CASE I. Arsenicum. –

Little Eddle was aroused from sleep by excruciating pains in stomach, chest and head. His mother stated that he frequently suffered just such pains from indigestion. On this day he had partaken freely of ice water and ice cream, neither of which he was allowed when at home. He complained of the light hurting his eyes and fairly howled with the pains, which also from time to time extended down into the right leg. Ars. 200 gave almost instantaneous relief, and in half an hour he was again asleep.

CASE II. Phosphorus.

Physicians frequently complain that they can not get symptoms from the patient. By means of a printed set of questions which I use for persons at a distance, the symptoms in the following case were obtained. They are certainly numerous enough to satisfy the most critical. I had never seen the patient and had to content myself with her description. Her words and phraseology are used throughout, except where clearness demanded a change:.

On the 25th day of April, 1890, Mrs. -wrote me regarding her case, as follows: I have been sick so long, have tried so many doctors, have paid out nearly all we have and am still no better. I am completely discouraged; think I can never be any better. It hurts me so much to write that I fear I can never answer all your questions, but will do the best I can never answer all your questions, but will do the best I can, hoping once more to find relief, at least, from the suffering I endure. I will soon be thirty years old. Hair dark brown and very heavy. Complexion very sallow. All the doctors say I have jaundice very bad. Deep circles around the eyes; color of the eyes, grey. Am of medium height.

Have pain mostly in the back of the head and neck, such a pressure and severe pain most of the time; when tired can find no rest, no place where it is easy; I feel like having a hard bunch to lie upon and press the back of the head.

Have terrible headaches very often; then it is all over the head. Sick at the stomach usually, but can not vomit. A feeling as though the head would burst if moved or if I spoke. Can only lie perfectly still, it hurts me so to speak. The cords of the back of the head and neck and throat draw and cramp so can hardly swallow or speak when the head is so bad. When the head aches there is much pain in the eyeballs, back and over the eyes.

Some of the time the eyes are blurred; smart as though hot water was around them, especially when the head is bad. Most of the time the head feels so heavy and tired, as though my neck was not strong enough to hold it up. It hurts to bend down, as in writing, or to turn the head to the left more than to the right.

Have catarrh; am troubled some with dropping from head into the throat when reading. The teeth were good until I took so much medicine; have now many of them filled; eye teeth very bad, am troubled at times with them.

Appetite at times poor, at others good. Tongue always has a thick coating, at times white, at others dark. Breath is offensive. No unusual thirst. Dislike meats, cake, etc. Longing for acids, the sourer the better. Eat lemons clear. Pickles can never get too sour for me. Can not get too much salt or pepper to suit my taste, but try to use reason in it. Sometimes sour tastes in the mouth.

Have terrible hiccough when I am sick, always very loud. Can not make it quiet or it seems it would kill me, hurts my stomach and back so much. Folks always say it sounds as through it were death hiccough. Nausea of the stomach at times. Spit up my food always after eating; keeps coming up in my mouth no matter what I eat. Have pains mostly over the ovaries-at times sharp pains in the stomach.

Terrible constipation always; can get no common thing to move the bowels. Have to take something all the time; five times as big a dose as any one else, then they will sometimes move once. Never acts like physic. Seems to clog near the end of the spine. Stools are dark and in chunks usually. Never have a natural passage without medicine or injections. Some of the time after taking medicine stools thinner but not digested at all, and such a lot of mucus; large patches of white mucus all through it.

Have blind piles now, do not trouble me all the time. Formerly had the bloody piles very bad. The urine has a strong smell and is of a dark color; the sediment small in quantity. The urine smarts badly when passing it. The menses are usually too early by three or four days. Last time just four weeks. Occasionally are a day or two too late. The color is dark and muddy looking. The last time did not look like blood; at first no color and then so gray and hot much of it.

Leucorrhoea is now better. Last summer was very bad with ulceration and had much leucorrhoea; thick, shiny long strings of it and bloody, but am now better. I took treatment which helped me so much in this direction. The first day of menstruation I suffer much pain, cramp, etc. Terrible pain in the back, bowels and limbs; feel all broken to pieces all over.

Do not cough much. Throat fills with phlegm when singing. I hawk and raise, some mornings only, a little yellow matter. I used to sing a great deal. Could sing as easily as I could breath, but two years ago had a terrible sickness of six months’ duration. I had laryngitis and nearly died. Since then can sing but little I am so weak-tire out so soon. I lived in my music and it nearly kills me to think I can not sing any more. Sang a great deal in public. Hope if I can ever get strong my voice will return.

Pressure and pains of a drawing character in the back of the neck. the worst trouble I have is terrible pain in the back. If I had a new back and liver I would be all right. Suffer night and day with my back; worse at my neck, between my shoulders and across the small of the back, but the whole length of the spine is very sore and painful; feels as though it had been broken all to pieces and struck together again.

Feels as if breaking all the time, and as though it were a little sore holding up such a burden. Can not hold my head up long at time, it is so painful> When I lie down flat, seems as though back was breaking; can almost hear the bones crack. I have to take the pillows out by degrees until I get only one pillow under my head. When back is bad an perfectly prostrated, can not be up on my feet to save my life-all strength is gone.

The lungs are healthy. A good deal of palpitation of the heart. Sharp darting pains through the heart. Aching of the knee bones. Sleep very poorly. Never can sleep in the day time and but little the first part of the night, head hurts so, and I am so wide awake. When worn out fall to sleep only to have the nightmare, and wake up so tired. Never any fever heat, only the hot pain in the back of the head; that is so hot.

Cold feet, and feel chilly summer and winter. Never get too warm in hot weather. Pulse never rapid; very slow and sluggish. Perspiration slight and only under the arms. Feel better mornings; by night get so tired can hardly stand it; nerves all worn out. Excitement tires me fearfully; get so nervous.

Have been married nine years; have one child seven years old. Had one miscarriage three years ago; have never been as well since. Two years ago I had laryngitis which ran into nervous prostration and spinal irritation. Was so I could not sit up for six months and had to lie flat upon my back. have never been able to do a day’s work since. Some of the time am up and some of the time sick in bed.

Had the “grippe” in January and have been so had since then. was very sick, but all the trouble was with my back and stomach, and I do not get as well as I was before. i just drag out a miserable existence-a trouble to myself and all about me. My back holds me here. Have a great deal of trouble in the region of the liver. Have had cutting pains in the liver and just below the right nipple for five years.

I hurt my back by being thrown from a horse when about thirteen years of age. Always suffered terribly during menstruation until my child was born. I took treatment of a noted gynecologist (homoeopathic), but was no better. Had spasms of the womb every month. Was sick in bed one month and flowed for ten days; now flow only four days.

Nine years ago had spinal meningitis; suffered more than tongue can tell. Had my death published twice at that time; then followed nervous prostration. Have never seen a well day since. At that time went just two months without eating a morsel of anything. The doctors kept me alive by beef tea injections. Was on my back then and sick for one year.

Now I have done the best I could to tell you how I am. I am so prostrated I can hardly move; so tired all the time and in such pain. I so long to get well, so I can go to my husband who is over a hundred miles away from me.

Prescription, Phosphorus cm one dose, and patient requested to write me again in one week if no better. If better to wait two or three weeks. No answer was received, even at the end of six weeks. No answer was received, even at the end of six weeks, but from a neighbor, the lady’s pastor, I learned that she improved so rapidly, that at the end of three weeks she was able to take the train and go to her husband.

Some kind but misguided friends gave her some celery bitters to take with her, but my informant could not say whether she afterwards used them or not. So far I have never heard directly from the patient.

CASE III. Stramonium. –

One of the most cures I ever saw was accomplished by Stramonium. A child three years of age was suddenly taken with a high fever, very rapid pulse, some vomiting and talkative delirium. This had lasted some five or more hours when I arrived at the bedside.

The face was red and puffy, the pulse 140, the temperature 103. The child-recognized no one, but talked incessantly; could not be quieted. All the indications pointed to inflammation of the brain. Stramonium 200 was given, and in less than an hour the child was peacefully sleeping, with no recurrence of the symptoms on awakening.
