Introduction

Mind

Emotional. Excitement, together with unusual heaviness, indolence, and ill-humor. Excitement in the afternoon; more sleep than usual, in the evening. Delirium (before death). Troublesome and unreasonable mental impressions, easily developed into fixed ideas, Illusions of sensation of Remarkably lively and talkative, no one else in able to get in a word. Sat all day with her head leaning on her hand, and hardly answering when spoken to. Disposition mild, scrupulous, and timid, with blunted sensibilities. Sadness, (10). Low spirits, Entire dejection of spirits, able to read a little, to write very little, with much effort, but taking no interest in anything in life, and though accustomed to the labor of authorship, was quite unable to fix her thoughts on any subjects, for many days. Mind feels tired, and does no care to work. Sluggishness of mind; he is inclined to mechanical labor. Aversion to work, Fixed immovable thoughts (twenty first day). It constantly seems as though he ought to think about something, but he does no know what; he falls in with nothing. It is difficult to collect his senses, and he is irresolute. Head

Confusion and Vertigo. Confusion of the head, making thought difficult. Confusion of the head, with great aversion to earnest work. Confusion of the head, which seems to come from the back through the nape of the neck into the head, Confusion of the head becoming a pressing pain, especially in the temples; this headache recurred from time to time, till late in the evening (first day). Slight confusion of the head, with some pressure in the right half of the forehead (after four drops). Vertigo. Vertigo, tending forward. Vertigo with weakness, in the morning. Dizziness. General Head. Congestion of the head, Followed by headache for half an hour. Before menstruation, flushing heat in the head, with palpitation and tension in the throat, which became thick. Heaviness in the head, (after three hours). Headache. Headache in the morning, on rising relieved by eating; an hour afterwards, headache returns, and lasted till noon, Headache, beginning at night, and continuing all next day; pain mostly in right side of occiput; occasional pains over left eye, with a tried, sick feel ing, Headache in the warm air, when driving a long time or walking rapidly. Very distressing headache in forenoon; the pains commenced on right side of occiput, and extended over the head to left eye. Dull headache in the forenoon (60) Headache as if a band were tightly bound about the head. Pressive, and at times, sticking headache. Violent pressive headache, especially in the right temples. Throbbing in the head, on every motion (after twenty four hours). Slight throbbing headache, lasting two hours, with hot head and cold, clammy hands; afterwards, a bruised feel ing of brain in vertex, relieved by cold air, beating, throbbing headache at 3 p. m. lasting till bedtime; head very hot; face red. Beating throbbing pain in head, with much heat, and a stupid, cross feeling; washing in cold water relieved. Forehead. Pain in the whole frontal region (after five drops). Pain in the frontal regions with confusion of the head, and a half an hour after the headache had passed away violent hunger set in, which also recurred soon after dinner (after six drops). Frontal headache, Headache in the forehead, externally, as from suppuration. Head ache in the forehead and top of the head, aggravated by every noise or by talking. Suborbital headache. Pressure in a small spot in the forehead, just above the root of the nose. Pressive headache above the eyes, towards evening. Pressive headache, especially in the left side of the head, extending towards fore head, frequently returning. Sharp pressive pain in the upper head of the left side of the head., Tearing headache above the left eye, and in the temple. Headache in the forehead, the brain feels bruised and extremely sensitive; the whole body especially the arms, feels powerless and paralyzed; he is obliged to lie down; with eructations and painful sensitiveness of the external head to touch;even on the next day, confusion of the head and painfulness of the brain on motion (after twenty six days). Throbbing in the forehead, without pain. Temples. Tearing first in the left, than in the right temporal region, almost at the same time. Vertex. Pain on the left side of the vertex. Slight pressure in the vertex, lasting ten minutes (after a quarter of an hour, third day). Stitches in the top of the head (third day). Parietals. Pains in the morning, at 8 am. extending over the right side of the head from the occiput, leaving a bruised spot on vertex. Severe left sided headache, in the evening. Drawing pin in the left side of the head, extending into the teeth. Drawing pressure in the upper part of the left side of the head, extending into the temple. Pressive tearing in the right side, above the forehead. Occiput. Biting, sore pain in the right side of the occiput, above the ear, extending backward in the skin. Pain in right occipital region, with occasional dull, aching pain in forehead. Transient pain in the occiput. Pressive pain in the occiput, relieved by rest, aggravated b walking or other motion of the body and after while changing to great confusion of the head, which lasted till 7 p. m. Violent pressive pain in the under surface of the occiput. Stitches in the occiput, relieved by lying down. External head. The hair falls out. Great falling of the hair. Itching of scalp, toes, etc. Severe itching of scalp on vertex, lasting of scalp, toes, etc. Severe itching of scalp on vertex lasting several days; worse in morning.

Eyes

Objective. Redness of eyes (second day). Eyes glistening, injected, Protruding (after two hours). Eyes sparkling and restless. Eyes dull and fixed. with large black rings around them. Dim, Dull-looking eyes. Inflamed eyes. Inflammation of th eyes, caused by taking cold. Ophthalmia, Whites of the eyes dirty yellow with injected vessels. Large black rings around eyes, Peculiar brownish discoloration under the eyes. Eye sunken and wild-looking Eyes sometimes fixed, sometimes wandering. Jerking in the eyes (after a few hours) Subjective. Weak feeling about the eyes as if they lay deep in the orbits, especially in the afternoon. Tension above the right eye, with somewhat inflamed eyes. Pressure in the eyes. Pressure in the eyes. as if sand were in them. Painful pressure in the left eye and inner canthus, cutting stitches in the left eye, extending towards the external canthus. Tearing pain about the right eye. Especially beneath it. Constant tearing pain around the right eye, passing backward from the inner canthus to the articulation of the jaw (sixth to seven day). Lids. Redness and swelling of the eyelids, with nightly agglutination. Enormous swelling and violet color of the upper eyelid. Leucophlegmatic swelling of both eyelids, without marked redness of the eyeball. Constant twitching of the lower lid back and forth. Right eyelid itching being spasmodically looped up into festoons spasms did not entirely cease until after eighteen days. Itching of the eyelids Itching in the canthi. Lachrymal Apparatus. Lachrymation (after one hour). Profuse lachrymation. Profuse watering of the eyes, when in the open air. Ball. Stitches in the upper part of the left side of eyeball. Pupils. Pupils moderately dilated (after two hours). Pupils extremely dilated. Vision. Obscuration of vision. Dimness of sight. Dimness and weakness of vision. Eyesight weak for several days, and is still less strong than usual, after eighteen days. Objects seem as though veiled. The light seems weak and indistinct. He saw nothing but the white paper while reading print; after he had got to the end of phrase, the commencement of it would become visible. Greatly increased sensibility of the retina, a kind of photophobia, so that during the day objects seems illumined by a flaming fiery- red and almost blinding light, and the artificial light of the evening was quite intolerable, Disturbance of vision, At times, objects seem manifold, and she is unable to see distinctly. She us unable to do fine sewing, because the stitches flicker. Flickering before the eyes, sparks before the eyes. Fiery curved rays shoot sideways from the visual axis, frequently downwards, and also around about the eyes, a short distance from the point of vision, though more upward (after twenty-four hours). Dark rings float down before the eyes, At the sides and near the visual axis (after sixteen hours). Eyes suffused.

Dr. Allen compiled the Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica over the course of 10 years.
