CORYZA.

FLUENT CORYZA-

Must continually blow bad-smelling thin mucus out of nose; nose drops thin, sticky, yellowish fluid.

Suppressed fluent coryza in scrofulous children.

Chronic, fluent coryza; discharge thick and purulent, sometimes tinged with blood.

Sneezing during and after cough.

DISCHARGES-

None; or, thin mucus, which is sticky, yellowish, and bad- smelling.

Chronic, purulent discharges, thick and sometimes tinged with blood.

COUGH.

DRY, HOARSE COUGH-

Croupy, hoarse, barking cough after exposure to cold winds (Ac.).

Hoarse, rattling of mucus, which the child does not cough up: High fever, red face, sensitive larynx.

Croupy cough, deep, hoarse, barking; with loss of voice, slight suffocating spasms.

Fever, red face, quick pulse.

Worse just before midnight, or toward morning.

Violent, dry, hoarse, croupy cough.

Causes retching; breathing short and whistling.

Child, somnolent, the cough wakes him; he grasps the larynx in great fear; face red, eyes protruding; high fever, hot sweat, quick pulse; frequent desire for drink.

Frequent throwing of the head backward to relieve the breathing.

Dry, spasmodic cough, from tickling on one side of the throat.

Dry, nervous cough all night, as from dust in the throat; expectoration only in the morning.

Dry, spasmodic cough, from tickling in larynx, with retching.

LOOSE, CHRONIC COUGH-

Chronic cough, with purulent sputa.

SPUTA-

None, cough dry; laryngeal tickling; one side, or generally Very difficult; or, none in croupy cough; sounds loose, but none is raise.

Only in morning.

Abundant and purulent in chronic cases.

Loose by day, none at night.

WORSE-

From least exposure to cold, or to drafts (Rhus tox.).

At night; just before midnight, or towards morning; not relieved by sweating.

After eating.

BETTER-

From covering up warm, and keeping warm.

LARYNX AND VOICE-

Very hoarse; or voice quite lost.

Very sensitive to inspired air.

Larynx very sensitive to touch.

Uvula flabby and elongated.

RESPIRATION-

Tightness of breathing; worse lying down; must sit up.

Difficult breathing, preventing sleep.

Suffocative, anxious breathing; child frequently throws head backward to get breath.

Short; anxious with hoarse cough.

PULSE-

Hard, full, rapid (acute cases).

FEVER-

“Hepar should never be given when there is hot, dry skin; the child is always sweaty and weak” (T. F. Allen).

“Sweating of head or hands, body dry and hot” (Hering).

“Sweats easily from even the least motion” (Hering).

SENSATIONS-

Very sensitive to cold.

Tickling on one side of the throat, causing dry cough.

Dust in the throat;tickling in larynx.

Soreness in the chest.

Of suffocation when lying down; must sit up.

Of great tenderness of larynx, so that it is sensitive to touch.

Pain while crying; child cries while coughing.

Of tickling in the throat, the uvula being relaxed and elongated.

SPECIAL-

See “Fever.

Very sensitive to pain.

Sore parts are very painful to touch.

Exceedingly sensitive to cold, or cold drafts; must keep warmly covered.

“Hepar should be given very cautiously, in the later stages of membranous croup, as overdosing is apt to render the cough dry and tight; Spongia should be given after Hepar has aggravated the cough. (T. F. Allen).
