Messrs. George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., have published at IOS. 6d a book by Dr. Rasmus Alsaker, entitled The Master Key to Health. It is a noteworthy and significant publication. In America many doctors who have passed the orthodox examinations describe themselves as drugless doctors, or as doctors who use no drugs, no injections and no surgery. They rely on natural means alone.
Dr. Alsaker, the Director of the Sun-Diet Health Foundation, has written the above-mentioned volume which proclaims his faith in Nature Cure. Nature Cure is undoubtedly very potent, especially if it is reinforced by homoeopathic medication, which is infinitely safer than orthodox treatment. The extract printed will give readers a fair idea of the character and the teaching of this interesting volume – Editor “HEAL THYSELF”.
The poorest food offered to the public is highly refined white sugar. Yes, it is very nourishing. It digests easily and within the body it creates a plentiful amount of heat and energy. If we go no further, we have to admit that white sugar is a most excellent food because it does nourish. But a food should do more than nourish, and that is where white sugar falls down completely.
All good foods should do two things: they should nourish the body and they should help to maintain and build health. The action of sugar in causing deterioration of the body is indirect. A piece of candy or a piece of loaf sugar does not directly poison anyone, but when a person eats much sugar, an appetite is created for more and more of the artificial sweets and in this way the desire for wholesome food is partly destroyed, and with that destruction goes some of the individuals health. We need vital food to build good bodies, and sugar completely lacks life.
Some will make the objection that human beings not only crave sugar, but need sugar. To this our reply is that white sugar was unknown until a few centuries ago. Three hundred years ago when the Virgin Queen ruled England sugar was an expensive drug and considered a cure-all.
It was known as Indian salt because the scanty supply came from India. In those days the populace had no sugar to consume. White sugar is not a necessity. It can be eaten in moderation without causing any trouble, but the difficulty is that those who eat sugar take too much of it.
Sugar is especially bad for children because they are not only in need of nourishment but of substances to furnish material for growth, so as to develop soundly and normally for the future. Consequently they should have the very best of building materials. The best building materials for children are the natural foods, the foods that give life and strength and energy and endurance. They need foods, not only to build good muscle and fine nerve and excellent brain tissue, but for the best of bone material and teeth.
