      HERING. The Element.


      Great dulness, with complete insensibility and indifference to his surroundings.

Very forgetful, especially in business: during slumber, however, he remembers all that he had forgotten.

A kind of stammering; he uses the syllables of words in wrong connections; therefore pronounces some words incorrectly.

Difficult comprehension. Total unfitness for any kind of work.

Great talkativeness when excited.

Mental labor fatigues him much.


      Vertigo: on lifting head or rising up; on moving about, with nausea, vomiting, faintness; worse after breakfast and dinner.

Inner Head

      Headache from lemonade, tea or wine; every afternoon.

Violent stinging over left eye, when walking in the sun, or from strong odors; with increased secretion of urine, and melancholy.

Outer Head

      Hair falls off when combing; also of eyebrows, whiskers and genitals; tingling-itching on scalp in evening, oozing after scratching; tension and sensation of contraction of scalp.


      Itching vesicles on edges of eyelids and on eye-brows.

Spasmodic twitching of left eyeball.


      Ear stopped.

More ear-wax, hardening in his deaf ear.


      Itching in nose and on borders of wings.

Inclination to bore fingers into nose.

Yellow, thick, jell-like mucus in nose.

Discharge of dark blood from nose.

Eating and Drinking

      After eating: violent beating all over body, worse in abdomen; must lie down.

Salt food aggravates.

After eating: From lemonade, tea, wine:.


      Searching pain in region of liver, worse in taking a long breath, with sensitiveness to external pressure; followed by a red, itching rash in region of liver.

Stitches in spleen when walking.

Stool etc.

      Stool: hard and so impacted that it requires mechanical aid; mucus or blood passes with last portion; contains threads of fecal matter like hair.

Papescent stool, with tenesmus and feeling in anus as after a hard stool.


      Dark, scanty; red in the evening.

Sediment coarse red, sandy.

Involuntary urination when walking; drips after stool or micturition.

Male Sexual Organs

      Erection slow, insufficient; semen emitted too rapidly and with long continued thrill; weak, ill-humored after an embrace, weakness in loins.

Semen thin, without normal odor.

Lewd thoughts, but physically impotent.

Prostatic juice oozes while sitting, during sleep when walking, and at stool.

Itching on the scrotum.

Female Sexual Organs

      Catamenia copious and dark.


      During pregnancy throbbing in abdomen.


      Voice husky when beginning to sing, or from talking long; hawks transparent lumps every morning, sometimes bloody.


      Frequent deep breathing with moaning.


      In morning, straining in chest, with expectoration of mucus and blood.

Neck Back

      Neck stiff on turning head.

Pain as from lameness in small of back, in morning.

Upper Limbs

      Tearing in hands at night, with cracking in wrists.

Emaciation of hands.

Itching in palms; vesicles on and between fingers.

Dry scaly eruptions, itching palms; syphilitic eruptions.

Lower Limbs

      Cracking of the knee-joint on bending it.

Flat ulcers on the lower legs.

Emaciation on the legs.

Itching around the ankle, in the evening; blisters on toes.

Cramps in calves and soles.

Legs feel weak, with fear of paralysis after typhus.

C. Hering
Hering got the degree of M. D. from the University of Wuezburg with highest honours. The theme of his thesis was "De'Medicina Futura" (The medicine of future). Hering left Germany for West Indies and finally arrived at Philadelphia in Jan, 1833. He established a homeopathic school at Allentown, Pennsylvania, commonly known as "Allentown Academy". Soon he became very popular as a physician. He is known as the 'Father of Homeopathy' in America.
