SPHERE OF ACTION
Acts upon the cerebro-spinal system, more especially affecting the spinal cord. Its main sphere of action is on the nervous centres, which it paralyzes from below upwards. The loss of power in the lower extremities-which is very characteristic-is accompanied with numbness and neuralgic pains in the back and legs. As the poison advances up the spinal cord, paroxysms of spasmodically suspended respiration and palpitation of the heart manifest its influence. (Conium acts very similarly upon the cord.) Also has some action upon the mucous tissues.
