Respiratory symptoms of homeopathic remedy Mercurius, described by Van Denburg in his book, Therapeutics of Respiratory system, cough & coryza, published in 1916….


(MERCURIUS VIVUS).

CORYZA.

FLUENT CORYZA.

Hoarse voice, burning, rawness, and tickling in larynx.

Fluent coryza, corrosive : inside of nose inflamed : full at root; stopped up : watery mucus trickles from posterior nares into throat, causing hawking: throat sore : chilly by day; obliged to lie down.

DISCHARGES –

Corrosive, watery; violent, dry cough.

Nose sore, red, tender.

Eyes full of tears; much sneezing, head dull, redness of alae, voice hoarse.

WORSE –

Feels bad in warm room, but cannot bear cold air.

In cold, wet weather; or from least current of cold air.

SENSATIONS –

Throat feels dry, but the mouth is full of saliva.

Rawness and burning in nose and throat.

Fullness over root of nose, nostrils stopped.

APPEARANCES –

Coppery, dark red color of throat, which is painful on swallowing; but he feels he must swallow.

COUGH.

DRY COUGH –

Dry cough with fluent coryza; burning, rawness, and tickling in larynx; worse from least current of air.

Violent, dry cough at night; feels and sounds as if everything in chest were dry.

Dry, fatiguing, racking cough in two paroxysms (Pulsatilla) particularly at night, as if head and chest would burst (sub- acute).

Moist, barking cough, with sound of mucus, but none is raised; day or night.

Dry cough, from tickling in larynx and upper chest, sometimes with vomiting.

Dry, raw, burning exhausting cough, with burning and soreness in fauces and bronchi; worse at night; expectoration of tough, watery-like saliva, foul, with streaks of blood.

SPUTA–

None, everything sounds and feels dry.

Watery, spittle-like, stringy, blood-streaked.

Offensive, bloody, chronic in tuberculosis.

Acrid or yellowish mucus, at times tinged with blood, and tasting saltish or putrid (chronic bronchitis).

WORSE–

At night, but present by day.

Lying on left side.

From heat; not better from sweating.

Only at night; or, only by day; alternating cough.

From least current of air, cough and coryza.

BETTER–

Asthmatic breathing better from tobacco smoke and in cold air, but not in a draft.

LARYNX–

Acute laryngitis; burning, rawness and tickling with fluent coryza.

Chronic laryngitis; voice hoarse, severe burning in larynx.

More tickling from phlegm. (Chronic).

SENSATIONS–

Cough from dryness and tickling in bronchi.

Dryness, rawness, and burning in throat and bronchi.

Tickling cough sometimes causes vomiting.

SPECIAL–

Sweating does not relieve (also, in Hepar sul.).
