HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT OF TYPHOID FEVER



Involuntary stools, anxious dreams, with waking with fright and outcries; frightful, delirious dreams, as if cut and hacked by soldiers, with desire to escape. Wakes weary and unrefreshed; anxious perspiration which prevents sleep, with sighing; short cough, and pressure on chest; great heaviness of head; Bleeding of nose at 3 Oclock a.m. face pale, yellow.”.

Aggravation: Motion, exertion, touch, warmth, warm food, suppressed discharges, stooping, closing eyes. Lying on painless side. Motion of eyes. Morning. Hot weather.

Amelioration: After eructation. While lying down. Lying on the back. Lying on painful side. When quiet, from cold things, cold food. Pressure. Rest. Cold.

Compare: Nux-v., Gels. Ant-t., Arn., Bapt., Bell., Puls., Phos., Rhus-t.

Dose: 30th. 200th.

NUX VOM.

Leaders.

1. Very red face.

2. Chilliness even during high fever; least uncovering brings on chilliness.

3. Strong inclination to lie down, dreads movement.

4. Frequent and ineffectual desire for stool or passes little at a time, better after stool. Ineffectual desire to urinate. Ineffectual desire to vomit. Wants to vomit but cannot.

5. Morning aggravations.

Feels worse in the morning soon after awaking.

6. Tongue black and cracked with bright red edges.

First half of tongue clean, posterior covered with deep fur. White, yellow, cracked edges.

7. Can not sleep after 3 A.M. until towards morning.

8. Better after a short sleep unless aroused.

9. Body burning hot (Bell.) especially face; yet can not move or uncover without feeling chilly.

10. Cough when lying on back. Cough brings on bursting headache and bruised pain in epigastric region.

11. Nose stuffed up at night and outdoors or alternates between nostrils.

12. Cannot bear noises, odors, light.

13. Very irritable.

14. Avoids open air.

Mind: Over sensitiveness to external impressions; noise, smell, light and music are unbearable and affect him much.

Anxiety and restlessness in the evening.

Time passes too slowly.

Fiery excited temperament.

Excitable, sensitive, impatient.

Does not want to be touched.

Even the least ailment affects her greatly.

Sullen; fault finding.

Cannot bear reading or conversation.

Irritable, wishes to be alone.

Despondent and buoyant alternately.

Ailments after continued mental labour. Worse after mental exertion.

Head: Vertigo when stooping; falls forward; heat and redness of face with vertigo.

Burning in the forehead on awaking and after eating.

Bruised sensation of the brain.

Scalp sensitive to touch or to wind better from being warmly covered.

Fetid sweat of one-half of the head and face which is cold.

Eyes: Lachrymation in morning. Photophobia in the morning.

Nose: Smell before the nose like old cheese, or brim-stone.

Nosebleed during sleep or in the morning. Nosebleed preceded by red cheeks.

Face: Yellow around mouth, eyes or nose. Twitching of the muscles in the evening on lying down.

Burning redness of face with heat.

Painful peeling of the lips.

Lower jaw hangs down.

Mouth: Tongue, first half clean; posterior covered with deep fur.

Tongue white, yellow, cracked edges.

The tongue is black and dark red and cracked on the edges.

Heaviness of the tongue with difficulty of speech.

Tongue heavily coated white or yellow; black any dark red, cracked on edges.

First half of tongue clean, sometimes red and shining, posterior covered with deep fur.

Tongue dry, brownish or blackish, with bright red margins.

Sour taste in mouth. Sour breath.

Fetid, putrid and cadaverous smell from mouth.

Great dryness, principally of the forepart of the mouth and tongue especially after midnight.

Yellowish white mucus in mouth.

Bloody saliva (night).

Bitter and pasty mouth.

Mouth dry parched, without much thirst. (Apis. Nux-Mos. Puls.).

Bad taste in the mouth in the morning.

Offensive odor from the mouth.

Bitter taste in mouth esp. in the morning.

Stomach: Thirst with aversion to water.

Greenish vomiting.

Epigastrium distended and sensitive.

Longing for brandy, beer, fat food or chalk.

Aversion to bread.

Tastelessness of all food.

Nausea in the morning.

Wants to vomit but cannot.

Vomiting of bile; black substance; slime; sour mucus.

Stool: Bilious diarrhoea or constipation.

Putrid, watery, excoriating diarrhoea.

Burning in abdomen with desire to stool without being able to accomplish anything.

Constipation, Stool insufficient, black, hard, often streaked with blood; ineffectual efforts to go to stool.

Stools like pitch with blood.

After stool feeling as if not finished, as if part remained unexpelled.

Urine: Ineffectual urging to urinate.

Cough: When lying on back.

Limbs: Neck stiff with heaviness.

Burning or tearing in back.

Backache, must sit up to turn over in bed.

Shoulders pain as if bruised.

Veins in the hands enlarged.

Hands cold and sweaty with cold nose.

Cramp in calves at night.

Bruised pain in limbs, in joints.

Wants to sit or lie down.

Tendency to faint.

Yawning, stretching, chilliness.

Feeling of soreness all over the body in the morning.

When he walks he drags the feet, he can not lift them up.

Pains and debility in all limbs better lying down.

Sleep: Sleepy in early evening but sleepless at night.

Drowsy all day.

Stupor, lower jaw dropped, deep sleep.

Awakens at 3 A.M.

Better after a short sleep unless aroused.

Generalities: Dark hair. Worse right side. Humming in the ears.

Reddish yellow face.

Increase of saliva.

Aversion to coffee.

Strong aversion to the open air.

Bleeding from inner parts, especially if the blood is dark.

Inclination to lie down and be alone.

Nervous debility.

Red coloured face, and patient feeling as though he was sitting before a hot fire.

Pain as if bruised in the outer parts, especially where the patient is cross about it, does not wish to see any one or talk about it.

Sensation of heaviness in outer and inner parts.

Sensation of roughness in inner parts, sensation of tightness or tension in inner parts.

Heat with anxiety, with restlessness, aversion to undress or uncover, perspiration on one side only.

When perspiring, wants to throw off the covers.

Sleeplessness after midnight.

Sour taste of expectoration.

Sour taste of mouth.

Vomiting of sour matter.

Epistaxis with dark blood.

No desire to hold communication with any one; gives surely answers; does not wish to be touched. Wants to be alone, is quiet and sullen.

Urine red and fetid.

Gastric and bilious symptoms.

Legs feel weak; head heavy.

Face pale and waxy.

Soreness of liver and spleen which are sensitive to least pressure.

Vomits bitter fluids and sour mucus.

Emaciation, anxiety, great weakness of whole body.

Chilly on the least movement, repugnance to cold, or cold air.

Sweat relieves pains in limbs.

Sweat one-sided or only on upper part of body.

Sweat sour, clammy, offensive.

Cold sweat on face.

“During fever a round spot at the pit of the stomach two inches in diameter, feels hot to the patient but is cold to touch.”.

Heat with great thirst.

Aversion to uncovering when in bed, day or night; desire to uncover, but chilled when uncovering.

Great heat, whole body burning hot, yet patient must be covered up.

Roaring in ears in fever.

Numbness of limbs.

Sensation of chilliness on the back and limbs.

Aching in the limbs.

Intolerable drawing pain through the thighs and legs that obliged him to draw them up and stretch them out.

Men of active, “rushing” business habits.

Nervous, dyspeptic from worry, care.

Too much mental and too little physical exertion.

Irregular, unseasonable, rapid eating.

Too much coffee, tobacco, stimulants cause disease.

Late suppers, late hours of debauchees.

Morning aggravation of symptoms.

“If I could only vomit I would be so much better.”.

Bad effects of overeating, highly seasoned, food, sedentary habits, loss of sleep, sitting on cold stones.

Haemorrhoidal subjects.

Sour breath.

Morning sleep aggravates all complaints.

Heaviness of body, indolence and dread of every movement, with great desire to remain lying (Bry.) or in sitting position in which almost all the pains are ameliorated.

Suppressed catarrh.

Trembling all over, mostly of the hands.

Constant desire to defecate and urinate (without effect).

Red face and ill humor.

Contraction of the jaws like lockjaw.

When walking legs tremble, unsteady gait; drags feet.

Pulse: Hard, full, frequent.

Small, quick.

Fourth or fifth beat intermitting.

“Typhoid, sedentary men, severe, headache, constipation with frequent ineffectual desire for stool, very high fever, bright red face, constant desire to be covered, chilly if he moves or is uncovered in the least.”.

“In the selection of Nux-vom in typhoid fevers you are guided by the gastric and bilious symptoms, bitter taste in the mouth, especially in the morning, nausea, vomiting of bile, and characteristic constipation of the drug. The weakness which necessarily belongs to the typhoid state is expressed under Nux- vom. by a strong inclination to lie down. The nights are passed in nervous excited sleep; slight noises cause him to start. He moans and whimpers in his slumber and his dreams are full of bustle and hurry. He may even be delirious.”.

“Typhoid, in the early stage; if there be chilliness on slightest movement; dryness of the front of the mouth and tip of the tongue; intolerance of the impressions on the external senses, all of which seem much exaggerated; great; sensitiveness to the open air; thirst with aversion to water; strong desire to lie down (Bry.), and considerable relief on doing so.”.
