ARGENTUM NITRICUM



Child is very fond of sugar, but diarrhoea results from eating

it.

Constipation aggravates every complaint; alternates with diarrhoea; stool very dry. Epilepsy.

Taenia or thread worms; the latter, especially with much itching at the anus.

Urine

      Acute pain about the kidneys, extending down the ureters to bladder; worse from the slightest touch or motion even deep inspiration.

Ulcerative pain in middle of urethra as from a splinter.

Urine dark red, no albumen; deposits red crystals of uric aid.

Urine passed unconsciously and uninterruptedly.

Incontinence of urine at night; also by day.

Urging to urinate; urine passes less easily and freely.

Urine burns while passing urethra feels as if swollen with feeling as if the last drops remained behind; profuse purulent urethral discharge.

Stream of urine spreads asunder.

Bleeding of urethra; painful erections.

Male Sexual Organs

      Impotence; erection, but they fail when coition is attempted.

Want of desire organs shriveled.

Coition painful; urethra as if put on the stretch or sensitive at this orifice.

Ulcers on the prepuce small, covered with pus; later spreading, bowl-shaped with a tallow-like coating.

Contusive pain, with enlargement and hardness of right testicle.

Female Sexual Organs

      Bleeding ulcers, the hemorrhages of short duration.

Dreams of sexual gratification.

Coition painful, followed by bleeding from the vagina.

Prolapsus with ulceration of os or cervix uteri.

Menses: too early profuse, long-lasting; with head-ache, cutting in small of back and groin: at night tormenting pressure in praecordia; internal trembling in epigastrium; irregular, too soon or too late, too copious or too scanty, but always with thick, coagulated blood.

Metrorrhagia, with nervous erethism at change of life; also young widows and those who have borne no children; returns in attack; region of ovaries painful, with pains radiating to sacrum and thighs.

Leucorrhoea copious yellow corroding.

Pregnancy

      Disposed to abortion.

During pregnancy stomach as if it would burst with wind; head feels expanded.

Nipples sore from nursing.

Puerperal convulsions; spasms preceded by a sensation of general expansion mostly of face and head.

Sometimes just after an attack she lies quiet, but before another she become very restless.

Suckling infants die early; marasmus.

Larynx

      Internal soreness of the larynx and pit of the throat; worse in the morning.

Hoarse voice.

Phlegm in the larynx causing rattling whistling breathing until removed in small lumps by cough.

Rawness soreness high up in trachea, when coughing Chronic laryngitis of singers raising voice cause cough.

Breathing

      Many people in room seem to take away his breath.

Motion going to stairs or bodily exertion causes asthmatic attacks face congested palpitation.

Short breathed with deep sighs much oppression; violent attacks of dry, spasmodic asthma, forcing him to rise and walk about.

Inclined to take a deep breath, but the effort causes asthma.

Upper abdominal walls are drawn in during inspiration: expand during expiration; the effort to breathe deeply takes away the breath at once. Paralysis of diaphragm.

Spasms of the respiratory muscles in cholera; great constriction and stitches in the epigastrium: cannot talk; drinking suffocates; even a handkerchief before the nose impedes breathing; agony, thinks of killing himself.

Cough

      Cough evenings; tobacco smoke becomes intolerable.

Irritating cough, tormenting evening and night.

Suffocative cough at noon.

Paroxysms of cough are brought on by; phlegm in larynx; irritation under the sternum; by a fit of passion; laughing; stooping; smoking; ascending stairs.

Expectoration purulent, mixed with light blood.

Catarrh at first dry, later loose, with rattling cough, profuse seat, sickly look, yellow eyes, restless sleep : expectoration yellow.

Belching or straining to vomit, during the attack of cough.

Inner Chest

      Stitching pain in region of fifth rib, left side, with frequent blood spitting.

Bursting pain after going up stairs; has to press with both hands.

Aching, tensive pain in the chest in various places of the size of a half dollar.

Heart, Pulse

      Palpitation of the heart : with nausea; with asthma; violent, from the slightest mental emotion or sudden muscular exertion.

Heart’s action irregular, intermittent, with an unpleasant sensation of fulness; exertion causes strong beating, worse when noticing it.

Constant anxious feeling in region of heart; burning feeling.

Pains about the heart, can hardly breathe; choking.

Outer Chest

      Violent pain in the muscles of the chest.

Neck Back

      Indurated glands on the neck, with suspicion of former syphilis.

Acute pains in the dorsal region after a fall.

Pain in the small of the back, relieved when standing or walking; but severe when rising from a seat.

Pain in back and lower ribs during pregnancy.

Weakness in sacro-iliac symphysis as if bones were loose.

Sense of weight in lower part of sacrum and os coccygis, better standing; worse sitting and with stool.

Upper Limbs

      Paralytic drawing pain in right arm.

Heaviness of the left arm.

Pimple on hand near wrist, feels as if a splinter was in it.

Spasmodic contraction of the abductors of the fingers, can hardly separate them; fingers half clenched.

Hands tremble, cannot write.

Nails blue.

Numbness of finger tips; left ring and little fingers insensible.

Lower Limbs

      Lassitude of lower limbs with dizziness as from intoxication.

Debility and weakness of lower limbs the whole afternoon : with sick feeling and dread of work.

Numbness of the lower extremities, with coldness.

Limbs, especially his knees, start up at night, awakening him.

Calves weary, as after a long journey.

Pains in calves torment him all night.

OEdema of the feet.

Limbs in General

      Lassitude, weariness of forearms, legs.

Trembling. Paralysis.

Rheumatic tendency in right arm and thigh. Asthma. During day, tormented with formication of arms and legs.

Chorea like convulsive motion of limbs; legs drawn up; arms jerked outward and upward.

Position etc.

      Motion : Moving neck :. Walking : Walks fast : Going up stairs : Exertion : Lying : Sitting : Stooping : Rising : Standing : Changing from rest to motion :.

Nerves

      Epilepsy from fright, during menstruation; at night; pupils always dilated for a day or two before; also vertiginous epilepsy, loss of vision.

Hysteria, with complete but transient blindness.

Convulsions preceded by great restlessness.

Chorea, with tearing in legs.

Locomotor ataxia, lightning-like plains; vertigo gastric symptoms (q.v.) Creeping, jerking in various parts, more in paralyzed parts.

Periodical trembling of the body.

Voluntary motion impossible; left side indescribably weak.

Paraplegia from debilitating causes.

Traumatic paraplegia, also when from compression as in Pott’s disease.

So weak, must lie down; then becomes apathetic, with yawning; cold shuddering.

Walks and stands unsteadily, after hard mental labor; especially when he thinks himself unobserved,.

Sleep

      Yawning and chilliness; soporous condition.

Is prevented from falling asleep by fancies and images hovering before his imagination.

After long, wearisome, fatiguing night-watching.

Much excited at night; murmured constantly; nothing but shaking would arouse him; scarcely are his eyes open before he again closes them.

Sees departed friends, the dead, ghosts at night; dreams of putrid water, of serpents, which fill him with horror.

In the morning, dreams he is hungry; this awakens him, and he finds he has a violent spasm of the stomach, with hunger, nausea, flatulence.

Chill Fever Sweat

      Chilliness, with nausea; chilly with many complaints.

Chilly, with cold hands and feet.

Constant chilliness up back and over shoulders; worse after meals; worse coming into room from the open air.

Skin dry, but not very hot.

Temperature sunken.

Intermittent fever, with pulmonary hemorrhage; generally no thirst.

Profuse sweat; it stands out on the face in beads; stitches in the side, cough during the attack.

Morning sweat.

Sweat and chilliness, soon as he gets warm in bed.

Attacks

      Increasing quickly and decreasing quickly, or gradually increasing and decreasing.

Pains in skill sometimes remit, and are followed by more violent hemicrania.

Asthmatic attacks at night with rapid pulse.

Moral and nervous disturbances come on in quite regular paroxysms.

Sides

Sensations

      Sensation of expansion head face, etc.

Want of feeling; numbness in external parts.

Dreadful soreness in the flesh and limbs.

Like a splinter in various parts.

Tissues

      Emaciation, most marked in legs; withered look.

OEdema of legs; ascites; affection of the liver.

Muscles rigid.

Sallowness rather than pallor: Shortness of breath: gastric ulcer; chlorosis.

Bone affection; especially caries of little bones.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
