DISEASES OF THE DOG General [General]       Dogs are very subject to attacks of ophthalmia especially those that are fed with rich food. It is at times the result of exposure of cold, or from particles of dust getting under the eyelids. The symptoms are swelling and closing of the eyelids, abundant secretion of tears; if the lids are separated, the middle part of the eye will be found of a dull leaden colour, and conjunctiva, or white part of the eye, very much inflamed.

REMEDIES: Aconite, Belladonna, Euphrasia, Arnica and Sulphur. Aconite [Acon]       Aconite must be given first, and continued till the inflammation is subsided.

Dose. Two drops every three or four hours. Euphrasia [Euphr]       Euphrasia may be given if after giving Aconite the lids continue closed, and tears continue to run down the cheeks.

Dose. Four drops night and morning. Belladonna [Bell]       Belladonna may be given if the eye remains dull, or if the inflammatory symptoms do not give way from the use of Aconite.

Dose. Three drops three times a day. Arnica [Arn]       Arnica is indicated when the disease is the result of injury, at the same time use the Arnica lotion externally.

Dose. Three drops every four hours, and bathe the eye twice a day with the lotion of 20 drops of Arnica to half a pint of water. Sulphur [Sulph]       If from the use of these remedies the eye is not perfectly restored to its healthy state, give two or three doses of Sulphur.
