THERAPEUTICS OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEM MATERIA MEDICA by M.W. VAN DENBURG

CORYZA

Frequent sneezing at the beginning of a cold; better in the open air.

Voice hoarse.

Smell very acute, especially for bad odors.

From exposure to dry, cold air, or cold winds.

DRY CORYZA

Headache, fever, thirst.

Restless and anxious; sleepless.

Nose stopped.

Roaring in the ears.

Throat sore, burning, dark red, tingling, or constricted.

Great thirst; or no thirst.

Bitter taste of everything but water.

Nose and throat dry : parched, scraped; sore; painful swallowing.

FLUENT CORYZA

Fresh colds – Nose runs clear hot water drop by drop; constantly wiping nose.

Frequent sneezing.

Fluent, especially in morning.

Throat tingles, prickles, burns, is numb; constricted; painful swallowing.

SENSATIONS

Nose dry; tingling; sneezing; running hot water.

Throat; dry; tingling; dumb; constricted; painful swallowing; burning; raw, scraped, dark red; sharp pricking pains.

Headache : fever; face red; pulse quick; skin hot and dry.

Temperament: anxious, restless, complaining, sleepless; wants something done to relieve at once.

Worse by exposure to drafts; to dry cold air; to high cold winds; riding in the cold.

Better in the open air, but easily chilled by every draft.

COUGH.

DRY COUGH Ringing, whistling, from burning and tingling in the larynx.

Wakens from sleep, worse at night, but present by day.

Constant, short dry cough, day and night; larynx raw and sensitive to inspired air.

Dry, hoarse, loud, rough, croupy cough, with feeling of suffocation.

Cannot breathe freely; lungs will not expand.

SPUTA

None; cough dry; throat and chest inflamed and painful. Scanty, blood-streaked; thin frothy, cherry-red.

Of pure blood, which comes up easily.

WORSE

After exposure to drafts.

Exposure to cold air; or high winds.

At night; or lying on back.

After drinking, eating, or smoking, Breathing cold air, unpleasant to larynx.

Lying on either side.

During inspiration, with feeling of weight, oppression, anxiety and suffocation.

BETTER –

Lying on back.

During expiration.

In open air, coryza better.

LARYNX AND VOICE –

Excessive tickling in the larynx.

Larynx feels raw and burning; and is sensitive to inspired air, and to touch.

Voice : hoarse, unsteady, tremulous : speaking painful, provoking dry cough.

Croup : awaking from first sleep: child is in agony; throws itself about, and is very impatient.

Short dry cough.

Loud expiration ending in cough.

Throat: Dryness of throat; rawness of throat.

Burning and scraping in throat.

Constriction and tingling in throat.

Dark-redness, and acute inflammation of throat.

CHEST AND RESPIRATION –

Acute active congestions of chest.

SENSATIONS –

A feeling of suffocation increased by inspiration, with short, dry cough.

Tightness of chest; pressure, weight and burning under the sternum.

Sharp stitches in the chest; worse breathing.

Burning : transient; or occasional shooting pins in chest.

Sharp pains with every breath, or motion; with heat and burning.

Dullness on percussion; acute congestion of lungs; painful breathing.

Great weight on chest.

Cannot breathe freely, with feeling as if lungs would not expand.

Larynx feels raw and is sensitive to inspired air.

Sensation of band around the chest.

Must lie on back all the time.

Formication and tingling in chest and along spine-in arms and hands-in various parts, especially the throat.

PULSE – Rapid, hard, short, with high tension of arteries; red fact, high fever.

First stage :

Slow, feeble, weak, imperceptible; also, in

Second stage, collapse.

Pulse like a thread; patient in great agony, sits straight up; can hardly breathe; vomiting and general sweat.

TEMPERAMENT –

Great fear of death, and anxiety.

Very irritable, and restless.

Uneasy, nervous, restless, anxious.

High nervous tension.

PECULIAR STATES –

Acute congestions of sthenic type.

Very painful congestions of respiratory tract.

Acute local hyperemia.

Potencies : 2x to 30x, and higher.
