General [General] This is generally noticed by the dog carrying its head on one side, shaking the head, or pawing the ear with the feet; if the ear is examined, the inside will be found red and somewhat thickened; if the disease is allowed to proceed, the enlargement increases, which suppurates, and a bloody or black looking discharge escapes, which corrodes, ears into the ultimately destroys the cartilage of the ear.
REMEDIES: Arsenicum, Hepar sulphur, Mercurius vivus and Carbo vegetabilis. Hepar sulph [Hep] Hepar sulphur should be given as soon as the affection is discovered, which will often prevent the formation of an abscess; but if this should take place, Arsenicum and Mercurius will be found most useful; the ear must be kept clean by frequent washing with tepid water.
Dose. Three drops night and morning. Arsenicum [Ars] The following dressing may be applied twice a day 4 grains of Arsenicum, 3rd trituration, to an ounce of water. Carbo veg [Carb-v] Carbo vegetabilis is more suitable for dogs that have been used to violent exercise, and also for dogs that are getting old.
Dose. The same as above recommended for Hepar sulphur.
