4 b. Dr. S-thinks the above symptoms could not be owing to the small dose of hours taken, especially as he observed that many patients about this time had similar gastric symptoms. Some years later he made another proving of the medicine with the following results: – June 23rd. A mixture containing 3 dr. of 1st dil. taken in 3 doses from morning till noon. This caused drowsiness and slight perspiration towards morning Forenoon, perspiration when working in garden. Afternoon, painful tension like cramp in soles; lassitude when walking, not when sitting; general malaise; shooting pain in chest and feeling of heartburn internally; shooting in ribs and shoulders as if from a chill; pain in belly, pinching, distension of abdomen, soft stool. E., after coffee, pain in belly, diarrhoeic stool; head heavy, confused; soreness of eyelids, burning in canthi, fatigue of eyes, tension in nape; pain on moving head; tingling in feet, soles cold. Night, copious bright yellow urine with burning; sleep dreamful, sensible dreams. – 25th. Itching in forehead, crown, hips; eyelids slimy, tense; ulcerative pain on outer border of left hand when it sins laid on table; yawning; pressive pain in occiput when moving. – 26th. 1 dr. tinct. gouty pain, swelling and tension in proximal joint of left little finger; mental fatigue (A.h. Z., Ixxix, 22 and 30.)

5. a. Dr. STOKES, August 17th, 1852, on smelling and tasting tinct. just set to macerate, in evening, felt as if under influence of tea, and went to bed with brain excited; did not sleep soundly; dreams vivid. Next morning found himself on back, and digging head backwards into pillow, Rose well; immediately after breakfast severe scalp headache in left occiput, at times sharp, at times dull. 11, took 3ss (? 3ss) of tinct., and walked out. Access of erotic ideas, very vivid, immediately, lasting for 1/4 hour. Felt as if excited by tea all day; p. m., caving for wine. Pulse accelerated after dinner. On going to sleep starting in right forearm above wrist. 19th. – Rather dull and languid in morning 10:30, took 3ss; no effect all day., but at night felt a if excited by tea. In evening stomach felt contracted and hot; made mistakes in writing. Starting of left leg in going off to sleep. 20th. – Dreams active, confused; on rising felt rather wry, with foul tongue. 11 a. m., took 3j, and felt dull head clear up under it directly. Later, slight lancination in right great for 1/4 hour. Back of head bothered this forenoon; peculiar, slightly cutting warm pain all round rectum, internal to sphincter. 21st. – Took 3ss. After breakfast dull, heavy pressure on right side of chest from 7th rib down. 6 p. m., dragging pain in liver at point of false ribs. 22nd. On going to sleep jerking of tendons in left wrist. Lay a good deal on back; sleep uneasy; threw head back, and kept on jerking it backwards. 23rd. -This night conscious of anxious dreams, as if something important we left undone. 11 a. m., took 3j of infusion; p. m., 3ij more. No effect; slept well; felt very well. 24th. – Head dull; weary and heavy all day; momentary pains in inner condyle of right femur between left index and thumb, at entrance of right ear, inside right calf. In bed at night slight shoots down great sciatic at back of pelvis. Took 3j. 25th. -Slept well; dreams busy; pain in right knee again this morning. A cluster of itching vesicle on root of left thumb in forenoon, gone at night Walking p. m., felt bruised pain in left thigh, muscles applied by anti. crural are stiff and sore; this lasted some day, going and coming; all joints feel bruised, left ankle particularly liable to wrench. Mind soberly inclined for 3 day 27th. – Dreams full of bustle; forget people’s names; cutting pain between shoulder- blades to right or vertebrae. 28th. – Fulness of head; mind disposed to be sad and tenderly melancholy; sawing pains in left hand and 1 inner ankle; creeping in right breast and right occiput. No subsequent symptoms.

5 b. September 6th. – Took between dinner and tea 3x of a mixture of 3ij of tinct. and of infusion. Lancing pain in left finger-joints; drawing in right calf; itching in right meatus and going off on touching, but recurring; pressure in right iliac fossa near ring; burning stinging in edges of left eyelids; increase distance of vision in evening, with slight aching of brows and face, which increased in night to severe distressing ache in right half of face, in an old stump especially. 7th. – Sleep disturbed and uneasy from faceache; barrooms; in morning early momentary stinging biting on back of right toes, feet disposed to tingle. After breakfast pressure on malar prominences; dull faceache in forenoon and evening, and return of sensation in toes. Took 3iij of mixture. 8th. – Bad night from horrid (sexual) dreams. In forenoon slight pains in shoulder-joints, especially left; pressure on chest at nipples with peculiar warm kind of formication. 9th.- Dreams as before 4 p. m., walking, pressive pains for a few minutes in renal region; biting stinging in orifice of urethra. Feel rather dull to-day. 10th. – Took 3iss. After breakfast pressure in stomach, extending towards back; pressive pains down left forearm, ulnar side; stinging burning at edge of left pectoralis for 1 m.tendency to tingling of legs, especially left 11th. – Last night severe aching in old stump of a right upper molar, keeping him awake and restless; best lying on that cheek and keeping quiet; single thrills of shooting pain in pectorales. 12th. – Sleep quiet and dreamless; after breakfast pressure on outer third of left clavicle; fleeting pains in right shoulder and left cal; cutting pain under left shoulder-blade, with pressure in stomach after dinner. Same after breakfast next morning, and some flying pains here and there. Proving interrupted y a spoiled stomach.

5 c. September 17th. – Proved dilution of 20 dr. of tinct. to 3ij of spirit. Took 10 dr. at 10:40. P. m., while walking, erotic ideas and erection; in evening feeling as if headache would come on in left, occiput. 18th. – Soft yellow bellow stool at 4 p. m., usual firm one having occurred in morning. At 8 p. m., 10dr.; in an hour painful drawing in right tibialis anticus, and momentary squeezing pressure in left kidney. 19th. -10 dr. three times. This morning slight rheumatic drawing aching in point of left shoulder; head dull; nose dry on rising and all day; twinges of pain along external border of left foot after dinner; dull stinging in right pectoralis, extending to back around ribs. 20 th. – Dreams confused; woke early with pain in right trapezius; it went off after washing. at noon 10 dr. Nose dry; lips dry yesterday and to-day. 21st- Last night at 12, coming home, felt sudden shoot of pain all over front of left leg, apparently in periosteum; it recurred 2 or 3 times, and several times to-day. Papulae on neck such a had appeared before on chest; aching in region of trapezii. At 10:30 took 20 dr. on tongue twice; later, finished medicine. Flashes of waking drawing pain all over front of left leg, all p. m., either walking or sitting; attack for a few morning os same sort of pain in scalp (left parietal region); pressure on malar bones, evening 22nd. – Slight and transient pains, mainly pressive, in various parts. 23rd. -after glass of beer at dinner, old stump ached slightly, and went on to ache badly during night, and more or less all next day., when occurred also pressure on if as of a blunt point several times, and weight and dragging in liver when walking home late at night. 25th. – Horrid dreams; stomach felt hot and uncomfortable on rising; various slight and transient pains here and there during day 26th. – At 8 a. m., took 10 dr. of 3rd cent. dil. About midday an aching in font of left thigh, felt yesterday recurred, and came and went frequently. Momentary lancinating pain elbow and down neck. 27th. – Sleep full of dreams, woke on back dreaming of some desperate horror. 28th. – Took 10 dr. of same at 11 a. m.; in an hour pressure at left groin, towards ring; p. m., several pressive pain on top of right shoulder 29th. – Sleep disturbed; horrid dreams; starting of legs when falling asleep; slight convulsive shocks and twitches following, preventing sleep; erethismic state of nervous system, all night; erotic ideas and dreams; lancing pains in left wrist and ankle, and along inner border of left foot. 30th. – Better night, rose refreshed; took 10 dr. in morning. Pressive pain on centre of front of left thigh; severe drawing pains own nerves of right leg for a few moments; lancing pains in fingers. Left nostril has been abnormally dry for a week; crusts in it. October 1st – Pains in left thigh as before; cutting pains in fleshy ends of fingers; sight weak. 2nd. – Occasional reoccurrence of pains during next 3 days, but no new symptoms appeared. (Hom. 6. a. S. E.S. -, single woman, aet.35, began October 11th, 1882, to take 10 dr. of tinct. 3 times a day. For first 2 days felt very well. On 3rd day., in evening, bowels full and flatulent; restless night; cramp in left foot on going to sleep; numbness in left arm, waking her 3 times going off after friction. 4th day, cramp in left leg on going to sleep. 5th day, fulness of head and low spirits this morning, passing off in 2 hours, followed by feeling of stiffness in eyes, as after tears and strained painful feeling in forehead. 6th day, painless loose motions morning and evening for last 3 days 7th day, in night awoke with distension and cracking pains in bowels, and great nausea; constipation; urine turbid. After 8th day increased dose to 30 dr. 9th day., 4 hours after 1st dose great coldness and numbness of left leg for 10 morning, while sitting; indigestion and flatulence in night; woke on 10th days with distension and cracking pain in lower belly, relieved by relaxation of bowels. Again slight numbness of leg after 1st dose. 11th day, flatulence and distension of stomach after tea; sleep disturbed by left faceache, which came on p. m. 12th day, pain in face increased; low spirits; defective memory, can hardly arrange ideas or execute intentions, forgets what she wanted to do; after this faceache subsided, and she went from home. Catamenia appeared on 16th day., with less trouble than usual and in greater quantity.

Richard Hughes
Dr. Richard Hughes (1836-1902) was born in London, England. He received the title of M.R.C.S. (Eng.), in 1857 and L.R.C.P. (Edin.) in 1860. The title of M.D. was conferred upon him by the American College a few years later.

Hughes was a great writer and a scholar. He actively cooperated with Dr. T.F. Allen to compile his 'Encyclopedia' and rendered immeasurable aid to Dr. Dudgeon in translating Hahnemann's 'Materia Medica Pura' into English. In 1889 he was appointed an Editor of the 'British Homoeopathic Journal' and continued in that capacity until his demise. In 1876, Dr. Hughes was appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Organization of the International Congress of Homoeopathy Physicians in Philadelphia. He also presided over the International Congress in London.
