(From the Journal of the American Institute of Homoeopathy).

THE Element is obtained by leaching the ashes of burned seaweed, principally.

It was first proven by Hahnemann and published in 1828 when he recorded 153 symptoms, as observed by himself. In 1829, Hartlaub and Trinks published a list of 516 symptoms mainly taken from the literature of the day.

So you see, from that modest start of 153 symptoms published in 1828, the remedy has been built up to over 700 recorded symptoms in Hahnemanns Chronic Diseases and Herings Guiding Symptoms has twenty-eight pages filled with symptoms of Iodine.

There are 317 heavy barred symptoms, all of which, as you know, indicate a grade of symptoms that was brought out in a large percentage of the provers besides having been verified clinically.

If I were to give you a complete picture of this remedy it would be necessary to enumerate all of these 317 heavy barred symptoms at least, but it is not feasible at this time, so let me try briefly to outline the outstanding characteristics of the remedy so that you may be able to identify the Iodine patient in your daily routine.

Briefly, the Iodine patient is weakly, full of anxiety, always hungry, inclined to grandular hypertrophies, and above all is aggravated by heat.

Emaciation, the skin takes on changes, rough, day, dirty yellow, clammy, scars itch and break open, nodes.

Eats morning, noon, and night as well as piecing between meals, yet there is great loss of flesh even to complete emaciation.

Mentally, Iodine is rich in symptoms all the way from melancholia to absolute mania, despondency with a disposition to weep, fear of impending evil with over-carefulness, restless, must keep moving, quick impulses come to him to kill, it is with difficulty that he refrains from doing bodily harm to his loved ones.

This mania is aggravated by quiet, he must keep walking though exercise exhausts him.

Iodine has a great deal of glandular involvement, glands become enlarged, any gland in the whole body except the mammae they just fade away.

Brights disease, albuminous urine with emaciation and debility, incontinence of urine in the aged,or obstinate retention.

Complete loss of sexual power, prostatic enlargement, hydrocele, offensive sweat on the genitals.

In the female, induration of the uterus and os uteri, acrid leucorrhoeas, metrorrhagias, abortions.

Laryngitis, deep hoarse rough cough from a tickle in the larynx,or deep down under the sternum, shortness of breath, respiration in wave-like expansions, asthma, cough from an unendurable tickling through the whole chest with great weakness and emaciation.

Tumultuous, irregular or intermittent pulse, visible pulsations of abdominal aorta, jugular, and especially so of the temporal artery, palpitation aggravated by the least exertion.

Swelling and induration of the cervical glands, hypertrophy of the thyroid, neck swells up when talking.

Weariness of the arms as though paralysed, especially in bed mornings, coldness of feet and hands, fingers go to sleep, chronic arthritic affections with violent pains at night without swelling.

What is the use of prolonging this paper with additional leading symptoms ? The whole story is contained in the striking personality (or individuality) of this remedy. It must be studied until you se this picture of an extremely nervous, emaciated individual, always in motion, always hungry, and extremely sensitive to heat.
