MIND.


Constant muttering to himself. θ Typhus.
Inclined to talk, laugh and be merry.
Undecided, shunning labor, but after beginning, works well.
  

SENSORIUM.


Vertigo when walking about ; apyrexia of ague.
Dulness of head during a walk in open air, with reeling and dizziness ; unsteady gait, head inclines at times to l., at others to right side.
  

INNER HEAD.


Drawing pain or needlelike stitches in left temple while sitting, ceasing when walking and standing.
Violent tearing in occiput. θ Typhus.
Pressure with heaviness in lower part of occiput, after lying down.
Sharp stitches externally in left side of forehead.
Pressive pain in right temple.
Sensation in head as if brain were constricted on all sides by pressure.
Nausea with headache ; anxiety.
  

OUTER HEAD.


Head falls now to left, now to right side, with vertigo.
Sweat on falling asleep, most on head. θ Quotidian ague.
  

SIGHT AND EYES.


Aversion to light.
Burning in left eyeball.
Burning sticking in left eyeball, toward external canthus.
  

HEARING AND EARS.


Drawing pain in external ear.
  

SMELL AND NOSE.


Nosebleed, left side.
Nose cold. θ Quotidian ague.
  

FACE.


Face hot and red.
Pimples on cheeks, ala nasi and corners of mouth.
  

LOWER FACE.


Upper lip cracked.
  

TEETH AND GUMS.


Teeth : feel dull ; set on edge, as from acids, when chewing food.
Bleeding from carious teeth, blood having a sour taste.
  

TASTE, SPEECH, TONGUE.


Taste : bitter, before eating ; bitter, rising from pharynx into mouth ; sour ; saltish, especially of butter and meat.
White spots on tongue among the red.
Tongue : coated white ; cleans off in patches, leaving dark-red, tender, very sensitive spots ; mapped tongue.

INNER MOUTH.


Tough, ropy, sour-tasting saliva.
Sour water accumulates in mouth.
Accumulation of saliva in mouth, with sensation as if larynx were compressed.
Suppurating pimple in right corner of mouth.
Smarting, burning and rawness in mouth and fauces.
  

PALATE AND THROAT.


Throat and larynx feel as if closed.
During and after swallowing of food, aching across clavicles, up left side of her neck into ear ; gullet feels too small for food.
Dryness in throat.
Hawking up of sour mucus setting teeth on edge.
Sharp pressure in anterior wall of pharynx and larynx, disappears on swallowing.
  

APPETITE, THIRST, DESIRES, AVERSIONS.


Great thirst, day and night.
Loss of appetite.

EATING AND DRINKING.


After taking anything to eat or drink, great chilliness. θ Typhus.
Coughs after eating.
Bitterish taste in mouth before eating.
Empty belching, after drinking.
Burning in throat from smoking, > from drinking.
Irresistible drowsiness after a meal.
  

HICCOUGH, BELCHING, NAUSEA AND VOMITING.


Eructations bitter ; hiccough.
Belching, gagging, nausea at night. θ Ague.
Nausea, with headache, anxiety ; after fat food.
  

SCROBICULUM AND STOMACH.


Rawness extending from mouth to stomach, with burning in stomach, rising up toward throat.
Digestion disturbed. θ Jaundice.
Bilious dyspepsia ; bitter taste ; nausea as after fat food ; mapped tongue ; pain in legs > when moving.
  

HYPOCHONDRIA.


Liver enlarged, indurated. θ Jaundice.
Pain in region of spleen. θ Ague.
Tongue mapped, bitter taste in mouth, chilliness after eating or drinking, pain and soreness in region of liver, bilious diarrhoea.
  

ABDOMEN AND LOINS.


Motions in lower abdomen as if bubbles were forming and bursting.
Abdomen puffed. θ Jaundice.
Stitching pains in abdomen, especially in sides.
  

STOOLS AND RECTUM.


Ineffectual urging, with much pressing ; scanty hard stool. θ Ague.
Stool difficult, even if not hard.

Voluptuous itching in perineum, compelling scratching.
Constipation. θ Jaundice.
  

URINARY ORGANS.


Frequent, profuse pale urine. θ Diabetes.
  

MALE SEXUAL ORGANS.


In a hard swelling in left epididymis, following an inflammation after contusion, violent shooting pains, running upward and spreading over whole pubic region, after urinating.
  

FEMALE SEXUAL ORGANS.


Suppressed menses.
  

VOICE AND LARYNX, TRACHEA AND BRONCHIA.


As if larynx were compressed, with saliva in mouth, hoarse in speaking, with bitter phlegm in throat.
  

RESPIRATION.


With deeper inhalations tensive pain in region of diaphragm.
With exhalation, more than with inhalation, burning pressure in sternum.
With exhalation, pressure from inside to short ribs in region of liver, extending up chest.
Deeper respirations > pressive stitch in right chest.
  

COUGH.


Sour-tasting sputa.
  

INNER CHEST AND LUNGS.


Stitches in chest, during inspiration.
Boring, digging in chest.
Pressing pain in chest.
  

OUTER CHEST.


Twitching in right intercostal muscles.
Pressure on xiphoid process.
  

NECK AND BACK.


Tearing from ear down to neck.
Rolling and gurgling sensation in right scapula, feeling chilly.
Pressing stitches along spine, mostly in sacrum, with dyspnoea.
Twitching in lower portion of side of neck.
Sticking, as with a somewhat blunt needle, in left side of nape of neck, disappearing on sitting down.
  

UPPER LIMBS.


Twitching in muscles of arms.
Numbness in left arm, side of head and ear.
Pressive pain in right middle, ring and little fingers.
Hands hot or cold.
Finger tips icy-cold.
Twitching of muscles of left forearm.
  

LOWER LIMBS.


Stitches in thighs, calves and soles.
Tension in left thigh when stooping.
Pressive pain in left calf.
Jerking pain in right calf, ceases quickly when touched.
Tearing pains only in lower limbs, < during rest. θ Typhus.
Pressure in dorsum of right foot, while sitting.
Burning in knees, legs and toes.
Drawing pain in dorsum of right foot, when standing ; ceasing when sitting.
Severe, or fine stitching pains in right sole from within outward, while sitting.
  

LIMBS IN GENERAL.


Can move limbs, but they feel as if bound or powerless.
Limbs painful to touch and when in a wrong position.
  

REST, POSITION, MOTION.


Rest : tearing pains in limbs <.
Lying : pressure in occiput.
Sitting : pain in left temple ; pressure in dorsum of right foot ; drawing in dorsum of right foot >; stitching pains in right sole ; yawning.
Standing : drawing in dorsum of right foot.
Stooping : tension in left thigh.
A wrong position : causes pain in limbs.
Walking : vertigo ; in open air, dulness of head.
Motion : > pain in legs ; vertigo.
  

NERVES.


Exhausted, inclined to sit or lie down ; semi-conscious.
Debility, loss of appetite, profuse, exhausting night sweat ; thirst ; restless sleep.
  

SLEEP.


Yawning, sleepy when sitting.
At night on waking, heat, mostly in face and hands.
Sleep disturbed by : dreams ; sweat.
Vivid, unremembered dreams.
Unconquerable desire to sleep on leaving table ; frightful dreams, of which he preserves no recollection other than a painful impression.
  

TIME.


At 8 P. M. : hands and nose cold.
Night : nausea ; heat in face and hands ; chilliness, with sweat.
  

TEMPERATURE AND WEATHER.


Temperature and Weather
Inclined to open air.
In open air : chill.
  

FEVER.


Tips of fingers icy-cold.
Chilliness : all over ; at night, with sweat and gastric ailments ; after food or drink.
Chill in open air.
Long lasting chill, copious sweat ; pain in spleen. θ Ague.
Heat : at night, on waking ; most in face and hands ; without thirst.
Sweat : mostly with thirst ; copious, debilitating, at night, causing biting on skin.
Chilliness of long duration, often whole day, followed in night by general and profuse sweat ; gastric disturbances ; nausea ; belching ; stools delayed, scanty, hard, with much pressing ; pain in region of spleen. θ Ague.
About 8 P. M. hands and nose get cold, desires to go to bed and is soon asleep ; is hardly asleep before a profuse sweat appears, particularly on head, lasting an hour ; lassitude ; tendency to vertigo when moving about.
θ Quotidian ague.
Great prostration, loss of appetite ; profuse sweats at night, was compelled to change his shirt three times every night ; great thirst, day and night ; restless sleep.
θ Ague.
A hard chill, after eating or drinking.
θ Typhus.
Ague : where Cinchona has only slightly delayed paroxysms, and where disease degenerated into a slow fever, especially in dry and bilious subjects.
Typhoid fever ; during rest intolerable tearing pains, in lower extremities ; constant muttering delirium ; violent tearing pain in occiput ; great chilliness after eating or drinking ; mapped tongue.
Violent pains of typhoid or typho-malarial fevers, particularly in thighs.
  

LOCALITY AND DIRECTION.


Left : drawing or stitches in temples ; stitches in forehead ; burning sticking in eyeball ; nosebleed ; aching from neck into ear ; epididymitis ; sticking in side of neck ; numbness of arm ; twitching in forearm ; tension in thigh ; pressive pain in calf.
Right : pressive pain in temple ; pimple in corner of mouth ; twitching in intercostal muscles ; rolling and gurgling in scapula ; pressive pain in fingers ; jerking pain in calf ; pressure in dorsum of foot ; stitching pains in sole.
  

SENSATIONS.


As if brain were constricted ; as if teeth were set on edge ; as if larynx were compressed ; as if closed, throat and larynx ; as if bubbles were forming and bursting in abdomen ; as if rolling and gurgling in right scapula ; as if limbs were bound or powerless.
Pain : in region of spleen ; in region of liver.
Jerking pain : in right calf.
Needlelike stitches : in left temple.
Stitches : in left forehead ; in abdomen, especially sides ; in chest ; in thighs, calves and soles ; in right sole.
Pressing stitches : along spine ; in sacrum.
Shooting : from epididymis over pubic region.
Sticking : in left eyeball ; as with blunt needle on left side of nape.
Stinging : in skin.
Tearing : in occiput ; from ear to neck ; in lower limbs.
Boring digging : in chest.
Drawing pain : in left temple ; in external ear ; on dorsum of right foot.
Burning : in left eyeball ; in mouth and fauces ; in throat ; in stomach ; in knees, legs and toes.
Burning pressure : in sternum, < with exhalation.
Biting : in skin with sweat.
Smarting : in mouth and fauces.
Soreness : in region of liver.
Rawness : in mouth and fauces ; from mouth to stomach.
Pressure : in occiput ; from region of liver into chest ; in chest ; on xiphoid process ; in fingers ; upon back of foot.
Aching : across clavicles ; up left neck into ear.
Tensive pain : in region of diaphragm with deep inhalation.
Pressive pain : in right temple ; in left calf.
Tension : in left thigh when stooping.
Dulness : of head.
Heaviness : in occiput.

TISSUES.


Gastric bilious attacks, with mapped tongue.
Neuralgia and rheumatism during and after typhus.
  

TOUCH, PASSIVE MOTION, INJURIES.


Touch : > in right calf ; limbs painful.
  

SKIN.


Unhealthy, pimply, sycotic skin.
Stinging in skin.
Eruption over body and limbs, itching severely and appearing to be a mixture of lichen and urticaria.
Biting in skin, with sweat.
  

STAGE OF LIFE, CONSTITUTION.


Boy, at. 8 ; ague.
Girl, at. 19, servant ; typhoid fever.
Man, at. 46 ; ague.
A man : unhealthy, pimply, sycotic skin.
  

RELATIONS.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
