General [General] Or Hovering of the Lights as it is generally called, is caused by sudden changes of the atmosphere, from the animal being kept too closely confined in badly ventilated buildings; it is also produced by the vapours arising from a large quantity of filth being allowed to accumulate near the animal.
The symptoms are short panting breathing, heaving of the flanks, short cough, loss of appetite; generally there is great thirst, the animal seldom lies down, but frequently goes down upon the knees, and rests the breast upon the ground.
REMEDIES: Aconite, Phosphorus and Bryonia.
Aconite [Acon] Aconite must be given first, followed by Phosphorus; sometimes these two medicines are sufficient to effect a cure. Dose. Three drops every two or three hours according to the violence of the case.
Bryonia [Bry] Bryonia may be given if there is a short dry cough, and the animal remains standing in one position for a long time, stiffness of the fore legs.
Dose. Three drops three times a day.
Sulphur [Sulph] A dose or two of Sulphur may be given with benefit when recovery is taking place.
