      A yellow ethereal liquid (C5H11NO2). It is dissolved in alcohol for internal use.

General Action

      A direct and powerful dilator of arterioles and capillaries, causing flushing of upper part of body, with rapid tumultuous action of heart. Action rapid, evanescent.

Relatives Gloninum, Cactus, Melilotus, etc.

Generalities

      Stiffness as after taking cold. Restlessness. Uncertain trembling sensation over whole body. Tingling in different parts. Numb feeling along the arteries after the weakness had passed off. Weakness; with tendency to perspire on slight exertion. Muscles generally seemed relaxed and heavy, causing sensation of unsteadiness while walking. All symptoms ameliorated by exercise in open air (Gloninum).

Clinical Temporarily relieved epileptiform convulsions. Hysterical symptoms, with flushes, profuse menstruation, etc.

Mind

      Anxiety as if something might happen (Mosch.), must have fresh air. Oblivious of recent conversation. Stupefaction, with flushing of face and scalp, sudden smarting of conjunctivae, injection of ocular conjunctivae, dim vision as through a film, smartings in praecordial region, then r. renal region, then r. axilla, then mid-sternum, then lumbar region, then lower lobe of r. lung, at apex of heart, and in lower lobe of l. lung, with tenderness on pressure, increasing dyspnoea, sneezings, nasal catarrh and sighing, pulse 68, small and feeble, smartings changing position rapidly, being most persistent in eyes, bases of lungs and spine, then gaspings.

Head

      Aching; morning on rising, with nausea; from violent exercise, afterwards heat of room caused the headache to extend from temple to occiput, (<) l. side and remained long in occiput. Heavy aching. Crushing pain upon head, that gathered into a feeling of confusion, threatening to make him unconscious, with throbbing in head, glowing of face, general sweat, (<) palms, and sensation as if scalp were jerked from occiput towards forehead, ceasing just before it reached that point, then dull headache.

Feeling of a band about (Aconite, Gelsemium). Heaviness. Intoxicated feeling. Surging of blood to head and face (Belladonna, Gloninum, Melilot.). Fulness; with flushing of face, increasing to agony (Aconite), with palpitation, which shook the whole body, then sinking to the floor, then unconsciousness, with livid red color of face and eyes, followed by anaesthesia of second phalanges of l. middle and ring fingers.

Confusion; full confused feeling, mostly frontal, then throbbing and bursting sensation. Throbbing; and heat (Belladonna). Throbbing, with bursting-out feeling in ears and constriction of throat and heart. Throbbing and fulness, then a confused weak feeling and a weight in top of head as if it would be crushed in. Vertigo; morning on rising; with heaviness of head; with nausea, also (<) when eyes are closed.

Forehead – Aching. Fronto-orbital pain. Aching over eyes; as if a weight were within. Bursting pain. Heavy pain across in morning. Heaviness over eyebrows. Heaviness in forehead, head would fall to one side, then the other. Heaviness and pressure outward in forehead and temples, with a stupid, drowsy sensation and burning in stomach extending up to throat. Oppression in fronto-parietal suture, then proceeding to frontal bone. Dull feeling. Humming.

Temples – Aching; r. Throbbing (Gloninum, China). Pressure outward while walking, (<) l., with heavy pain in occipital region, extending to nape.

Vertex – Sensation of something rushing upward and throbbing in. Throbbing, and in carotids, with redness and heat in face, head and neck. Humming.

Parietals – Aching in l. Constriction as if pressed in. Dull throbbing in sides and back of head.

Occiput – Boring. Aching; r.; (<) r.; (<) heat of room and writing, (>) when forehead was painful; sub-occipital aching, (<) fatigue and evenings. Throbbing.

Clinical Valuable for violent neuralgic headaches, with great flushing of the face, gasping for breath, tremulousness, dyspnoea, or alternating paleness and coldness of the face, especially of one side. Sometimes useful in the results of sunstroke with the characteristic surging of the blood to the head and face, oppressed respiration, staring eyes, choking in throat.

Eyes

      Glassy and rolling vacantly. Arteries of optic disk small, while veins were dilated, varicose and tortuous. Pain in sunlight with lachrymation, then sneezing, weakness. Sudden sharp pain under l. Smarting of balls in evening with injection of conjunctivae. Pupils dilated. Twitching under l. outer canthus. Conjunctivae bloodshot. Pain back of eye on looking at near objects. Vision dim; blurred when reading; wavering; yellow; primrose halo, even with eyes closed and shaded.

Clinical Exophthalmic goitre, the result of grief, with the characteristic flushings of the drug, enlarged thyroid gland, irregular, tumultuous action of heart, dyspnoea.

Ears

      Throbbing; behind ear. Sensation of a piston working up and down in. Sensation as if membrana tympani would be forced out with each beat of heart.

Nose

      Pressure over root. Numb feeling in bones. Sneezing; after rising; constant desire for. Bleeding from l. nostril.

Face

      Flushed; then turgidity of facial veins; then pale. Grayish white. Sensation as if blood would start through skin, with heat and redness, and with lachrymation. Creeping in l. cheek; r. cheek below malar-bone, then twitching and creeping under l. eye. Vesication of lips, nostrils, etc.

Mouth

      Wide open.

Throat

      Swelling and inflammation of l. tonsil. Collar seemed too tight. Constriction; (>) motion; on each side of trachea, along carotids; extended to chest and caused dyspnoea and asthmatic feeling in larynx and trachea, with desire to eructate. Sensation as from fumes of a match, with desire to cough. Tickling. Dry sensation in throat and mouth at 5 A.M., on waking, with stiffness and dryness of lips.

Stomach

      Appetite lost. Eructations. Nausea. Crampy pain in epigastric region. Burning; with empty eructations. Fulness and pressure, with belching of gas. Discomfort.

Abdomen

      Rumbling. Stool, with rumbling, then empty feeling. Distention, with pain. Griping. Pain, (<) when lying down. Oppression near liver. Griping in umbilical region. Crampy pain in umbilical region. Contraction of muscles of lower A. as if drawn together over region of uterus, with hard feeling on pressure in region of uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

Urine

      Acid, contained a cloud of an oxalate (probably lime), with traces of sugar, specific gravity increased.

Menstrual flow

      Begins at once, but ceases when no longer under influence of drug.

Clinical Effects of suppression of the menses, or after the cessation of menses, flushing headache or general flushes over the face and upper part of the body. Said to be valuable in hour-glass contraction of the uterus and haemorrhages from the uterus. Valuable for after-pains which are associated with flushing of the face.

Respiratory Organs

      Cough; inclination to, with indescribable feeling of fulness about chest; hacking. Respiration accelerated. Peculiar sensation of choking. Suffocated feeling from palpitation. Dyspnoea with inclination to cough. Respiration difficult and rapid, with feeling of weight on sternum. Respiration spasmodic and irregular, a few breaths very rapid, then slow and long-drawn, finally they became barely perceptible. Sighing; desire to sigh convulsively. Easier and deeper, apparently from dilatation of bronchi.

Clinical Cough, spasmodic, suffocative, with great oppression of chest. Dyspnoea of Bright’s disease.

Chest

      Aching in r. Drawing pain in l., between seventh and ninth ribs. Peculiar sensation in r. lung or chest, not exactly a pain. Oppression on walking; especially at lower part of sternum; at end of sternum on descending stairs. Contraction at left of heart. Warmth in.

Heart

      Praecordial anxiety (Aconite, Cact.). Stitching and constriction in cardiac region. Pain in region of heart, (>) eructations; pain in region of, extending round to back; pain and constriction around (Cact.). Constriction and pressure, over praecordial region as if he wanted to rub it. Cardiac oppression and tumultuous heart action. Marked beating of heart and carotids. Palpitation; after exercise, action accelerated. Blood pressure diminished. Pulse rapid; and small, then full; and irregular; irregular and jerking, then so slow and feeble that it could not be detected at the wrist; slow and strong, then quicker and jerking; pulse distinctly felt in fingers (Gloninum).

Clinical Heart. Cardiac oppression, tumultuous action of the heart, violent pulsation in carotids. A valuable palliative in hypertrophy of the heart, with insufficiency of the aortic valves.

Neck

      Stiffness and pain, neuralgic or rheumatic, in r. side, and in r. shoulder, extending to wrist. Aching in morning, moving to suboccipital region.

Back

      Twinges near dorsal vertebrae. Aching across loins; on waking and lying down at night; (<) fatigue and evening. Aching in r. renal region. Pain and weariness in lower lumbar region in morning.
