Introduction

Iris foetidissima, Linn. Natural order: Iridaceae. Preparation: Tincture of the root.

Mind

Makes mistakes in writing and speaking; puts right for left and vice versa, and I for you; (the above mentioned sides, right and left, I carefully ascertained to be correct), (sixth day).

Head

Vertigo. Light headed; felt as if head were going round, and as if he would fall to left side; objects see to run into one another; becoming confounded had to stand still to recover him self; this lasted two or three minutes, at 3. 30 P. M. (fourth day). Sensation as if he would fall to the left; in fact he staggered a little to the left, when walking down a street, in the evening (first day),. Staggering to the left twice when walking in room, directly after rising fro bed, at 4. 20 A.M. (second day); slight staggering to the left, when rising from kneeling (after eleven hours, (third day). Forehead. Sharp pain all over forehead for thirty minutes (after four hours, first day). Sensation on right side of top of forehead, as if it were being cut open, about an inch from behind forwards, for 3 minutes, at 7. 30 P. M. (twenty-first day). Momentary throbbing in right frontal eminence, immediately afterwards a momentary cessation, as if a heavy weight were being pulled over it, at 8. 5 P. M. (seventeenth day). Temples. Pricking as with a needle in right temporal muscle, for one minute, at 5. 15 P. M. (eighth day). Vertex. Feeling of a piece of ice on center of vertex (after fifteen minutes). Painful boring in right side of vertex, with slight pressure there, for ten minutes, at 7. 15 P. M. (fourth day). Rheumatic drawing pain in right side of vertex, aggravated by bending head down to read, for ten minutes, at 11. 5 P. M. (fourth day). Great weight in vertex when the pain in stomach occurs; cannot sit to his business (office work), in the morning; pain at vertex sometimes reaches down to over eyes. Sharp shoot into brain on left side of vertex, leaving a little feeling of soreness there, but not sore to touch, for one minute, at 10. 10 P. M. (sixth day).

Eyes

Slight twitching in external corner of left supraorbital ridge, for half a minute, at 4. 30 P. M. (seventeenth day). Twitching in right upper eyelid at intervals during afternoon, from 1. 30 P. M. till 7 P. M. (twenty first day). Pricking pain in right upper eyelid, with fullness of forehead, mostly on right side, for half an hour, directly after dinner (1 P. M)., (second day). A feeling at right outer canthus as if it had been bruised; it is felt on working or rubbing that part; the pain is in the integuments, not in the eyeball (thirty-first and thirty-second days); a small stye on inner surface of right upper lid near external canthus; broke the stye, after which the former pain gradually subsided (thirty-third day). Eyes very sensitive to sunlight, on going outdoors at 10 A.M.; he had to close them and walk on the shady, side of the street (ninth day).

Ears

External. Cutting pain externally behind right ear (in mastoid process), going a little way down neck, for two minutes, at 10. 15 P. M. (eighth day). A rather severe, continuous, lancinating pain behind right ear, on a level with meatus and about one inch distant, for two or three minutes, at 10. 30 P. M. (eighth day). Internal. Stitch in right internal ear, fro jaw along Eustachian tube, when chewing on that side, for one minute, at 5. 20 P. M. (seventeenth day). Continued stitch from left ear to left tonsil along Eustachian tube, for ten minutes, at 10 A.M. (sixth day). Sensation in left internal ear, as if it opened and shut twice, at 6. 45 P. M. (fourth day). Transitory sensation of fluttering in right internal ear, as if opening and shutting; this was shortly followed by a similar sensation in left ear, and afterwards in both ears at same time; relieved by putting a finger in each ear; it disappeared in right before occurring in left, and in left before occurring in both (within an hour).

Face

Right side of the face swollen in morning, increasing during day; in afternoon cold air out of doors increased the pain, which was relieved by slight pressure of hand; pain worse on laughing; in evening it became very painful (sixth day); increased; slight pressure of hand and cold water relieved the pain (seventh day). Slight throbbing in left cheek-bone for one minute, at 2. 25 P. M. (fourth day). Lips dry, on waking (sixteenth day). Soreness on pressure under jaw on right side, from angle half way towards symphysis (eighth day).

Mouth

Teeth. Sensation of sharp coldness in first left upper bicuspid, increased by drawing in the air, during the afternoon (ninth day). Dull aching in first lower bicuspid and first upper molar, both of left side, slightly relieved by clenching teeth, at 2. 45 P. M., lasting all day (molar is stopped, all other teeth which have been affected are sound), (sixteenth day). Stitches in a decayed second left upper molar occasionally, especially when touching tooth with cheek or tongue, or biting on tooth (third day); stitches in same tooth, with dull pressing pain during the interval between the stitches; the pains were worse when lying on the painful side; when lying on painless side they went off and he felt asleep; when he awoke it was always on the painful side (third night); the pains continued at intervals, not affected by hot or cold drinks; in evening on entering a warm room the pain increased to a throbbing, with heat of face, especially left side; on going into a cooler atmosphere the pain ceased (fourth day). Shooting in first left upper molar tooth, with sensation of coldness in it, for three minutes, at 4. 20 P. M. (sixth day). Pain in second bicuspid and first molar of right upper jaw, both of which are stopped, at 11 A.M.; towards evening a small swelling on outer side of the corresponding gums (fifth day). Gums. After midnight, gumboil burst with great relief to pain, and towards evening the swelling of the face nearly disappeared (ninth day). Mouth. Clammy feeling in mouth, on waking (third day). Great burning feeling in mouth and fauces, extending into the stomach, not relieved by cold water or anything else. Taste. Disagreeable taste in mouth, which lasted some time, on waking (sixteenth day). Woke at 7. 30 A.M., with a bloody taste in mouth, which went off after cleaning teeth (twenty-third day).

Stomach

Burning, as fro vitriol, in the stomach.

Abdomen

Shifting of flatulence in left side of abdomen, with audible rumbling, when sitting still, going off after standing up for fifteen minutes, at 4. 45 P. M. (third day). Slight pinching and gripping in bowels, as if diarrhoea were coming on, causing, however, only an ordinary stool but with passage of much flatus; all being relieved by stool, at 6 P. M.; much shifting of flatus, with slight pinching pains in bowels, after getting into bed; both symptoms relieved by lying on back for a short time, at 11 P. M. (eleventh day). Pain in right groin as if inguinal hernia would protrude, for ten minutes, when walking, at 10 A.M. (seventeenth day).

Rectum

Desire to evacuate contents of bowels, whenever he thought about it, lasting a few days (third day).

Urinary organs

Severe burning in forepart of the urethra during micturition, and for two minutes afterwards, at 11 P. M. (second day). Urine last night and today much increased, passed much at a time, but not more often than usual; in afternoon urine pale (seventh day); high-colored, in afternoon after standing, considerably loaded with lithates (it was tasted), (eighth day); high-colored, in the morning, with a thick deposit, in the evening (ninth day); slight deposit in evening and night urine (tenth and twelfth day); rather high colored, no deposit (fourteenth day); rather more high-colored, very slight turbidity (fifteenth day); somewhat high-colored (sixteenth day); slightly so (seventeenth day); slightly high-colored, but quite clear (twentieth to twenty- seventh days); occasionally high-colored for six weeks after wards.

Respiratory organs

Tickling at right side of larynx, as if fine dust were collected there, causing a dry cough for three minutes, at 7. 25 P. M. (thirteenth day).

Chest

Sharp sticking pain in right lung, as if knives were being thrust into it fro the front, for five minutes, at 11. 15 A.M. (fifteenth day). Sharp stitch through upper half of left lung, from before backwards, at 9. 30 A.M. (third day). A painful bruised and empty sensation in upper lobe of left lung, extending into left axillae, for three minutes, only when expiring, when lying on left side in bed, at 11 P. M. (twenty-third day). Sides. Sharp pressure on right side of chest, as if the chest were pressed on right lung, for one minute, at 8. 40 A.M. (third day). Transitory stitch in left side, under last rib, arresting breathing, at 9. 30 P. M. (second day). A sudden stitch under last rib of left side, whilst riding in a carriage, at 11. 30 A.M. (eighteenth day). Sharp shooting in right side of chest, worse on deep inspiration, for two minutes, at 10. 45 P. M. (eleventh day). A sharp shoot up right side of body fro right hypochondrium to middle of right side, causing him to start, at 12. 40 P. M. (fifteenth day).

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
In 1881 Allen published A Critical Revision of the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica.
