COUGH.
DRY COUGH –
Short, dry, distressing, nervous cough, from organic heart disease; begins as soon as she lies down (mitral stenosis).
Spasmodic contraction of throat and esophagus; drinks gurgle audibly in stomach.
Almost constant, dry, tickling cough; mouth and throat feel as if burnt.
Dry cough, with a whistling sound.
Suffocative, dry cough, with severe localized pleural pain; pulse soft and quick.
Loose cough; raises great amount of phlegm, spotted with distinct blood-clots.
SPUTA –
Generally none; cough very dry, whistling.
Abundant, jelly-like, dotted with blood-points, or clots.
WORSE –
Evening; at night; lying down.
From warmth; eating or drinking; from motion.
RESPIRATION –
Dyspnea, as if the lungs would not expand sufficiently, or as if they were pressed against the spine.
PULSE –
Slow, irregular, small, imperceptible; tendency to cyanosis (from heart failure).
SPECIAL –
Usually an extremely nervous, excitable condition is present in all cases.
