The Papaw, a small tree growing in the South and South west of the United States, ripens a fleshy fruit, which is edible when ripe. A tincture is prepared from the crushed seeds. the cutaneous disturbance (And fever) were caused by eating the skin of the fruit.

Languid and pale. Discomfort all day. Did not care to converse, even with his best friend. Headache; morning on waking; became general through frontal region after walking in open air and somewhat relieved. Aching in temples; morning on rising, involving eye, with occasional sharp pain over it, which was (<) by a single cough. Throat sore, but not so much so as the hoarseness would indicate. Stomach felt increased in size; soreness on pressure. Colic. Rumbling pain in abdomen in evening, with desire for stool, then a pappy, insufficient stool. Soreness in abdomen, (<) pressure. Pain in l. hypochondrium. Rectum and bowels inactive. Insufficient stool.

Hoarseness; with unusual difficulty in talking, seeming as if mucous membrane were thickened, and organs slow to respond to efforts of speech. Cough slight and dry. Aching pain in upper part of chest, (<) l. side; in upper part of l. lung. Lower end of sternum sore on pressure. Pain in l. shoulder, involving pectoral muscles. Sharp pain in l. hip-joint at 10.30 A.M., 1.30 P.M., and in evening.

Eyes red, burning and smarting, lids swollen, and face covered with pale red eruption, with some swelling of integument and with much smarting and burning, if allowed to run its course watery vesicles from, which coalesce, burst and form large dark crusts, but on this occasion, after Rhus tox. 3d, the eruption did not form crusts and subsided in a few days, when the stomach became tender to touch, as if “sore inside”, for three days, with bloating, then (>) by appearance of dry, papular eruption in patches over body and extremities, with now and then a watery vesicles, and with intense itching and burning, (<) scratching and heat, (>) cold air and cold water, the eruption beginning with a red, itching, point, after scratching and rubbing a blotch like hives, the itching (<) from early evening till after rising in morning, the poisoning has followed this course several times, it began this time on l. cheek.

Waking about daylight, unrefreshed, with headache. Did not rest well at night, turned and moved all night, could not dismiss from my thoughts what had occurred during the day, and got up unrefreshed. Fever, with vomiting of ingests a, scarlet eruption, pulse rapid, full and steady, fauces red and swollen, tonsils and submaxillary glands enlarged, yellowish diarrhoea, frontal headache, soreness of throat and nausea, afterwards desquamation of cuticle and a carbuncle on anterior aspect of thigh, the eruption, fever and diarrhoea being much like some cases of scarlet fever, and the diarrhoea lasting much longer than the other symptoms, all the other children had the eruption on neck and upper limbs.
