The selection of a correct remedy is homoeopathy is a difficult task. No doubt remedies are to be prescribed according to the “totality of symptoms” but there is a safe guide which enables us to hit upon the right remedy. This is called Intuitive knowledge. Great patience is required to cultivate it and unless our mind is purified, this knowledge never awakens.
The mind of an ordinary man is always filled with doubts and difficulties and the more the impurity, the more time will be required for the selection of a remedy. A pure mind is free from all these impediments. As soon as any difficulty is presented to a pure mind, the Intuitive knowledge comes into play and the solution is found easily and correctly.
Intuitive knowledge was known to Indian Yogis long ago. It is the real knowledge (Sahan Gyan) as laid down in the Gita. According to the modern psychologists, knowledge is of two kinds: Logical and Intuitive. Logical knowledge is derived from the study of books, observation and reflection; while Intuitive knowledge is the result of self-purification.
Our mind is made impure from a variety of causes, the most important of which is the multiplicity of desires. Desires are the dirt on the mind. If we practise self-control and do not yield to what our mind wants, if dedicate fruits of our action to God daily and live according to the rules laid down in our scriptures, if we take Gods name for hours and hours together, then after a decade we shall see that our mind has become pure to a great extent. Shastric injunctions should be strictly followed for Shastras are noting but records of verified truths.
There is another thing which I wish to say in this connection. Salt should be excluded from our diet. Salt multiplies desires and makes us extremely sentimental and egoistic. It decreases our reasoning power and disturbs the equilibrium of our vitality which is a combination of Will, Understanding and Ego. Salt that is necessary for the substance of our body can be had from rice and the different vegetables we eat daily. Sanyasis do not take salt for these reasons.
Heredity is also responsible for our impure mind. a corrupt mid begets a corrupt mind. We know that, like the body, the mind is inherited. People whose parents lead virtuous lives naturally beget sons of a religious turn of mind. Those whose parents lead undisciplined lives produce sons of a materialistic bent of mind. This is generally the rule though there are exceptions.
Intuitive knowledge is an asset. When any disease proves incurable, this Intuitive knowledge does not come to our help.
India has become free. If we wish to give anything new, we must neither read too many books nor borrow knowledge from others, for borrowed knowledge kills power of original thinking. We should develop our power of observation and acquire first-hand knowledge as the Germans do and then we will be educated in the right line.
