A week later the character of this husband began to ameliorate. He had only temporary hot-headedness. He did not tell lies, he was sulky only for half or one hour.
Mental amelioration increased gradually. He was even willing to be serviceable to his own relatives. His wife was very much happy and regretted not to have consulted me earlier for that happy cure.
Case VI
A wicked husband, sullen, jealous and drunkard Cured by Lachesis 200; Sulphur 5,000.
A sullen, wicked, jealous husband used to drink since three years every day i.e. thirty days every month. He neglected his wife, his children, his business and has almost devoured his whole fortune.
The 19th November, 1879: I gave him, like the preceding cases 6 to 7 globules of Lachesis 200, only once.
The 17th December: He is not more jealous and was becoming less and less sullen and wicked. But he got himself intoxicated often. His wife gave him in the same way 6 to 7 globules of Lachesis 1,000, once only.
The 28th January, 1881: His wife told me that her husband got himself intoxicated only 5 times instead of 30 times a month. His character ameliorated more; he is well disposed for his family and for his business. I gave him placebo.
The 9th June: His wife told me that since 28 January her husband did not get himself intoxicated even for a single day since 28th January. I gave him Sulphur 5,000 which cured a cough caused by tubercular fever.
The 20th July: His wife told me that her husband got intoxicated twice because some of the clients of his business offered him wine. As he had the symptoms of tuberculosis of the right lung I gave him some globules of Phosphorus 200 once and prescribed an adipogenous diet which I apply-since nine years with unexpected results.
The 20th October: He was drunk 5 times. His right lung was much better. I gave him Lachesis 2,000 once.
The 20th December: His wife told me that he got himself intoxicated almost every day, 6 to 7 times a week. But his drunkenness changed character. Formely he used to drink in company which was cured by Lachesis. Now he drinks alone and in the cellar, Lachesis was not effective.
It seemed to me that Sulphur was indicated because many years ago, I cured with this remedy a young husband who went in wine- cellars, alone to become intoxicated in secret. Consequently I gave to the old drunkard without his knowledge a few globules of Sulphur 5,000, once. This medicine did not act on the 9th June because he has not the symptom “to be intoxicated in secret” proved immediately effective on the 20th December, because at that time he had the above symptom. Since that time i.e. since one year he did not intoxicate himself a single time although he met people who intoxicated themselves in his presence. He even drunk pure water during his meals as did the members of this family. He admits that he has not more the desire for wine. That dislike was caused by Lachesis and Sulphur.
And nevertheless, since then, in his occupation, in his bearing, he was more strong and active and more alert. This liveliness developed under the influence of Sulphur. I will tell later on about two cases where this same remedy produced this same effect in two other persons.
It seems to me useless to give other cases of drunkard ameliorated or cured by homoeopathic treatment, because this one shows clearly the necessity of repeating the medicated remedy, at different intervals and different dilutions and also the necessity to give other remedies indicated by new paychic symptoms of drunkards, for alternate ameliorations and aggravations are seen in persons having good health. These alternations are seen more in persons who are ill. The doctor should therefor fight against the relapses of the disease, against the relapses of the vicious character. Very often these repeated treatment is indispensable to cure the morbid or vicious indispositions.
Unfortunately after some momentary success one fails because the friends or the relatives of the patient have not always enough patience which helps the doctor to fight the difficult relapses and manifestations of the disease and to cure radically the evil dispositions of character and intellect.
Case VII
A headstrong father, willy, not affectionate, egoist, miser. Cured by Calcarea carbonica 300.
A rich cultivator, had a daughter to marry. A young man of advantageous condition asked her in marriage. Nevertheless the father of the girl and not wish to give her in marriage with the young man, specially he did not wish to give dowry. The wife of the artful, not affectionate, egoist and miserly man came to me for changing the character so as to give consent to the marriage of her daughter and sufficient dowry.
According to my advice, the woman gave him Calcarea carb. 300 prepared and administered in his soup of the evening meal.
Only at the end of 3 weeks, the character of this recalcitrant man began to change. And sometime afterwards he gave consent to the marriage of his daughter with a dowry that was demanded of him.
Case VIII
A child, 4 years old, onanist, disobedient, authoritative, stubborn, violent, dot not yield even to force. Cured by Silicea 300.
The 4th July, 1871: I gave him Silicea 300, 4 to 6 times a day for about a week. At the end of this time I was astonished to know that the little boy has become docile, gay, and obliging and shares his playthings and sweets with his friends.
Case IX
A young girl, timid, self-centered, not affectionate, not expansive, egoist, miser.
Cured by Calc-c. 300 and Silicea 30.
Miss X.. age 19, had the above character. Besides she had not the habit to share with her sister what were given to her. Following my advise, on 7th January, 1875, her mother gave her without her knowledge 6 to 7 globules of Calcarea carbonica 300 once. Fifteen days later, the girls was more expansive and more affectionate. She kissed her mother 4 to 5 times a day which she did not to formerly.
3rd February, 1875: 5 to 7 globules of Silicea 30, given once without her knowledge cured this girls of her egoism and miserliness.
Case X
A young girl very rough while dressing three children and mad them cry. Cured by Nux vomica 200.
Once of my clients had a nurse for three children. The girl gave very good service but she had a very gloomy character, did not speak and disliked strangers and specially she was so much restless and rough while dressing the three children of whom she has the charge, that they cried.
24th February, 1881: My client gave her without her knowledge 6 to 7 globules of Nux vomica 200. After two to three weeks that girl became less gloomy, spoke more, was docile and mild in her movements and less rough. She did not more made to cry while dressing the three children of her master.
Case XI
Distrust in a woman since 10 years. Cured by Causticum 30.
Following a treatment which I gave to her for two years, she became pregnant after 14 years of sterile marriage. During her pregnancy, she felt a great irritability and a great aggravation of unhappy distrust which she had since 10 years following a contrariety. Causticum 30, which she took once a day for 6 days, cured at the end of a week her nervous irritability and besides her distrust which was lasting for 10 years. When the lady took the remedy she knew not that it would cure her of her inveterate distrust.
Case XII
A young girl attacked with tuberculosis of the lung following a chagrin of love Cured by Causticum 30,
Being consulted by a young girl of 25 years having pulmonary tuberculosis about to pass from the first to the secondary sate, I was able to ameliorate notably her health. Being astonished not to have been able to cure completely I asked her mother who came with the girl in my chamber, if any occasional cause has produced her disease and entertaining it. Her mother informed me that her daughter become ill after having failed in a marriage and the girl confirmed these words shedding tears and sobbing before me. Then I prescribed her Staphysagria 30 to be taken once a day for six days. Since then the patient was becoming well incessantly and her disease resulted in complete cure in short time afterwards.
Under the influence of depressing mental causes, the sleep and alimentation, so necessary for the health become notably neglected. Then it is seen that the disease to which one is predisposed, develop, You may very often cure such a disease on condition that it has not become very advanced and disorganised; this was the case of the above girl.
By the help of appropriate remedies suitable to the paychic state of the individual, we may probably check the development of cancers which are manifested following depressing moral caused.
Case XIII
Repulsion and vomiting caused by the cares given to a patient. Cured by Nux Vomica 12.
A very benevolent and devout woman, presented herself to take the care of a patient arrived in the last stage of the disease. This benevolent nursing caused in that kind woman, and well against her desire, such a dislike, that she did not cease to vomit while nursing. I prescribed her Nux vomica 12, to be taken three times a day for 3 to 4 days. There was a momentary aggravation of vomiting which stopped shortly afterwards. And from that time the nurse of so good heart could do her service without repulsion and without vomiting.
Gallavardin set up a homeopathic Dispensary for the cure of alcoholics, often working in conjunction with priests, and he wrote several books on this subject.
