Belladonna [Bell]

Pressing and urging downwards anus and genitals, alternating with contractions of the anus; spasmodic constriction of anus, as in dysentery.

Causticum [Caust]

Fruitless urging to stool, with anxiety and red face.

Cocculus [Cocc]

Tenesmus recti after stool, with faintness; lessened peristalsis.

Ignatia [Ign]

Proctalgia; contraction, with cutting, shooting pains, (<) after stool, Symptoms irregular, fitful, as in hysteria.

Kali-bichrom [Kali-bi]

Sensation of a plug; diarrhoea of brown, frothy water, squirting out in early morn and followed by tenesmus ani.

Lachesis [Lach]

Tormenting urging in rectum, but on account of constriction of anus it becomes so painful he must desist; protruding piles with constricted anus.

Mezereum [Mez]

After stool the anus is constricted around the protruding rectum.

Natrum-mur [Nat-m]

Sensation of contraction in rectum during stool; faeces tear the anus; frequent ineffectual urging; spasmodic constriction of anus.

Nitric-acid [Nit-ac]

Sticking in rectum as from a splinter; constriction during stool and lasting for hours afterwards; rectum feels as if torn.

Opium [Op]

Obstinate constipation; anus spasmodically closed during colic; inactivity of bowels, stools consisting of hard, round, black balls; flatulency from inertia.

Plumbum [Plb]

Retraction of abdomen; marked spasm or contraction of sphincter ani; urging to stool, and sensation as if a string were drawing the anus up into the rectum; faeces hard and dry from absorption of their moisture.

Samuel Lilienthal
Dr. Samuel Lilienthal (1815-1891) was from Germany, and became a pioneer homeopath in America. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Munich in 1838. After he moved to the United States, he was hired as Professor of Clinical Medicine at New York College for Women, and also as Professor of Mental and Nervous Diseases at the New York Homeopathic College.
Dr. Samuel Lilienthal was the author of many great books including “Homeopathic Therapeutics”. For many years, with the support of Dr. Constantine Hering, he was the editor of the North American Journal of Homeopathy. Dr. Lilienthal passed away on February 2nd 1891 in San Francisco.
