Manganum


Dr. S.R. Phatak describes the clinically confirmed symptoms of the homeopathic remedy Manganum in his Concise Materia Medica, published in 1977….


Generalities

      Mang. is closely associated with iron, and like iron Mang. causes anaemia with destruction of red blood corpuscles. Moreover it has special affinity for INNER EAR; larynx, trachea; periosteum of shinbone. Joints. Ankles and lower limbs. Motor paralysis, ascending. Paralysis agitans, paraplegia, come under its influence. Bones are very sensitive, Painful, deep soreness of the whole body; every part of the body feels sore when touched; ears, joints, skin. Pain extends to ear from other parts. Everything affects the ear. Diagonal pains. Yellow-green lumpy or bloody discharges. Chronic arthritis; with infiltrated glistening joints. Weak joints. Festination; walks backwards. Growing pains and weak ankles. Progressive muscular atrophy. Cellulitis; sub-acute stage. Suppuration of skin around joints. Asthmatic persons who cannot lie on a feather pillow. Fatty degeneration. Wants to lie down in bed which better all the troubles. Typhoid fever; after, cases badly treated, with prolonged convalescence. Valuable for boys and girls whose voices are changing. Necrosis and caries of bones. Malignant ulcers with blue border, following slight injury.

Worse

      Change of weather. Touch. Cold. Damp. Night. Speaking. Feather bed. Laughing. Motion. Bending backwards.

Better

      Lying down. Open air. Sad music. Eating. Swallowing. Change of weather.

Mind

      Constant moaning or groaning. Weak and nervous. Anxiety and fear. Involuntary laughing and weeping. Anxiety and fear when moving in the room better lying down. Anxiety as if something bad is going to happen. Sad, weeping, silent. All the mental conditions are better lying down. Does not enjoy joyous music, but immediately affected by the saddest.

Head

      Feels heavy; seems larger. Pains from above downwards worse straining at stools, jarring, stepping.

Eyes

      Field of vision contracted. Aching in the eyes, from sewing, reading fine print.

Ears

      Everything affects the ears; pain extends to ear from other parts. Ears feel stopped. Deafness in damp weather. Tinnitus. Swelling of the parotid glands, in fevers. Blowing the nose better deafness. Stitching in the ears, from talking, laughing, swallowing. Cracking in, worse blowing nose and swallowing.

Nose

      Blowing is painful. Crampy pain at the root of the nose. Dry coryza, with complete obstruction. Obstruction of nose and fluent coryza alternately.

Face

      Pale, sickly; stolidly mask-like. Twitching, jerking pain from lower jaw to temples worse laughing.

Mouth

      Nodes on palate and on tongue. Toothache worse anything cold or sucking, going up in the ears. Flow of saliva; while speaking; with colic, paralysis etc. Taste oily.

Throat

      Hemming and hawking all the time; and annoying everybody.

Abdomen

      Chronic enlargement of the liver. Jaundice. As if intestines were loose and shaking when walking about. Pain and constriction at the navel Passes much flatus with stools. Bowels are irregular, he has constipation or diarrhoea. Cramps in the anus while sitting, better lying down. Cutting in umbilical region worse on taking deep breath.

Urinary

      Darting in urethra on passing flatus.

Female

      First menses delayed. Menses; early, scanty, pale in anaemic patients. Climacteric flushings. Discharge of blood between periods.

Respiratory

      Chronic hoarseness; voice rough; worse a.m.; better by expectoration of greenish or yellow lump of mucus or smoking. Cough better lying down; worse reading, laughing; with aphonia. Every cold rouses up a bronchitis. Aphonia; from laryngeal tuberculosis. Larynx dry and sore.

Extremities

      Weak, uncertain legs. Cannot walk backwards without falling. Walks stooping forwards. Slapping gait. Walks on metatarso- phalangeal joint; walks backwards. Tendency to fall forwards. Inflammation of bones and joints, with nightly digging pains; in shin bones. Inflamed ankles. Children are unable to walk on account of affections of ankles. Paralysis, with inclination to run forwards if he tried to walk. Knees pain and itch. Hands when closed and stretched feel swollen.

Skin

      Rough, cracked (flexures), bluish. Suppuration of skin around joints. Red elevated spots. Chronic eczema, with amenorrhoea, worse menses or menopause. Dry hard ulcers. Pruritus of diabetes. Chronic eruptions, inveterate like psoriasis.

Sleep

      Many vivid dreams which are well remembered. Much yawning.

Fever

      Sudden flushes of heat, in face, in chest and over the back.

S.R. Phatak
A pioneer of Homoeopathy in Maharashtra, Dr Shankar Raghunath Phatak was born on 6th September, 1896. He did his MBBS from Grant Medical College, in 1924. Started his practice but somehow not satisfied with Allopathic Treatment.

He was convinced about Homoeopathy while going through Sir William Osler's writings on 'History of Medicine' so switched over to an entirely Homoeopathic Practice in 1932. He also started working on Homoeopathic literature along with his Practice.

He has contributed immensely to homoeopathic literature. He was an ardent follower of Dr Boger. His Repertory is based on Boger's ''A Synoptic key to Materia Medica'.
