MENTAL ESSENTIALS OF HYOSCYAMUS

The remedy under present consideration occupies an important place in unaccepted or sudden termination of love; in perversion of the love impulse; takes on violent sex urge. In incident exposure, which may be active or passive in delirium, resulting from depravity or some strange mental quirk.

The remedy fits particularly in the present mode of social tension, the jealousy and envy resulting from the intense struggle of the classes, the feverish desire for wealth and power, and the indulgence of the sensory functions. Like Stramonium, Hyoscyamus is in some cases an active remedy, destructive to the tranquillity of the organism and reserve energy, making it difficult to differentiate at times. There seems to be a relationship between the life force and electrical cross currents filling the atmosphere everywhere. This may have some bearing upon the intense emotional activity abundantly displayed in modern life.

Hyoscyamus has a riotous display of destructive emotive factors, resulting often from a long repression or unnatural habits of sex function. The active gonadal state covering a long period takes on an explosive form, exhibiting vicious antisocial symptoms. The centralized perverse constitutional expression leads to criminal acts, which may be averted through the benign influence of this or other correlated potentized remedies.

It is in these perplexing states we come to truly appreciate homoeopathy, to attain a deeper respect for the power to render good inherent in the proper use of our remedies.

The remedy under present consideration occupies an important place in unaccepted or sudden termination of love; in perversion of the love impulse; takes on violent sex urge. In incident exposure, which may be active or passive in delirium, resulting from depravity or some strange mental quirk.

There is violent or uncontrollable jealousy, accompanied either by vicious abuse or weeping and hysteria.

An active outburst of reproach of others, to be followed by painful self-inspection and bewailing of wrong having been done. This stage of self-condemnation advances until there is locating of life ( Thuja), a changed mental reaction to environment, hallucinations, inability to perform daily tasks, persistence and fixity of wrong thinking, with ultimate suicidal disposition from the though confusion.

Despair, like Arsenicum, Aurum, Mercurius, Psorinum, Stramonium and Thuja, is a characteristic of Hyoscyamus; a horrible anguish and disorganized personality; dissatisfied; peevish, desires a change of any kind from distraction.

Again we find aversion to correction and sharp words; over- sensitive; wrong impression about actions of others; over-active imagination. Fear of people; sensitive to strangers; becomes frightened in presence of strangers. Fear to be alone, > from light and working. Suspicion is strong in the remedy: of being poisoned; seems unbearable when husband speaks to someone else; complains of many wrongs.

There is an instability of the nervous system, showing in irresolution, which more or less influence the entire life. Long and careful treatment is needed to gradually level this fluctuation.

Unfortunately there has crept into our literature the effort to separate the remedies into acute and chronic classifications. There is an element of truth in the statement, but not to the extent advocated by some. Hyoscyamus comes under this head, and although we find it meets the violent acute conditions its sphere of action in chronicity is often overlooked. The symptoms of mental disorder within its field of action had a distinct underlying state of chronic fearfulness, which more or less rules daily decisions of the individual. It tinctures and accounts for many strange actions of the remedy.

These ingrained symptoms, often hidden and difficult to uncover, round out the questionable aspects of a given case and bring into bold relief a remedy which may routinely be labelled acute. The exceptional result obtained proves the universality of the Law of Similars.

The genius of homoeopathy, in my opinion, is found in the development of the latent power beyond the range of the stereotyped experience found in the textbooks. Homoeopathic materia medica is a vital and elastic entity, which in a true application opens an unexplored realm of creative and curative energy, far more potent than any one of us can conceive. We have no gauge to measure the subtle changes brought into motion within the economy.

There is a passion for work under the remedy, similar to Lachesis and Tarentula.

Unconsciousness; stupor; does not reply to questions; makes irrelevant answers; confusion; memory weakened; stupid; does not know where he is. Delirium; talks of his business; scolds; indistinct, muttering loquacity; makes no complaints; ridiculous gestures and actions; loud talking; foolish laughter; deep depression of spirits.

In conclusion: Hyoscyamus is an important remedy in all forms of emotional discord; in spasmodic affections; and in cerebral conditions of typhoid character.
