

Tongue white, dry.

Stitches in the tongue.

Tongue sore, left side; hurts when talking in the evening.

Mouth

      Tingling in salivary glands, immediately after eating, with sense of fermentation in oesophagus and copious salivation.

Sublingual salivary gland inflamed.

Throat

      Throat feels swollen.

Sensation as if a ball were rising in the throat.

Sensation of dryness in throat, with difficult deglutition and thirst.

Great dryness of throat, with aching pains; the dryness causing frequent cough, Chronic syphilitic sore throat.

Pressure in the throat; stitches in the eyes and nausea.

Eating and Drinking

      After eating: feels better every way.

After eating:,. Drinking wine:.

Pains relieved by food. Neuralgia.

Nausea and Vomiting

      Nausea, everything becomes black before the eyes, with pressure in the throat, incarcerated flatulence, oppression of breathing, and rheumatic pains in limbs.

Wine relieves the vomiting.

Stomach

      Pressure in the pit of the stomach, like a marble; worse when sitting in a stooping position better when sitting erect, with the sensation as if something would be pressed off below the pit of the stomach.

Eructations of wind. Angina pectoris. Gastralgia.

Crampy pain with eructation of wind, palpitation Gastralgia.

Pit of stomach sore to touch.

Hypochondria

      Pains in the region of the liver.

Abdomen

      Increased flatus, with nausea.

Sensation of weakness in the abdomen, extending to the throat; relieved by eructation.

Sudden pain in paroxysms,. across abdomen above umbilicus, from lower border of liver, downward to ward the left, then ceasing in right side; worse from motion, better when sitting up, abdominal neuralgia.

Stool etc.

      Stool like much; easily discharged, ‘ as if glazed, followed by pressure on the rectum.

Diarrhoea, with dulness, dizziness, weariness, nausea and bellyache.

Urine

      Frequent micturition of large quantities of yellow urine.

Albuminuria; also with pains in lower limbs.

Female Sexual Organs

      Menses eight to twenty-four days too soon; during menses pain in limbs, loins, back and interior of thighs.

Suppressed menses with severe neuralgic pains throughout the whole body.

Leucorrhoea yellowish; one week after menses; symptoms are prominent then.

Larynx

      Pressure as if some one squeezed the throat with thumb and finger.

Noise as from spasm in the glottis when breathing.

Hoarse with coryza.

Breathing

      difficult and oppressed breathing; the throat feels swollen; nausea; Rheumatism.

Oppressed and short, which obliges him to breathe quickly, involuntarily.

Dyspnoea and pain. Angina pectoris.

Cough

      Cough caused by scraping in the throat.

Expectoration easy, smooth, grey; tasting putrid and saltish.

Frequent cough caused by dryness in the throat:.

Lungs

      Pain in the chest as a sprain.

Shooting through chest above heart, into shoulder blades; with pain in left arm.

Heart Pulse

      Wandering, rheumatic pains in region of heart; shooting pains above heart through to scapula.

When articular rheumatism has been treated externally, and cardiac symptoms ensue.

When the pains suddenly leave limbs and go to heart.

Hypertrophy and valvular insufficiency, or thickening after rheumatism.

Severe pain in cardiac region, with slow, small pulse.

Hypertrophy with dilatation and aortic obstruction.

Paroxysm of anguish about the heart, dyspnoea, febrile excitement; rheumatic endocarditis, with consequent hypertrophy and valvular disease.

Attacks of angina pectoris. Fatty degeneration of heart.

Palpitation, dyspnoea, pain in limbs, stitch in lower part of chest; right sided prosopalgia.

Palpitation, up into throat, after going to bed; trembling all over; worse lying on left side; better lying on the back; anxiety.

Palpitation. Gastralgia.

Pressure like a marble from epigastrium toward the heart, with a strong, quick heart-beat. Every beat has a strumming, as it would burst, along sternum to throat. The third or fourth beat is harder, and is followed by an intermission.

Pulse slow, weak; arms feel weak; pulse scarcely perceptible, limbs cold.

Slow, small pulse. Hypertrophy of heart.

Pulse slow and feeble. Angina pectoris.

Remarkable slowness of the pulse, in the minute. Neuralgia.

Quickened but weak pulse. Rheumatism of heart.

Pulse only slightly accelerated and in many instances slow. Acute rheumatism.

Outer Chest

      Pleuritis falsa in winter season.

Neck Back

      Pain proceeded from the neck, which was tender to the touch. Neuralgia.

Violent pain in the upper three dorsal vertebrae, extending through the shoulder-blades.

Sensation of lameness in the back, evening in bed.

Shooting, stabbing pain from the heart through to the left scapula, causing violent beating of the heart. Rheumatic affection of heart.

Constant pain in spine, sometimes worse in lumbar region, with great heat and burning.

Muscles of neck sore to touch and on moving them.

Upper Limbs

      Pain from the neck down the right arm to the little or fourth finger. Neuralgia.

pain in the right shoulder: also in deltoids, worse i right.

Stitches in the lower part of the left shoulder-blade.

Rheumatic pain in the arms (right).

Cracking in the allow-joint.

Stitches in the heads.

The hands feels as if they had been sprained.

Pain in the left wrist, causing the hand to feel paralyzed.

Erysipelatous eruption on hands and extending further.

Weakness in the arms; the pulse being slow.

Lower Limbs

      Tearing pain from hip down leg to feet. Stitches externally on knee; in feet, soles. toes, left big toe.

Sensation of weakness in the calves.

The feet feel sprained.

Limbs in General

      The rheumatism often attacks the heart, and generally goes from the upper to the lower parts; pains shift suddenly.

The rheumatic pains are mostly in the upper arms and lower parts of legs; and are worse when going to sleep.

Position etc.

      Recumbent posture: motion:, Stooping: turning: Sitting stopped:; erect:, Lying on left side: 2; on back: In bed:. Ascending stairs: Exertion: Looking down: Walking after rising: Talking:.

Pains worse on the least motion. Acute rheumatism.

Pains worse by sitting bent, yet a feeling as if to do so was necessary, but relieved by sitting or standing upright. Gastralgia.

Nerves

      Weariness in all muscles.

Shuns all exertion, can hardly go up stairs.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
