Forehead

      Twitching of l. muscles; in r. superciliary ridge, with dragging. Stitches in r. and l.; over eyes; stitches in r. eminence from a noise at breakfast; in a spot in l. eminence; over l. brow, (>) scratching; in l. superciliary ridge, towards outside, morning on waking, in I. superciliary ridge, with twisting; alternately in each eminence; in front, always after rising, gradually extending to occiput; jerking deep in cerebrum; piercing cerebrum like lightning when walking in open air, with feeling as if he would lose consciousness. Tearing in bones; above nose; intermittent drawing. Drawing cutting when standing, becoming pressive stunning when sitting. Aching; in morning, with contraction of muscles of forehead and lids; on waking; when sitting, with vertigo; (<) open air; (>) towards evening; in cavities; in l. side; l. eminence; over l. eye; above eyes, with stitches; in middle, (>) pressure upon temples; in superciliary ridges, also l., then r.; in r. superciliary ridge, in morning; in r. superciliary ridge, (>) washing body with cold water, then worse again; in r. supraorbital region on walking in open air; above r. side, with burning; in r., with morning dullness of head; alternately in each eminence; in frontal and sagittal sutures. Deep-seated aching at margin of hair of forehead; deep-seated in r. eminence in morning on waking. Aching extending inward; extending to eyes, with twitching; pressing upon upper half of eyeballs. Sensation during the day as if headache were coming on, which appeared towards evening in spots upon F. and temples. Aching in sinciput as if sides of head were pressed together. Piercing r. superciliary ridge; itching piercing over l. brow, (>) scratching. Grinding in l. eminence. Burning pain above r. eye, with lachrymation; burning pain in l. eyebrow and occiput, with sensitiveness to touch and pressure. Drawing pain; between superciliary ridges; in middle; in l.; r. side in morning on waking; from l. towards r. side while siting; in l. eminence, oppressing eye; in forehead, eye and occiput, with pressure; intermittent, extending to eyes, also during the day. Drawing in bone from both sides, as far as root of nose. Boring; (>) pressure; in l. superciliary ridge. Burrowing in l. eminence and over l. eye; in l. forehead and occiput; in l. eminence, along sagittal suture, through whole hemisphere to occiput, when walking in open air in forenoon; in l. eminence as if everything in brain wee stirred up; as if the brain were an ant-hill, with fulness of head. Sore feeling above l. brow. Enlarged feeling and sensation as if the brain were promiscuously mixed up, with aching in temples. Fulness. Confusion. Heaviness; painful.

Temples.- Twitching in l.; about temples and ears; in temples and cheeks; in l. temple and zygoma; in r. temple and along zygoma, with shooting; rhythmical in l. temporal and frontal regions. Stitches; l.; over r. eye; r. after taking, then l. then pressure in l.; (<) l. region; mastoid process. Tearing in r. Aching in temples; l. r.; r. bone; l., then r., then in l. lower jaw, like a decayed tooth beginning to ache; aching at noon; in spot in l. region after breakfast; above l. concha, reaching deep into the brain, (<) touching hair, with depressed spirits; cramplike, in l.; drawing; in r., more stupefying than throbbing; boring throbbing in squamous portion of bones. Burrowing in l. at midnight, (>) pressure; dull burrowing in l. after dinner. Dragging downward, extending as far as half of the ears, (<) during the day and by touch.

Vertex.- Stitches; itching. Tearing; lancinating, to l. ear. Aching; morning; morning, (>) after rising; at night; (>) open air; pulsating, with despair bordering on rage. Deep-seated boring.

Sides.- Twitching in r. Flashlike stroke externally in l. Shooting; r. l.; from l. parietal bone into r. temple; in l. half from 10 A.M. till 2 P.M., then periodical stitches. Tearing in r. upper; in r. parietal bone, over ear, (<) touch, with sensation as of a festering spot; in l. circumference of brain, with pressing, especially in orbit and zygoma, and with confusion of head; fine, behind and over l. ear. Aching in r.; l.; l. on waking, (>) after rising; l. with urging to urinate; in l. side of skull, with tearing; in l. half, becoming a burrowing; in r. as from a nail; boring in l. skull and in ascending ramus of lower jaw.

Occiput.- Stitches across; flying stitches in forenoon; periodical; tearing from one side to the other in morning. Tearing in r.; r. half of bone; behind head and over l. ear; intermittent tearing in l. Aching; in l. half of bone when seated; (<) lying and becoming burning and extending between superciliary ridges when lying on back; throbbing. Drawing pain; in afternoon; morning in bed, (<) stretching and holding breath. Drawing Boring. Burrowing between occipital region and nape in forenoon, with weariness in lower limbs and sleepiness; in r. half of occiput in morning in bed, with stitches in middle of r. cheek. Bruised feeling in occiput and nape; in r. side of occiput. Creaking towards l., (<) pressure, with pain on touch. Tension; especially in spots; extending towards occiput, there developing into aching, with heaviness. Heaviness; towards neck-joint, with tension. Dull fulness after waking. Atlas- joint. Stitches. Jarring, extending into head.

Scalp.- Elevations on occiput and along sagittal sutures, with biting burning after scratching. Scurf in spots. Pimples; painful on vertex at roots of hair, bleeding easily and leaving red pimples. Vesicles on forehead. Twitching over l. ear; above r. eye. Stitches on top of l. side, changing to pressive pain in vertex; biting, in l. side of scalp, in parietal bone and splinter stitches in r. temporal region near ear. Tearing and drawing pain in scalp and skull at night, (<) pressure, especially a spot on vertex, which pains as from an internal festering. Tearing tensive sensation in occiput.

Tension. Sensitiveness of l. to touch; sensitiveness in spots; of eyebrows; as if ulcerated. Formication on scalp. Itching; (<) getting up; here and there, with sensitiveness to touch; like the healing of wounds; on vertex, with pimples; on occiput towards nape; on occiput, with pimples; burrowing, on occiput; biting, on forehead and on various parts; biting corroding, on l. side.

Clinical Vertigo from the sun. Severe neuralgic headaches mostly in small spots, sharp piercing pain as from a nail (Ignatia). Dull headache from prolonged desk-work.

Eyes

      Yellow. Red. Fierce expression. Rolling; upward. Staring wildly. Sticking, with tension; scraping sticking under r. upper lip. Pain; on moving them or exerting by candle light; after dinner with inclination to close them without sleepiness; towards inside; above upper lids, (>) when closed, with fatigue of eyes after great exertion in too strong a light; P. as from a grain of sand in l., also under r. upper lid at noon, with lachrymation; drawing P.; twitching pain in l.; P. as from something inward in eyes and upon forehead; burning pain. Burning; always after closing lids; burning after opening and closing; burning after yawning; burning with itching; burning, with weariness. Hot to touch. Dryness. Contracted feeling in evening; contracted feeling in r., with clearer vision, then biting pain in eyeball and lachrymation, then twitching in l. eye (which had existed in r.), (>) wine. Painful stretching in morning on waking. Sensation as if they had to be wiped constantly. Itching in morning; in r., (>) rubbing, with pressure; in r., with pricking; in l., with tickling. Sensitiveness. Weak feeling. Insensibility to light. Lachrymation; r.; while reading.

Ball.- Pulled upward towards angles of orbits and fixed. Twitched here and there; also with lachrymation of l.; twitched in l. while reading, with pressing; painful twitching in r., sudden tearing in r. Pain; when moved; on touch; in l.; in l. in morning; in l., with spasms; in upper and outer part of r., drawing P.; pain as from pressure of a hand; piercing in r.; intermittent pain towards top and outward in r. Drawing in ball after dinner, (<) l., extending into forehead, with pressing. Painful worrying under l. lid, as if on ball, or itching. Burning, (<) moving them, with pressing. (<) Motion of ball difficult. Enlarged feeling; in l. after vomiting.

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
In 1881 Allen published A Critical Revision of the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica.
