Introduction

Tartaric acid, C4H6O6. Preparation: Solutions in water, freshly prepared.

Head

Dizziness (in one hour).

Face

His face instantly becomes as red as fire, and having exclaimed that he was poisoned, he became speechless; he never after left his bed, where he died on the tenth day. The lips turn brown and blackish at their inner edge. Constant dryness of the lips; he is obliged to moisten them. (Burning at the upper lip, on a spot where a pimple had been cured). Burning of the lips (in a quarter of an hour).

Mouth

The teeth are set on edge. Brown and dry tongue. Pasty taste in the mouth, in the morning, which ceases after eating.

Throat

Burning sensation in throat and stomach as if on fire.

Complained of a burning sensation in his throat and stomach, as though he had drank oil of vitriol, and stated that he could compare it to nothing but being all on fire.

Stomach

Very urgent thirst. Eructations. Nausea (immediately).

Vomiting continued till death. Repeated and almost continual vomiting. The matters vomited were of a deep-green color.

Abdomen

Pain in the umbilical region. Pinching below the navel, with emission of flatulence; cold feeling in the abdomen for a quarter of an hour (in ten minutes). Pinching in the abdomen.

Stool

Many stools during the night. The faeces were of the color of coffee-grounds.

Respiratory organs

Hoarseness and scraping in the larynx. Respiration accelerated, then laborious and slow. Respiration difficult and slow.

Heart and Pulse

Very weak action of the heart. Feeble pulse.

Back.

Sharp pain in the region of the loins.

Inferior Extremities.

Paralysis of the thighs and legs. Tearing pains in the soles of the feet, near the heel, which prevents him from setting his foot on the ground, after luncheon.

Generalities

Convulsions just before death. Excessive weakness. In the evening he feels very tired, and can scarcely drag himself along.

General bruised sensation, especially of the lower limbs.

Amelioration in the open air.

Sleep

Yawning and stretching. Frequent yawning.

Fever

General cold feeling, in the evening in bed.

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
In 1881 Allen published A Critical Revision of the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica.
